    - Crawl does just that! Note this all applies to Portal search only, SPS not WSS. I'm looking for ways to optimize the crawl of documents in a web content source. I've set the resource usage to dedicated already. For example, I only require search on metadata. I don't require full text indexing but I can't see a way to stop this on the portal.     - Opening documents In the last 6 days we have a problem that appears to be random amongst users. Certain people within the UK, States and Germany when trying to open up documents, i.e. Word, Excel, PDF etc on a site they simply hang and never open. Users get a copying icon that appears where bits of paper float from one folder to the other but this just goes on and on.     - SPin.exe error I am getting the following and have no clue where to look to fix it, any ideas? I've already increased maximum document size as i had that error previously. Then when i tried to spin i had an error saying some documents already existed. so for example if i run spin again now i will get that error! So i have to delete the portal (and associated databases), then create again and increase document size. I can't see what i need to do to fix this one. ANy help? How do i know which point in the xml file to look at? I've opened the spout result xml file in internet explorer (IE) and it opens ok? How else can i validate the XML? I have a "Contacts" topic with Contact lists in it setup on the corporate portal and a search scope also on the corporate portal which searches this topic.     - How to Prevent Automated Wholesale Downloading of Portal? Hello everybody, We all know that our sharepoint portal is doing a fantastic job helping us manage our data. It is somesort of a digital brain or asset for a company who uses it to archive years of business information. Are there any security measures in place to prevent an exploitive user (who has rights to access the portal, like an employee who is leaving service) to use a 3rd party software that is freely available in the market to download the whole portal (pages, pictures, databases and all)? Usually what such a program does is to crawl the entire site and download every single file from the root url specified. Currently this wholesale downloader I am testing with can pop up log in windows when it meets them, skip protected files, auto fill in html forms with parameters specified by you, access the page as an IE browser, among other things. A few days ago, I have asked in this discussion group whether it's possible to control the bandwidth from sharepoint, and the answer I got was that it is impossible to do that in sharepoint and it was suggested that I check whether the firewall or router can do the trick. Our intranet firewall is quite burdened to help with the tracking of bandwidth. Moreoever, the main objective is also to block the user from automatically downloading and not denying access after he has copied a substantial amount of data out. It will be very much appreciated if anybody can contribute some ideas on how to protect digital assets from malicious automated wholesale downloading softwares. If anyone has implemented these protective measures, I would very much like to know how you do it in detail. This is going to decide the fate of our portal because people won't share information if they are not assured that their contributions are in safe hands. Both server are in the same domain and I used a domain user to install SharePoint with local administrator on SharePoint box and a valid user on SQL Server box.     - Security on Sharepoint Server, people accessing from the outside This is the situation: I need to allow people to access contents of my SharePoint Portal Server 2003 server. Currently Sharepoint is setup in just one server, such server would be accessed by both internal and external users. I have ISA 2004 in place that would allow me to publish Sharepoint Server content I need. Due to political forces, I was told not to put any front-end server in the "internal" network (even when published by a properly configured ISA 2004 server in the DMZ), and therefore I would need to find a way to put a "front-end" server in the "DMZ" and keep the Sharepoint back-end server in the Internal network. Correct me if I am wrong, but similarly to Exchange 2003 OWA front-end servers, the Sharepoint front-end servers require various communication ports open to access AD. For that reason, instead of making this type of "Front-end" server (be that Exchange 2003 front-end or Sharepoint) in the "DMZ" and make serveral holes in the ISA firewall to allow the communication between Front-end-DMZ and Back-end-Internal servers, I thought it was a better setup a separate forest/domain and put the Sharepoint servers there in the DMZ.     - incompatible Web parts Hi I've downloaded a coupla web parts from the web - one is a google search WP, the other is a Site Map WP. The problem is that the Site Map control only shows up when the Trust level is set to Full, but this causes the google Search to not show up. The Google Search WP shows up only when the setting is WSS_Minimal. I've tried setting the level to WSS_Medium but then neither control shows up. Is there any way around this?     - password carryover I am assisting in a project to install a Sharepoint Portal, so i do not have a lot of experience with this tool yet. However, right now my team and the people who are doing the install are on different domains. Anytime i try and open a document, i have to input my password. When we have the portal up and running, most of our users are going to be consultants out in the field. If they have to input their passwords every time they click a link then the consultants are going to rebel! So my question is: what do i need to do to make it so that, once you have logged in, you can click around wihtout having to re-login time and again. The company that is building this for us claims there is nothing we can do. But, come on: i can wander all over Amazon.com and not have to re-enter my password. We have applied many (but not all) SPS and OS hotfixes but still haven't seen this working. MemberOf continue to be truncted. Aug 3, 3:55 pm... We wanted to port the groups a user belongs to into SharePoint. The memberOf field in AD maps via the profile database. Unfortunately, memberOf is a multi-valued field and SharePoint is only bringing in the last group. I made the field string and 2600 in length but all of the data after the 1st group is truncated. Hi All, I have sql2000 database for storing sharepoint details and I have to find out the document details inside sharepoint database. I am able to find out the site url for a perticular document but I dont know whether its doable to search exact location of a document inside a filesystem. e.g.: If I stores sampe.doc in shared document list inside any site then is it possible to find out the exact location of a document where it is goin to be stored? On the news site of a portal it is possible, but optional, to set an
expiration date. This creates a great deal of work for out secretary
since she has to put expiration date on all listing where the author
forgets to set one.

Is it possible to require authors to set an expiration date on a news
listing?
