    - Setting up server for HTTPS vs HTTP://servername I am new to Sharepoint and got thrown into it quite blinded. I have been searching high and low for info on it. I just set up my server( single server with sql2000 on the same server) I believe my boss wants secure authentication from outside our firewall( similar to owa) if I am my understanding of the web is correct and that is what HTTPS is. I was reading in some of the posts that you can set up authentication throught the firewall through IIS manager and setting the ports on the firewall. My question is does changing the authentication method change the portal site to a secure site? Or am I missing it all together? Is it possible to set it up similar to OWA so I can log into the portal page from outside the firewall using my NT domain account? This maybe 3 questions or just all the same question. If so Im sorry Ive only been doing this for a short time and my experience is limited when it comes to server and web...Thanks for any help in advance.... Shane J......     - DNS problem? Or SPPS2003 problem? Help! OK...I'm kinda a newbie to this whole Sharepoint thang, but I'm learnin fast.. OK here goes.. We are using SPPS2003. We set up a standard portal. Our clients are a development team who are posting documents to the portal and the users are just searching and reading. The name of the server is http://xyzz00021. The development team wanted the server running as "anonymous" because users could be anywhere in the world on our intranet/extranet and they didn't want the security headaches. So far so good... What we have discovered is that users in Hong Kong and Australia cannot open documents they find using the SPPS search tool. When they search for "shutdown" they come up with a document: http://xyzz000021/docs/shutdown.doc If they click on this, they get a "can't find file" error. But if they copy the address and modify the URL with the fully qualified domain name (FQDN), the file loads as it should; http://xyzz000021.here.canada.net/docs/shutdown.doc Why is this? We have also noticed that if you have DNS alias names, you can use them go to a portal. We have an alias called http://deltadocs which is the same as the above portal http://xyzz00021. If you jump into your document folders, all the names of the documents assume the alias DNS and everything works OK. But if you search for a document, the location of the file reverts back to http://xyzz00021/docs/whatever.doc Where does the SPPS search tool generate its DNS address for a document location?     - Portal Search Error I have a single server SPS2003 deployment and using Sql Server 2000 on the same box. When I click the "Configure Search and Indexing" link (/_layouts/1033/SearchSettings.aspx) the page throws error "The gatherer index was not initialized. The content index must be remounted. If the index is still not initialized, remove it." I tried reconfiguring the Default Content Access account and the Config DB ccount but still no luck. Has any one faced similar problem?     - SharePoint architectural and design consulting Hi guys, I'm looking for someone to have a chat with. I'm building a contract management system which uses various templates for the various bits of a contract (swinging toward WordXML as we're getting the users up to speed on Word 2003 and it's features). We're having some decisions on implemenation of the templates. I didn't get deep into the details when I did the conceptual work, but it was architecturally sound (document, templates, meta-data, sharepoint, it all fit). On implementing the various templates and how things fit together some problems arise that I would like to have a 1-2 hour chat with someone. I'll pay for consulting time of course but looking for someone with a good understanding of both SPS and WSS and details around document libraries and templates. Word 2003 and XML would be nice on how the meta-data fits in with SharePoint. No, InfoPath is not an option at this point. Let me know if anyone is game as I would like to get together tommorow.     - SharePoint Services We are using the sharepoint services in SBS2003. We have upgraded the MSDE sharepoint to SQLSharepoint. We are putting pictures into the pictured folders on the companweb website, and it worked at first, but now none of the previews or thumbnails are showing up. I've been very interested in taking their SharePoint Development Bootcamp for a long time, but their website has said the class will be "on sale soon" for literally eight months now. This is very frustrating, to say the least. The president of the company has responded to my emails a few times, citing low interest for the class. However, there are quite a few other companies out there offering similar classes on a regular basis, so that makes me wonder. SharePoint Experts' class seemed like the best though, and held in the best location (Orlando). I'm now starting to look at classes from SharePoint Solutions and Mindsharp. Does anyone have any recommendations on these? Or is it worth waiting for the SharePoint Experts class, whenever that will be? We have set up a collaboration site for the purpose of collaborating on the development of specifications, meetings, conference calls, etc. So far this seems like it will work out very nicely. The developers among us would like to have our own restricted 'developers' corner'. We've set up a subsite and restricted membership to our developers' active directory group. This works out nicely as well. I'd like to place a link to the devleopers' corner on the home page of the top level collaboration site.     - Events listview Hi, I am trying to take the time out of the initial (home page) view of the Events list. I don't seem to be able to alter the date format although the help file implies that I should be able to. I have tried 2 main methods of doing this - 1 - editing the list in Frontpage - this seems to work for all other parts of the webpart (All events, current events and so on) but if I try it with the initial view in the home page I get a warning that recurrent events will no longer be recurrent and in fact no new events are displayed in the initial display list. 2 - Ihave tried creating my own new lists. I haven't found anywhere where I can change the formating option from date and time to date only (although the help note implies that this is possible). Is anyone able to tell me if I've missed something or whether I have to do something more complex like create a new inherited web part or modify the VWSTYLES.XML file ? Thanks, Ben.     - Home Area Security Issues Hi, How do I manage security in the home area of my SPS portal ? On all sub-areas etc. I can use the "Manage Security" link in the actions menu, however this menu item doesn't exist on the home page. My problem revolves around the issues as follows. Say I want to setup multiple site groups groupA, groupB, and groupC all of which have rights to add links to lists, upload documents etc. I can assign groupA to sub-areaA using Manage Security link in sub-areaA and restrict the other 2 groups (B and C) from adding links etc. using this method. I can do the same for groupB in sub-areaB and groupC in sub-areaC etc. However ALL THREE groups have permissions to add links, upload docs etc to the home area - I can't find a way to restrict them since there is no "Manage Security" link in the actions menu.     - Name change woes... Alright, here is my latest looloo... I have a user who got married, change her name, the whole 9 yards. The name was changed in AD however not exactly in Sharepoint. Keep in mind while reading this I am a Sharepoint newbie (I inherited the position of Admin). Regardless of that, let me try and illustrate what is happening: Say user jsmith gets married, and changes her name to jdoe. The My Site is displayed as 'Doe, Jane', but it is still located at http://xxx.xxxx.com/personal/jsmith. Now... When doing a search, the users documents are showing up as being authored by 'Smith, Jon'. Minor issue to me, not so minor to the user. The user 'Smith,Jon''s actual username is jsmith2. Looking at the AD account, there are still several references to jsmith as well as jdoe (SIP goes to jsmith, but email is jdoe@xxx.xxxx.com, but with an alias to jsmith@xxx.xxxx.com). So... Long story short, the user would like credit where credit is due and wants it changed. I am however, at a total loss here. Sooo.... Clear as mud? I'm sure I have managed to confuse several people, hopfully, at least so I am not the only one confused. Any help, suggestions, fixes, would be greatly appreciated.     - Username change & My Site Problems Here's my latest looloo... I have a user who got married, name changed, the whole bit. Long story short, when her name changed, her site did not. That in itself, isn't specifically the problem. Where the problem comes in is when she does a search for documents she has posted, it is showing the documents, however with a username that isn't her previous name, or her current. To illustrate what seems to be happening, here's the situation hypothetically... Say user jsmith, get's married, and changed her name to jdoe. There is another user who is jsmith2 (one is Jon the other is Jane). After the name change, it is chaged in AD, her My Site still is located in the http://XXX.XXX.com/personal/jsmith but shows her name listed on the site and everywhere else as jdoe, BUT all of her documents are listed with the author 'Doe, Jon' however his username is jdoe2. Similar names, but different... Clear as mud I know, and yes it makes as much sense to me as I'm sure it doesn't to everyone else... My Sharepoint works in an IFrame of a different site. I don't want to change all the admin pages to fit the design of the "mothers page".     - This form is not available for this list, discussion board, survey Hi, I had just finished doing some work on my SPS 2003 portal yesterday, and when I went to a document library under one of the Areas, I got the message in the subject. I found a KB 831021 which describes this, however I wasn't completely happy with the solution, nor was what it was saying correct. It said that The issue may occur if the Upload.aspx file is deleted from the document library. I used ghosthunter to track down this file location as it is ghosted and it was there, nothing wrong with it at all. The solution was to delete and recreate the document library... I did this, and the problem still existed. I then started looking at views, and realized, that there were no views. So I created a view equivalent to "All Documents" This is now working ok, but, I don't have an explorer view now and I cant figure out how to create an explorer view. All in all, this seems very odd and I'd like to get to the bottom of what is really happening... I'm just setting this server up at the moment, so no big deal when something like this happens, but when it goes into production, I'll have 100 simultaneous phone calls if this happens... very awkward, so I'd like to figure out what is actually wrong - how did all my views, for just one document library, suddenly disappear, all other document libraries were normal - and how to prevent it ... has anyone else run into this before? I know how to do this by hand, convert the data into list form and publish or merge to a sharepoint list. But what I need to do is do all this programatically.     - Search Index and Deleted Document Workspaces I'm running Sharepoint 2003 SP1 on Windows 2003 Ent. I openned Word 2003 and created a document and then via Word I created a document workspace on my Sharepoint instance. I click on the link to the doc workspace and it appears to have worked fine. If a do a search from the Sharepoint root site it finds the document workspace and docs within. If I then delete the workspace by selecting Site Settings within the doc workspace it deletes the site, but when I go back to the sharepoint search it still returns the doc workspace site - even though the links to it don't work.     - Applying new stylesheet Hello, I've attempted to apply a new style sheet to my portal by adding the new css file into my _layouts folder then entering the address against the Custom Cascading style sheet under the portal Site Settings page. For some reason, this doesn't appear to be taking. I've done an iisreset, but still not results. When I rename the original sps.css file, the layout then becomes disorganized, so it seems the portal is still referencing the sps.css file, even though I've pointed it to the new css file.
