Why does a simple reader see all the links to site settings etc? A reader can't change the website, but he/she sees all the links? A little bit strange imho.

Make sure they are not in a local NT group that has admin permissions on the
box...

Sharepoint doesn't always hide what a user can't do. I'm hoping MS will fix
this down the road, but for now it's an education issue.
