    - Slow opening SQL Server when Portal loaded? I have a low volume SQL Server 2K db on one of our servers, and associated .asp pages on our external webserver where I update it. Everything had been fine until earlier this summer when SharepointPortalServer 2003 was loaded on the server with SQL Server on it. My db andn programs are unrelated to SPS. My users have started complaining that they create/update a record on my db, and it doesn't "take". Investigation and testing have shown that the .asp where the record is inserted/updated is now timing out before the record is created/updated. The way it appears to be working now is that the first time in the day an update type query goes against the db, it has to actually OPEN it now, which I didn't think was the way it works, but it sure acts like it. A simple select query works fine, btw. I tried running the exact same update query in the SQL Query Analyzer, and noted that it took nearly an entire minute to update a single field on a single record, but it did work. However, if I IMMEDATELY ran the exact same query again it worked fine from that point on, in milliseconds, as it should have, until the next day. The .asp pages started working again, too. The next day, tho, it started all over again. If I go into SQA the next day and update a record again, it takes a long time again, but again, that seems to "open" the files for the day. This is NEW behavior, it never happened before. I have tried putting the query into a stored procedure, but that did not help, and verified that the db has autoclose=0, and query time-out is 0 as well (which I understand means unlimited). The only NEW thing is that SPS was installed on the server, and of course it is SQL based, so it shows up in the Enterprise Manager for that server. My question to the group is whether anyone else has noticed something like this happening, or can suggest a solution.     - Modifying HTML I'd like to cosmetically change the look and feel of SPS/WSS using my own HTML editor (not FrontPage). I know to BE very careful not to modify the actual functionality of the framework; however, I just want to spice up the boring default templates by design - can anyone please point me in the right direction?     - Crawling Errors Anyone know why I would get error messages stating the URL could not be resolved when the indexing service runs?     - Sharepoint document upload hanging Hi, I've given the newgroups a good read-through to see if my problem has been encountered before, but unfortunately I've come up with nothing so figured it was time to post! One of my colleagues is having problems uploading a document to the portal via the Sharepoint client. When she drags a document to the portal document folder, it'll start the copy process, but then just sit there showing the progress bar - which is filled up immediately. The weird part of it all though is if it's done through the front-end (IE) it seems to work fine. I suspect it's the sharepoint client causing the problem, but I'm not sure how to go about proving/resolving the issue. Anyone any ideas? Cheers!     - SPSBackup failing when run as a scheduled batch job. Hi all I am trying to get spsbackup to run as a scheduled task via a batch file. The batch file works fine if I am logged onto the server and run it from the command prompt. However, it keeps failing as a scheduled task with the following error message in the event log: 'The configuration database could not be found from this server. In order to backup any components, you must first join this server to a farm.' The SQL databases are on a seperate server than our SharePoint installation. I thought that this may be due to the fact that the scheduled task did not have security access to the databases. I therefore added a service account specifically created for SharePoint to the security tab of the scheduled task. However, the same error message appeared. I noticed that there are xml (?) tags (?) around the actual data, and that the data types assigned are not the best.     - document workspace members who are groups I just switched most of our site settings from user based to AD group based. I now realize that on document sites and workspaces the members are only groups, thereby disabling collaboration. Do I need to go back to per user access, or is there a way to do this with groups?     - How do I move a sub-sub-site to a different sub-site? How do I move a sub-sub-site to a different sub-site along with all the associated docs and links and other sub-sub-sub-sites? I want a client site, under that is a subsite, Active, and another subsite, Inactive. Each of these sub-sites have sites for the clients and the Projects associated with the client. When a client become Inactive I want to move that client's sub-site, and all sub-stuff under it, to the Inactive client site as a sub-site there.     - SPS 2003 using SQL server configured to enable 'lightweight pooling' option Our organisation uses the "lightweight pooling" option on it's SQL servers. The default for this on SQL 2000 is 0, we have it set to 1 and the SQL configuration is out of my control. What I have found is that XML stored procedures are not fully supported in this config. When I attempt to perform an administrative task in a portals Site Settings that executes an xml stored procedure (such as updating the fields in a Sharepoint user's profile), the action fails and a SQL trace shows error 6604 which is "XML stored procedures are not supported in fibers mode" (fibers meaning that lightweight pooling is enabled). Has anyone else come across this? Assuming that I am unable to persuade the SQL admins to change the setting, does anyne have a workaround?     - User Permissions ignored in PS Search I was testing the SharePoint 2003 PS search's ability to filter out search results based on a user's read access on network shared files. So i setup two folders, one called "publicFolder" which is publicly viewable to all users in the domain and another "NonPublicFolder" which is only viewable to the SharePoint process owner. Then i ran the crawler on each folder and SharePoint successfuly indexed all the files in each folder, as expected. However, when i did a search, the search results returned all the files in both the PublicFolder and NonPublicFolder! Offcourse, I cannot open the files linked to the NonPublicFolder, but our company policy is not to even show results that the user cannot open, and i thought this was a out-of-box feature of SharePoint Portal Server.     - Copy Error - IE6 Win2K conflict Sharepoint 2001 - Users are getting copy error when coping files to a Sharepoint folder. "You do not have permission to copy this file, or folder, or there are network problems preventing authenticstion from the server." Permissions have not changed but the WIN2K SP4 has been applied. It appears to have a problem with IE6 and WIN2K SP4. Test with IE5.5 and WIN2K SP4 works fine and IE6 with WIN2K SP2 work fine without errors. There also is a Tahoe error when tring to Edit Profile on a document that seems related. After a server reboot the clients with IE6/WIN2K SP4 receive this error until a Edit Profile is performed by a IE5.5/WIN2K SP2. Has anyone else experienced this problem. Thanks! I have the current config: Seperate SQL 2000 DB server Single SPS server with 4 portals: Single portal configured to provide shared services Dedicated child portal hosting personal sites 2 production child portals for different divisions Everything is working well except for 2 "minor" issues: Issue 1 ======== Profile import from AD is working fine, but I cannot MANUALLY create user profiles.     - CAS I'm having a difficult time wrapping my head around Code Access Security. We have just installed Sharepoint Portal Server 2003. I have a web part that uses the obc.net dataprovider that is causing me a security error when I try to upload the web part.     - Can you hide the 'Add new ...' link if user has no permission to A Taking 'Events' as an example. I have setup a site group who only have permissions to 'View items' in the Events list. This works fine and users in this group are not allowed to add Events. However, the restricted users do see the 'Add new event' link. They can also select the link and go through the motions of adding an event. When the user clicks 'Save and Close', they are prompted to enter a username and password. Entering their own username and password does not work. When you click 'Cancel' you are then informed that you do not have permission to perform this action.     - Edit and save TIFs and PDFs Hello I am trying to open tif oder pdf document from a DL and save (not "save as") it to the DL. This doesn't seem to work in all applications except standard office apps (Word 2003, Excel 2003 etc). It even doesnt work in Office Document Imaging. I find some posting about editing docicon.xml and adding an appropriate OpenControl. Our main interest in using the Share point server is for document repository and retrieval. The main attribute of this service is the search capability. In testing searches on files in a site that has been index, many of the search words used did not get any results, I did get some results but it was disappointing on how random this was.     - Indexings Effect on Custom WebParts, W3WP and the Application Pool Hi to ALL I have been living and breathing SPS 2003 indexing and its intricacies for a while now and have researched news often seeking guidance for our problem. No Cigar and I am going slowly batty with a swirling mind of unknowns. The symptom of our problem is that despite having a brand new dual xeon Pentium with 4 Gig of ram and RAID 5 we are running out of memory during the site directory indexing schedule. Our site directory has 600 odd collaboration WSS sites that our engineering oriented audience authors heavily to daily. These WSS sites have approximately 4-5 custom web parts which present valuable information to our engineers from various legacy systems. To populate these web parts we use web services. I have pinned our actual memory problem down to the indexing of these sites because during the indexing of every WSS site I have proved the 5 web parts fire off requests to our web service to retrieve data from the various legacy systems. I have learnt this creates w3Wp.exe threads for the SPS Application Pool to manage. Each one of these threads steals resources which are scarce during an index. Eventually the Application Pool creates so many threads that it runs out of memory and dies a pathetic death. To make matters worse every WSS site has 4 ASPX views for each site. When the user navigates to one of these WSS sites we interrogate their active directory group and re-direct them to the ASPX view that is suitable for their business unit. The problem is every time the index gatherer each single WSS sites it reads all 5 ASPX views and spawns 5*5= 25 threads of web part queries. That's 15,000 unnecessary queries and W2Wp.exe threads every two hours throughout the day. Of course all of this ignores the knock on effect on network traffic and the legacy systems themselves which are used throughout the organisation. Obviously we need to stop these web parts populating during the index. Initially we tried in vain to use site and path rules to stop this. Whilst we have come up with a raft of solutions I know we will eventually get working I wanted to ask some questions of the community regarding what is the best practice for this situation and what you thought the expected outcome should be under this scenario? 1. I can see the logical benefits of populating web parts during an index crawl if we want to index the actual data returned to the web part, but it is not clear to me this web part data is indexed and or even if it it's supposed to. Should it? Is there a simple way to control it? 2. Is there a standard way in SPS to stop this happening? Will a Robots.txt entry work ? {The site directory was created with SPS and therefore is hosted in the same IIS directory as SPS} 3. Will a HTTP_User_Agent variable be populated? Obviously one of the strategies available to us is to change our web parts to interrogate the credentials of the index gatherer and not populate the web parts if the user is in a certain group However am I missing something all together here? Lastly but not least SPS being a system that utilises a corporate database backend like SQL Server I do not understand why an Incremental index process needs to crawl everything to determine if its changed first? This seems ludicrous, When documents or lists are changed why aren't they flagged in the SQL database in real-time and then directly indexed during a scheduled incremental update? This Update list would be achieved with a single simple query to the database. Thanks for reading this far. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.     - How do I remove "left-overs" from a workspace-removal? Several months ago a workspace was removed in our SPS2001-installation. Now we find that the left-overs from this removal are hindering an upgrade to SPS2003. It seems that userrights-assignments on folders within this workspace prevented the workspace from being completely deleted. Do anyone know of a way to remove the rest of the folders and items within this "semi-workspace" so that we eventually can get rid of it? We have tried with deleting items from Explorer and Exchange Explorer with different users - trying to use users that seems to have the correct rights. We cannot access the folders within the old workspace because it is no longer recognized as a workspace - meaning we cant access the contents through webfolders, for instance. Any help appreciated.     - SSP 2003: Question on indexing and include/exclude rules Hi all, I have an installation with over 600 sites under a site directory. The default.aspx page in each of these sites has 6 web parts that query 2 databases and a web service to get its contents... Everytime the indexing is fired for the site directory, the index service attempts to access these pages and impacts on the processor, memory, threads, etc and performance is compromised. I have setup exclude/include rules to exclude ALL *.aspx pages, dwg and cal files as follows to attempt to block out access to the aspx pages: http://server/*/*.aspx Excluded http://server/*/*.dwg Excluded http://server/*/*.cal Excluded http://server/sites/sites/* Included In essence, I would like to include contents in the sites for example in http://server/sites/sites/2001/documents and http://server/sites/sites/2001/pictures and all the lists inside site 2001 but not the aspx pages or the contents at the level of http://server/sites/sites/2001/ The full index on the site directory attempts to access the site at the level http://server/sites/sites/2001 and because the default.aspx is the default page, the database web parts fire up and causes the performance nightmare, where the cpu runs at 100%, the worker threads fail and iis application process has to be restarted. Hey guys,

Well recently my company has given me the go ahead on updating SPS2003 with the new SP1 that Microsoft has released. I did some research involving the service pack and it was advised that I perform a full backup before I update.
So I went along with the admin guide and performed a full backup of SPS2003. It said that the backup was successful without any problems. So then I proceeded to install the update and it prompted me to install the WSS SP1 first and then
the SPS SP1 update. Both of the SP1's were installed successfully and the update installed fine. To make a long story short...or (shorter) I came in this morning to find that the update has changed some of the customizations that I have done to the style sheets.

Firstly... I don't understand why just an udpate would change the style sheets...but it did..Anyways now when i try to restore the backup that I made yesterday it says that the Manifest file is a different version of SPS2003????
Now it won't restore back to what I had backed it up to??? Oh man all the hard work doing those customizations....

Can anyone help me or give me some insight on what I can do to resolve this problem?? Please I need some help because if not I have wasted a lot of precious time....
