We recently added a certificate to our server that
requires us to change our url from http:// to https://.

This has caused the portal search to stop functioning
because it can't find the original url. How can I change
the url that the search points to without creating a new
portal? The admin area for creating a new portal was the
place I could find for changing the url.

Thanks for your help!!

Let me just add that I tried to make the change at

Portal > Site Settings > Configure Search and Indexing >
Manage content sources

but the url for my portal is grayed out so I can't change
it there.

I haven't tried this myself, but maybe configuring this as the default URL
will solve your problem. You can find the setting at:

SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration > Configure Alternate Portal
Access Settings > Change Alternate Access Setting
