    - Export/Import data between Sharepoint pages hello all we have a sharepoint page where we store information of events from our different offices. Would also like to have local pages at each office to have the details of the local events. So how can i go about doing this with the user having to input data only once? Is there a way to update two different pages at two different locations at the same time ? Or I let the users add items to the Master page and sync up the local pages automatically ? I am now trying to modify one of the columns (which is a 'choice' type field) and just add one more choice. When I try to add the choice (and even if click ok without modifying the choices) I get the error: Cannot complete this action. Please try again. Actually I get the same error is I try to modify ANY column and click OK without actually making any changes. I have seen some other people mention this same error but haven't seen any solution. The only different thing I have done is connect this list to another list. I tred removing the connection and then modifying the choice but I still get the same error.     - Issues with SPS Area security... I've seen several articles with people complaining about area security not working as described. None of the proposed solutions I've seen posted seem to work. I have disabled anonymous access to the portal, so users cannot get in until I place them into the 'reader' site group on the main page in Manage Users. I want all users to be able to access the Home page, and they can once I add them in here. What I need to do, is control access to areas so that only certain groups can access certain areas. I need the areas to disappear from the navigation toolbar at the top of the page if they do not have access. This seems very simple: go into the area that I want to lock down, click on Manage Security, then make sure that only the users and Active Directory groups I want to have access are listed. I also made sure it set to "Only users with the View Area right can see this area on the navigation hierarchy." and "These permissions are not inherited from the parent area." I've seen multiple posts (and even the SP Prod & Services Resource Kit book) say that this is how you do this. It does not work however - everyone can still see everything. What am I missing???     - Guest access - where does it come from? I have given a domain group access as Reader to a WSS site and to two document libraries. I have created cross-site groups for some users to have access to the other document libraries. On the document library manage users page, the cross-site groups appear and are listed as Guests -- where does that come from and what effect does that have on permissions? For example... Problem: one user is part of the domain group with Reader access for the one doc library and is also in one of the cross site groups with Contributor access for another doc library. For the library where she is just part of the large domain group with reader access she is not able to download data. The doc library owner had to go in and add her as a Contributor, then she was able to download. I do not understand this or the role of "Guest". Any help is much appreciated!     - Immediate Alerts not working on the Portal Server Hi All I have a server farm consisting web front end, index/job server and a database server. I have 8 portals on the server farm and have shared services enabled. The portal that provides the shared services and hosts mysites. Six of them have team sites on them and in one of the portals we are storing documents. Immediate alerts work as expected on the portals that provide shared services and the team site but they do not work on the portals where we are storing the documents in areas, thus using the portal content index on the server. When ever the index is updated the immediate alerts seem to get sent. I suspect it's the way I have built the index. Can someone tell me what the problem may be?     - Sharing a web-part between areas I have two areas under the main site, 'news' and 'org'. I want to use the same default calender web-part in both these areas, but in the news have it displayed as the list view and in 'org' have it displayed in the grid view. When I attempt to install the client I receive an error that Outlook Express must be installed before the client can be installed. This is strange as Outlook Express is installed.     - Error "This form is not available for this list..." Hi, I created a WSS site that has a Document Library and a few custom lists. The Document Library has some custom fields added which are actually "lookup" fields to those custom lists within the site. I then created a view in the Document Library which groups by this custom field. The grouping works fine, but the group headers (which are actually links to the custom list item) are not working. When someone would click on a header before they would be taken to the custom list item. But now they are taken to an error page: ============= Error This form is not available for this list, discussion board, survey, or document library. ============= This used to work, and I don't see that anything changed on the site or with any of these list items since late August. I also opened the WSS site in FrontPage to check modified date on all the site pages, didn't see any recently modified. I thought perhaps the custom lists were part of the issue.     - How to change the URL of the SPP-Server?? Hi All, I need to rename the URL at which SharePoint Portal is running. Currently the server's name is NTSPP01. But in the near future it should be sharepoint.firma.de Via "My Computer"-->"Properties" I can change the computername from ntspp01 to sharepoint. Due to the fact that the server is in the windows-domain firma.de you can already reach it via http://sharepoint.firma.de , but all SPP-internal links still point to http://sharepoint . Unfortunately not every user's browser has the domain-search-extension firma.de therefore the URL must be changed from http://sharepoint to http://sharepoint.firma.de ! --> where do I need to apply these changes? In IIS-Manager I couldn't yet find any possibility in the so called "Default-Website" to apply such changes.     - Lists and FrontPage Hi, I've been trying to use the Frontpage DVWP to insert web parts in an area or site that point to lists or document libraries from other area / sites. From within FrontPage, when I chose Data - Insert data view, I can select other content sources and that works fine !. I export the DVWP and import it to any other Page / Area with no problems. Because I wanted a fully functional Web Part, I also tried (from FP) to insert a Web Part (not a data view), then transform it to XSLT, then export it, and finally insert it on some other area / page.     - Virtual host with host header: Some URL's written using machine name?! Hi, We just deployed SPS 2003 on a machine with a few other web sites. We have configured the SPS to have a host header: portaldev.domain.com. This works just fine for me, using IE or Firefox. One of our users, running IE, views the same page and gets links that look like: http://<netbios machine name>/sites/.. etc I traced it from my end and I see nothing in the headers to be at cause. The links do seem relative, so maybe the NTLM is taking the value it uses for negotiation (the actual server name?) and using that for constructing relative links.. Any ideas?     - Setting Security Rights I feel like an idiot because I'm sure there is an easy answer to this, but I can't seem to find it. We just setup an SPS - W2K3 AD - SQL 2000 all seperate boxes. Since I installed it, I would assume I have full administrative access. When I created the root site, I also assigned another person administrative access. Both him and I are Domain Admins. I gave my boss a reviewer role so he could see what is going on, but he can change the site as well. He too is also a Domain Admin. I'm assuming that the AD security overrides the portal security? How do I make it so that only the two of us have rights to change the site, and make everyone else reviewers regardless of the AD permissions, without disabling the Windows Integrated Authentication, we have to have single sign-on but not anonymous access. I would ultimately like to use the roles in SPS for our designers and contributors and such, while still having the AD permissions, but nothing higher than what they have.     - Using the same content database for two sites Is it possible on the same server to have two seperate sites use the content database on the same server. Example, If I have site A Intranet that houses content that all the users of the company update on a consistent basis, and I want to create a site B Extranet that external users can see some content from site A. In this scenerio I want all the users who work on site A to update their content and it reflect on site B.     - Replace document in SPS2003 and retain the metadata that was already there I have people who want to update their documents in SharePoint 2003 but the update came to them in an e-mail. I also have some people who are in charge of an area and they upload file on the behalf of others. In either case, If we upload a document into to SharePoint to replace the existing one, the existing metadata gets wiped out if they overwrite the old file with the new one (which I thought was the recommended method -- name both files have the same name, replace the old with the new, keep metadata from the old one, just like in SPS2001). It's just not working though, and I need to find a workaround to let users keep their old metadata. We already have them fill out an exhaustive form, so it's a real annoyance to have to fill it out again any time a document is updated outside of SharePoint 2003. All I can think of is copy and pasting the contents of the new document into the old one, or lining things up in datasheet view and copying over metadata. Both methods are extremely cumbersome and not at all failsafe. Does anybody have any ideas or references I could check? Again, I want to replace a document but keep the metadata that is already in SharePoint. I know you could do it in SPS2001, but I can't seem to do it in SPS2003.     - MySite permissions Hi, I notice the following rights that seem to relate to the way in which a user can use the SPS "My Site" feature: 1) Create Personal Site - Create a personal SharePoint site 2) Use Personal Features - Use alerts and personal sites 3) Update Personal Web Parts - Update Web Parts to display personalized information 4) Add/Remove Personal Web Parts - Add or remove Web Parts on a personalized Web Part Page We deployed our Portal site with permissions for (1) and (2) granted to the Contributor site group, and since then several users have already created their "My Site". We have one web part which is part of the My Site private view, for which users need to personalise some properties, so we have since added right (3) to the Contributor site group. It has since been decided that users also need a further web part in their My Site private view, which wasn't included when the Portal was first deployed. Am I right in thinking that once the first My Site has been launched, changes to the My Site template have no effect? Ie in order to add a further web part to users' "My Site" pages is it necessary to grant them right (4) and let them add it themselves (which means they are then free to add/remove other web parts too)? Or is there a way to make these changes globally, or at least to all subsequent My Sites, without recreating the Portal from scratch? Relating to the above, what are the possible implications on performance/security/storage/other, caused by granting a large group of users rights (3) and (4) above? I would like it to display the name of the day of the week instead of the mm/dd/yyyy format. I know there's a way to make a calculated field where it would show Tuesday instead of 10/26/2005. Hi there,

I have a problem with my sharepoint servers.
I want to store the personal sites in only one of my servers, and for it, I
have activated the shared services in the server where I want to store them,
but when I go to the other one to configure the option "Use personal site
services", I check it and wirte the url of my server but nothing happens, I
press Ok button and it doesn't work, and If I go again to the previous config
page, the option appears again without check...

What am I doing wrong??

My understanding is that the MySites can only go on one server and
where you place the MySites is usually established when you first set
the topology of your portal, and probably can't be changed after that.
The exception might be where you did not enable MySites during the
initial setup.
