Hi,

I have a server in bad condition with SPS (v2 Beta) and
seperate SQL server.

I want to create new server and make it the same as the
first one (with all portals, sites, directories, data).

Can I do it easily by adding the second server to the
same DB and then removing the first one (like shadow set
in VMS) ?
If so, what exactly should I do ?

thanks

I don't know if SPSv2 have a backup/restore function just like sps2003.
I use this function to migrate my portal server between different servers.

First, you want to upgrade to RTM. (The backup/restore does not work well
in beta 2 and sometimes doesn't work right in beta 2 TR and the
backup/restore is NOT compatible between versions). Then you want to use
the backup restore tool to backup the entire portal and restore it to the
new server. I have an article on msd2d.com about how to migrate from a
single server to a small farm. It isn't exactly your situation, but 95+% of
the article will apply to migrating to a new server if you want to look for
more detailed steps.

thanks,

I'm looking for your article but couldn't find it.
Is th migration means I don't need to backup/restore -
just migrate to a farm and then remove the problematic
server and all data will be kept ?

No, by "migrate" backup/restore is used. To keep your data and change
servers the only way to do so is to use backup and restore.
