    - Yet another search peculiarity: My Site Links I Can't search My Site Links yet can search other links. I'm continuing a systematic test of the search capacity and failures (bugs?) in SPS and WSS have found a new problem. Why can't you see results returned for a search of links on the home page of a My Site? After adding a listing to the default My Links Summary, search fails to return results. I'm testing this on a fresh install of SPS, SQL, IIS, etc. I've reset the content indexes and completed full updates. I've added add/remove rules to the portal_content index to pick up list items and they work everywhere else including other list web parts in the very My Site in question.     - Alerts returning netbios, not FQDN items I setup a few search alerts logged into a portal using a FQDN extranet address. I recieved confirmation via email with the correct FQDN address. I then added a couple of items with the correct search terms to trigger the alert and recieved them with the correct URLs. Later after resetting the search indexes, I started recieving alerts with results pointing to the Netbios name of the portal as well as other host header entries for the IIS websites connected to this site.     - New column in uploading document window I am trying to add a new column in to display when you upload a document. This is easy. The problem comes in because I want this new column to be dependent on the column before it. For example, by default, you have the title, owner, and status field. I want those three to show up but if you were to select final under status, I would like for a new field to pop up and give the user a choice of document to choose from. So if the user were to choose final, a new drop-down would appear where they would choose whether it is a word file or excel file (just an example). I would appreciate anyone's help.     - Employee Appraisal Solution Needed We have installed SPS2003 SP1 and are in the process of migrating our intranet and training users. Our Sales Director would like to have a framework for tracking his employees' strengths, needs, goals, and achievements for appraisals. We've tossed around 3 Sharepoint-centric ideas: 1. Lists 2. Document Libraries (Excel or Word template) 3. InfoPath Form Libraries Each has strengths and weaknesses, and a recurring issue we've run into is how to handle security on an item-by-item level, so people don't have access to someone else's information but are able to edit their own. The Director and his manager both need to view and edit all items, and do a side-by-side comparisons between various documents (e.g., what the person listed as personal strengths vs what the manager listed as that person's strengths). Can someone point me in the direction of a solution? We're not opposed to buying a third-party product if it is affordable, but it seems like we should be able to come up with something in Sharepoint with one of the above three and/or web parts and I'm sure others have dealt with this same issue.     - Sharepoint authentication with Active Directory We put up Sharepoint 2003 running on a Windows 2003 standard server. It's running on an Active Directory network. Our company is new to Active Directory, and we are actually an OU several levels down. Before the server was added to the Active Directory we could authenticate people coming into the portal via the extranet on either our old NT domain, or our new AD domain. Since we added the server to the AD domain, we can still authenticate people on the old NT domain, however we can not authenticate people on the AD domain unless we change an incompatibility level in the registry. I can't imagine having to make our users change their registry settings on their home computers to be able to work from home. I have the AD migration team stumped with this one. Does anyone have any ideas why users can't authenticate against the AD domain like they can against the NT domain? The NT domain is going away next week so I really need to get this solved! Thanks!     - Problem Finding SPS MMC Snap-in Just went thru the installation of the evaluation version of SPS 2003 on a clean W2K3 server.(well my definition of clean anyways) I was able to successfully complete the initial configuration using the web interface with the admin port setup in IIS by the SPS installation. None of the options under All Programs-->Sharepoint Portal Server All Programs-->Administrative Tools-->Sharepoint Central Admin direct me to a MMC type admin console. I am aware that I cannot do administration remotely using the MMC so I'm attempting to do this on the machine that has SPS installed.     - Using SPSBackup to migrate to new servers I've been reading numerous posts on the subject of recovery but haven't seen this specific problem mentioned. I'm restoring a SPS Portal from a small server farm (1 web, 1 database server) to a single server. I've done this successfully but with a couple caveats. First of all, there seem to be some custom web parts in this portal as they show up on the destination server with errors (Error â?[1]â?¬ Web Part Error: A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Web Part Page cannot be displayed or imported because it is not registered on this site as safe.) Secondly, there are some "Contacts" images that were stored on the other server that now don't show up when accessing the Portal from the new (restored to) server. When you click on them, you are prompted to connect to the old server. When you supply the proper credentials, the image appears. The problem is that you obviously don't want links to defunct servers on your restored Portal. What can be done to fix this and what kind of best practices should be enforced to prevent this? Particularly about the tasklist which can be updated through the MSWord workspace pane. I noticed Word 'knows' if there are any tasklist in the source site available, when I open a document, but is there anyway I can let Word add the new tasks in an issues list or for that sake any other (custom) list with the right attributes?     - Error accessing database I'm trying to install a test version of SPS on a clean machine running Windows 2003 Server. The installation succeeds, but in the subsequent setup steps, I get the following error: "Error accessing database. Verify that the database server name and the instance name (if present) are correct.     - Sharepoint -- several issues - help please? I've recently installed SharePoint PortalServer 2003, and the entire team is really enthused about it. We have experienced a few problems with it, so I'm a bit concerned about going down the road any further with it until I can get them resolved. First, after installing the latest service packs for SharePoint services and SharePoint Portal Server, the entire site was destroyed, and it wouldn't allow me to reinstall until I reinstalled Windows and started from scratch on a clean machine. This was not that big a deal, since I had built the machine specifically for SPS, but we did lose some setup time. I have not tried to install the service packs again, and people are now using the system. Is there a known problem with the service packs. (Could it be due to a marginal server? I'm pretty sure this machine is around 900MhZ, with 256 or 512 meg of ram.) Related to this, I've been doing daily backups using the SPS backup facility. In the event that I have to reinstall everything, will these backups allow me to fully restore the system? Second problem: after using it successfully and making no .major changes, we discovered that the link to "Create a SharePoint site from the Portal Site" (Under "Enabling Collaboration", now give us a: "Page cannot be found" error. When I go to create a form library, there are no forms (the default ones which come with InfoPath) available.     - Invalid Credential Problem with SharePoint Portal Server I am getting a 401.1 error after exactly 30 minutes of access to an application running on our Portal Server. Here are some details: - the server is running Windows 2003 Server (Standard) with Sharepoint Portal Server 2003. All the updates have been applied. - if I open a document in any document list for more than 30 minutes, I get authentication errors when I want to write it back. (I get a login dialog box but it will not accept any valid userid/password.) - if I open a document on the Portal Server through webDAV, I get the same behaviour as if I opened it in a document list in the Portal - Any application that runs as a web part through the Portal Server, or by itself, also crashes after exactly 30 minutes. - When viewing the IIS log, at the time the problem occurs, no userid is passed as a part of the client request. I have also used a tool from Microsoft recently that logs the credentials and have noticed that at the time of error a blank UserID is passed as part of the request. Until then, the userID is clearly visible. (We are using trusted Kerberos authentication between servers.) - I do not experience the problem with a Windows 2003 server that does NOT have the Portal Server installed. u have repeated the creation steps as u did on dev environemnt. or u have to
backuo the dev portal and then recover it on production server.
