 - Local admins are sharepoint admins I work for a company as a tier 3 support person. I have because of this domain admin rights. By default domain admins are put in the local administrators group on each server. this means that most of my colleagues for whom I am trying to set up sharepoint portal server are also doing the same thing and can all administer sharepoint.  - Linking Cell In Excel in Sharpoint Document Libraries Here we go.... 1.) I have a team site that has serveral document libraries in it with security setup for certain personel to have contributor access to their own document library. There are 2 excel spreadsheets in this document library. When you click on one of these it pulls information from a cell in the other spreadsheet that resides in the same document library and everything is fine. 2.) There is another document library in this particular team site that security is setup so that the personel that have contributor rights to their own document libraries DO NOT have but VIEW LIST rights to this document library. (clear as mud yet) haha. 3.) back to number 1.) where personel clicks on the spreadsheet in their own document library and it is pulling data down from the other spreadsheet in their own document library it is also pulling data from the spreadsheet in the document library that they only have VIEW LIST rights to. Everything still works but it brings up that spreadsheet after opening the original spreadsheet. We are not sure why it is coming up even if it is pulling the correct information out of that spreadsheet. Question is..... is there another way to keep this spreadsheet from coming up other than giving more access to the document library that only has VIEW LIST rights on it?? We are not sure why security would be an issue here and just wandering if anyone has come accross this???  - File Size timeouts I have an overall 20MB file size limitation set for our portals; however, in many cases it takes a LONG time to get a file size error; much of the time the user just waits for 5+ minutes and never gets anything (they then need to CTRL-ALT-DEL to get out of the upload), or assorted PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED etc. come up. Is there any way to configure timeouts or other parameters relating to behavior when the file size a user is trying to upload exceeds the set limit? TIA.  - Cannot access, rename or delete folder in SPS2001 I am running SPS2001 with SP3. Recently, a user has renamed a folder in the document library from "S and P" to "S and P, including S&P-MSCI GICS Direct" Trying to access this folder via HTTP gives a 404 page not found error. Accessing it via a network place gives: Query cannot be completed because of the error (0xc004800a): No description was found for this error. If I try to rename it, I get: Folder cannot be renamed because of the error (0xc004800a): No description was found for this error. I believe there were 3 docs in that folder that I would like to get back. They are no biggie though, I would at least like to be able to remove or rename this folder.  - SharePoint SQL DB We have a SPS but the SQL DB is on another server on the network, a Great Plains system that runs SQL 2000.  - SharePoint SQL DB We have a SharePoint Portal server on our network, however, the SQL DB resides on another server that we use for Great Plains because this is where our licensed SQL 2000 is loaded. Having SP point to this other server for SQL DB purposes won't create a problem for GP, or will it????? Have we violated any MS best practice?  - SPS 2001 SP3 Restore failure I am trying to load the backup file from my live server to a test server. They are both running W2K Advanced Server SP4 and SPS 2001 SP3. The restore runs for a couple of hours but then (after the data files has seemingly finshed being restored) I get the error message "8007000D" "The data is invalid" Do both servers need to have exactly the same partition setup wtih SPS loaded on identical partitions? The live server has the data file on a different partiton than the application. the test server has only a large C: partition. Thanks!  - Alphabetize Views Is there any way to alphabetize or otherwise rearrange the items in the "Select a View" column of a custom list? I have a list with dozens of different views on it, and whenever I create a new view it adds it to the bottom of the list. For ease of use, I'd like to alphabetize it.  - SPS2003 installation confusion - help! Hi Folks We are planning a single server SPS2003 to be used for things such as our college intranet/website. We will be running Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2000 Std. I've read a fair amount of the documentation but am still confused about various things - primarily what accounts should be used during installation. 1. During the installation of SQL server we will be asked for what type of authentication we want. Which should we choose? SQL or integrated? 2. What account should we specify for SQL? A local or domain account? Should this be an existing account such as a domain admin? 3. During the SPS installation we are asked a similar thing. The account needs to have at least power user status on the local machine. I take it that I could use a domain account and add it to the power users group on the server for this purpose. Should this be a domain account? Should I create an account specifically for this? What are the pros and cons? Apologies for so many questions.  - Need help setting up alerts I have a few owners of the company I work for, that watch to see if documents are regularly updated. These documents are in several differant sites, and document libraries. Is there a way to set up alerts for multiple sites and/or document libraries at the same time? Or does this have to be set up on each document library in each site one at a time? they visit hundreds of sites and it would take hours to setup each alert one at a time.  - Rich Text Editor I am having issues with the Rich Text Editor not working correctly in Sharepoint Services. It works on some machines and not others. When I go to edit content, I get a pop-up message saying "Cannot open the Rich Text Editor". I found a previous thread that discussed this error but nothing was ever resolved. Does anyone know the cause of this? The specific machine that I am having problems with has XP, Office 2003 and Frontpage loaded. I've cleared the browser cache, added the server into the trusted zone, made sure javascript was enabled, and all the other little browser configs that I could think of. Nothing seems to be working.  - Replicating data in a sharepoint web farm We are installing a 2003 SP farm and want to use two servers in an NLB cluster acting as web front ends. I cannot find any info on the recommended method for sychronizing the web content between these two boxes - can anyone point me in the right direction? We've been looking into using DFS to do it.  - Portal alert schedule isn't taking effect I've set my weekly and daily alerts to be sent at 1pm accoring to the 24 hour clock. I also checked using the GetProperty function to make sure my alert schedule took effect. The server was even rebooted after we made the change. However, users are still getting alerts in the middle of the night on the old schedule. What else can you do to force it? I've checked both the specific virtual server and the alert settings for the entire farm and both show alerts should be sent at 13:00.  - simple? use 1 list troughout subareas/sites Probably a very simple question, but i can't find it out. I want to make a list within an area that is also available in all of its subareas (or -sites). Then I want to select per subarea or homepage of the area what I want to show from that list (i.e. filtering, sorting, limiting number of items). Similar, I'd like to have all latest items of lists that are spread throughout subareas on the homepage of the area (e.g. the last 2 items of all newslists within subareas and sites). How is this possible? I tried several things but didn't find out. Ik read something about a list view web part but that doesn't appear in my webpart list. Does anyone know the answer to this? Thanks!  - Install & config problems - HELP!! Hello all, I'm in the process of re-installing our sharepoint website and am having problems. Originally we had the sharepoint site that comes with SBS2003 out of the box. Which version is this? I've downloaded STSV2.exe and installed that using an exisiting SQL server. I am now trying to get the default pages up that we had before. When I go to the list of virtual servers in the sharepoint services admin page I get prompted to upgrade the virtual server.  - Script creation of config_db and portal Hi, I'm trying to automate the installation and configuration of SPS2003. Installing SPS2003 is not a problem since that is well documented how to do. However, I also want to create/connect a config db and create a portal via a script but to no joy. I tried the following: "stsadm -o setconfigdb -ds sqlserver\spstest01 -dn my_config_db" followed by "stsadm -o setconfigdb -connect -ds sqlserver\spstest01 -dn my_config_db" Both commands return "Operation completed successfully" However, when I browse Sharepoint Central Administration website it asks me to connect to or create to an exisitng config db. It looks like stsadm -o setconfigdb is valid if you only use WSS. Any ideas how to make this work?? Any help would be most appreciated!!  - Documents reindexing fails Hi, My Sps 2003 worked fine until now. Now when I try to reindex my documents the operation fails. When I open the index log I see that all the content sources in the index coudn't be accessed and the detail of the error is "The segment is already discarded and cannot be locked". I've tried changing the Index account but it didnt help. all my sps services seems to be ok. I've tried creating a new index and a new content source but the indexing returned the same error. in addition now I have no documents indexed (because all the docs were removed from the index and then the operation failed) so the problem is urgent Can someone help me please???  - This file is read-only Hi, I can edit and save a file (say a Word document) if I navigate through a Document Library folders, click on the file, open it in Word, edit and save. On the other hand, I cannot accomplish the same if this file's URL was sent to me by the doc auther via email! I click on the URL of the file in the email, the file opens in Word in the browser, make my changes and close the browser. I am then presented by a dialog box asking me if I want to save, discard changes or cancel. I press Save and BANG, an error message "This file is read-only" appears. I am using WinXP & Office 2k3.  - After applying WSS and SPS SP1, site stops working hi, I applied WSS SP1 and SPS SP1 to my dev machine. After applying these patches, site is partially working. I mean my own site's top menu is partially gone. Top menu shows some pop-up links on mouse hover on some of the main menus. Then I had some options on the left navigations (under common Actions heading). That has totally invisible. I have following softwares installed on my machine: W2K3, Sharepoint 2003, Office 2003. Any guesses what I did wrong. Note: After applying these services packs, some pages were breaking, so I re-installed/re-registered one assembly, and then its working. I am wondering if I need to re-register all the assemblies to make the site work again. If this is the case, then how I can do that programmatically because I have to deploy it at run-time.  - Urgent! - Create new Document / XML item Programatically Hi, I have been stuck with this problem for 2 weeks any input would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to use a document library or form library for workflow purposes. However the user will not have any documents to upload so I just need away to fudge it so that when a new item is added a text file or xml file is uploaded to either a document library or form library in the background. I've tried using RPC's and to no avail. I've also tried autofilling the upload form and that does not work either. Is there a way I can post xml from an xml webpart to a document or webpart library?  - Anonymous Access SPS2003/Win2003 I have created a virtual server and enabled anonymous access to it.  - Triggering emails from a list I've set up a team Sharepoint site for a Program that consists of several projects. We are tracking risks & issues and have thoses lists set up to send an email to the Assigned Owner - this works fine. Similarly, I've set up an Action Items list & use the Assigned Owner field.  - Migration from SPS2003 to SPS2003 Hi there, I was wondering if anybody has done the server move from one SPS2003 to another within the same domain. I can use the same admin domain account but like to have a new server NetBios name and new URL for the new SPS server. This way, I don't need to take a current box offline to setup a new box with the same name. Do I need to use any tool? I was thinking about using SQL server database move but not sure if this will be clean because I am changing the URL. I am not sure this will be clean move for the customizations, like web parts installed, etc. This procedure would serve as a plan for production move from Dev box. I am trying to set up sharepoints for teachers at the district I work at to allow students to login with a student account to "hand in" their completed work into the teachers sharepoint site. I do not have problems with the permissions to upload files but I do not want the students to be able to view other students work that has already been uploaded to sharepoint.  - Strange - unique Windows group perms on a portal area not applying Hi There I wonder if anyone has come accross this or could offer an explanation: We have a sub area heirarchy on one of our child portals. Typically, I use site groups to apply more portal-wide permissions on this area structure, and, when unique permissions are required on a specific sub-area (e.g. a "private" area), I add permissions for a Windows (AD) security group. This removes inheritance at the level of the area this Windows user group is added to. At this point, I may or may not also remove site groups from having permissions on this sub-area (not in this case). Recently, I had complaints from several users reporting they were not able to perform tasks on a certain sub-area. The users had also lost the area "Actions" links corresponding to their expected rights. I investigated and found that the Windows security group that those users were a part of DID still have the correct permissions on the area as per the area "Security settings" page. I also checked that the users were still members of the correct group. To attempt to fix the issue I tried removing and then re-adding the group to the area permissions and then performing an IISreset. Still no success. Finally I tried adding another unrelated security group to the area permissions (not one that these users were a part of). Once the new group was added, memebers of the existing group regained their original rights on the area. I then removed the "test" security group and the correct permissions for the users remained. Since then I have rebooted the server and everything has been OK. We are gradually increasing the number of users on our production Sharepoint environment and I want to make sure it is not an issue with our configuration before it becomes to difficult to make major changes etc or worse Has anyone seen behaviour like this before?  - InstallProducts Status 1620 I started with a fresh installation of Windows Server 2003 and installed IIS and ASP.NET. I created a domain svc-sharepoint account and gave it local admin rights. When I insert the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 cd and click Install Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 components it prompts me to stop services. I click OK. It stops the services, but it does not install SharePoint. I says SPS is not installed, then it tries to remove WSS. Then installation stops.  - Sharepoint Survey Is there a way to prevent users from creating certain types of Survey questions? I am transferring data from surveys into another program that I only want combo boxes (dropdown boxes) to be used. A couple of the fields that I want to prevent users from creating are lookup and multiple lines of text. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to customize this, if it is possible?  - User does not get "Alert Me" link I initially set up a portal for our department. Recently, I added a few people from outside the department to specific areas in our SPS 2003 portal and they do not see the "Alert Me" link although they seem to have the same permissions as the department users.  - WSS Restore I had a SBS 2003 with Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 installed. Something happened with the server and I had to reinstall the entire server. I made a backup of the MSSQL$Sharepoint folder under SQL Server. I tried installing Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 but I still got errors. So then I decided to just install Windows Sharepoint Services in SBS 2003. I went through a couple of tech articles on Microsoft to manually remove Sharepoint so that SBS 2003 would install WSS. Now I have a clean install of WSS on my server that works fine. I have tried to restore the MSSQL$Sharepoint folder using NT Backup and rebooted my server. When I go to http://companyweb I get the following error; "The virtual server that is referenced here is not in the config database." What other steps am I missing to fully restore my old database?  - Search Properties for the word "No" Hi folks. We have various meta-data properties that have either radio buttons or drop-down options; the values are "Yes" or "No". I'm able to search properties with Yes values. However, when I try "no" I get the "search term is common.." error message.  - Sharepoint Portal Server/WSS I have WSS installed and working on a 2003 enterprise server. I have been looking at SharePoint Portal Server and am not sure if it is a stand alone program that replaces WSS or if it runs in conjunction with WSS.  - Doc Ave 2.5, since October 2004? I've seen several posts regarding Doc Ave, but they were all posted prior to the October 2004 release of Doc Ave 2.5. Does anybody have current experience with 2.5 and are you happy that you shelled out the money for it? Can you easily restore a sub-sub-site that Joe user deleted or otherwise destroyed. Or, can you easily restore a document in a Document Library of a subsite that didn't have versioning history turned on? I understand that Doc Ave generates a flat file for the backup data that can be created on a network drive which can then be subsequently added to the current tape backup scheme of the enterprise. Then, tomorrow, when the user accidentally deletes a file you can grab yesterday's tape, restore the Doc Ave flat file, run Doc Ave, and then restore the individual document? We sometimes create subsites with other languages template pack but unfortunately the specific list does not show up on these site when you Create new list. This is by design in WSS. we are thinking of using sharepoint to manage our documents. currently all
our documents are handled by site server. I am trying to get information,
tools about moving documents from site server to sharepoint but with little
