    - Backup and Restore Problem - HELP, HELP, HELP, HELP I am using SPS 2001 and had some problems with the whole backup and restore process and was hoping somebody would be so kind as to help me from getting fired. I called Microsoft to get some help and advice on how to do a backup of the system as we recently had some lost data and didn't a have any procedures in place. They showed me how to do this using msdmback /b, the file was created and saved. I then tried to restore the file using msdmback /r on the "production" server as instructed by the Microsoft Tech, which apparently is a no no because everything blew up. I should have known better, but I believed that he had more knowledge than I on the subject so I believed him. The restore hung and never completed and stuff got corrupt. We saved the wss.stm and wss.mdb files and then reinstalled SPS and the service pack hoping to simply restore the .bkf file or add back those two files and all would be well, but nothing is working. The .bkf file is now corrupt and we have been trying to use BKFRecovery to fix the file, but that isn't working. When we restored it we placed the program files on the D: Drive instead of the C: Drive. Would this make any difference at all in trying to get things working properly. For example does either of the wss files require a path that points to the location of C: where the program files used to be located? Does anyone know anything or anyway of how to get our data back onto SPS, because as of right now the thousands of stored documents only exist in a file we can't access. The only files we have are the two wss files and the corrupt .bkf file. After asking the Microsoft Tech what else to do the suggested: - remove Portal server form the computer and reboot. - install SPS RTM - create the workspace (consulting) that existed before and ensure these new blank ones work. - install SP2a - stop exchange service - backup the clean d:\program files\sharepoint portal server\data\web storage System\ WSS.mdb and WSS.stm files - copy the old d:\program files\sharepoint portal server\data\web storage system\ mdb and stm files over the new - start exchange ...but that didn't work either.     - ? Series Items ? Hi All! Wierd thing happening here. I created a document library. Added it to a zone and made it visible. I went into security and removed all users accept my administrators.     - Synchronization exception occurred - Event 202 I have installed SPS on our dev server using a small farm with a seperate SQL server.     - Portal Server 2003 fails to begin install I am trying to install Portal Server 2003 on Server 2003 EE, but when I click install, it errors saying "Invalid Logging File path specified".     - What are the SPS-compliant XML editors? I'm working with SPS 2003 and the forms libraries, and the functionality is great except for the required integration with InfoPath 2003. SPS pops up a message when users don't have InfoPath 2003 saying that they need an XML editor that is compliant with SharePoint.     - tracking document open/view Hi all, I am doing asked to produce a report on who opens a particular page and when. The scenario goes as this- my company has a new policy and procedure and everyone must read it. Now it is my job as the Sharepoint administrator to track who has and who hasn't open/viewed the document so that the bosses can prove that the memo was read by all employees (roughly 200).     - Managing subarea url When I create a subarea, it sometimes creates a url as follows : {parent_area}\C1\{subarea}. I want to remove the "C1" but I can't .     - Portal Area or WSS site? This is in continuation of my earlier question on targeting content. To summarize, we want to target content to customer from our WSS sites. Customer will be accessing their content via Extranet. One possible solution is to target content from a site to the portal area meant for the customer. Now the basic question -- Area and Site can have almost the same components like document library, lists, discussion forum, survey, etc. Which one is better for customer, particulary the customer should see only the targetted content, with some additional collaboration components.     - Site Members are all Offline Hi, When I open a document from a document workspace it lists all the members of the site, however, they are shown as offline even myself. I have a .NET passport but our firewall prevents me from logging into Messenger.     - Insert of account not possible when deleted before Hi, we have the following scenario: - Windows Server 2003 (without AD) - SQL 2000 - SharePoint Portal Server 2003 I have created different local user accounts and added them to a new local windows group. Then i assigned the group to SPPS2003 and gave them reader access. After some tests i deleted the group from SPPS2003 and then i deleted the group. Some days later i created a new local windows group with the same name for training issues. Now the problem: I can not add this group to SPPS2003 anymore, because the server tells me that the group account already exists! I can not find anywhere in the portal any reference to this group! The next problem is that i can see a user who has been in the old group and logged on once to the server and he is still viewable on the page "Site Settings" -> "Manage security and additional settings" -> "Show user information".     - how to deny users permission of a folder or file All, I am a newbie with this technology so I am not sure if this can be done. I am using SBS2003 Standard. Here is my question: I want to be able to deny certain single users access to information in a folder: Ex: I have a folder tilted "Sales" inside, I created separate folders with each sales rep name.     - Setting the default folder in Sharepoint Hi, I'm trying to set the Folder View for one of my directories as the default folder in the Documents Library. For the regular folders, I understand there is a check box to make the folder the default folder.     - Restore a portal to another server How do you restore a portal that was created on one server (say server 1) using one configuration DB to another server (say server 2) using another config DB. I've copied the backup files from the server 1 to server 2 and everytime I try to restore the portal I get errors related I believe to the configuration DB not being the one the portal expects. I've tried to copying the config DB from the server 1 to server 2 and associating SharePoint on the server 2 with the config DB from the server 1 (located on server 2) but I get an error stating that the configuration isn't supported. I've removed the reference to server 1s SQL server from the config DB on server 2 and made sure every component was pointing to server 2 but I still see the reference to server 1s SQL server in the admin page.     - Admin accounts problem, access denied crawling the portal I have a very hard (and stressful) time configuring my portal's administrative rights and accounts. Here is the error message I am getting when I try to crawl the portal: "6/30/2004 1:20:05 PM Add sps://<servername>/site$$$people The address could not be found, (0x80041205 - Access is denied. Check that the Default Content Access Account in SharePoint Central Administration is correct, or follow the "Exclude and Include Content" link to add a rule to specify the proper crawling account to access this URL. )" When I try to edit the Default Content Access Account to change the user account to one that all needed rights to the databases, it tells me to add an account that has the correct rights (I have give that user account every right on the SQL instance that I can think of). I had this problem with the WSS sites that I created, but this went away when I added the sites manually to the "Other Content Sources". I cannot get it to crawl the portal.     - News Listings on Portal Home Page Hi there, I have a question about posting news items onto the portal home page. We have several groups that need to post news in their own individual areas. Occasionally, however, they will also need to post their items on the portal home page. How can we set it up so that they don't have to post one news item in two places (first in their individual area, then also in the main News area for the home page)? Everyone has access to read content in each other's areas, so I don't think permissions should be an issue. I know they could just post all of their listings in the News area and drop it onto their individual pages (as was suggested to me in a support webcast), but I'm looking for a way for them to create the news listing inside their own area and push it out to the portal home page. I have a group of MAC users that currently use a file share and link pictures from that share in to different documents.     - MySite problem Hi, we are having an unusual problem with the MySite section on our portal. If you navigate to the public view of personal sites so for example http://server_name/MySite/public.aspx?accountname=domainname\username then its fine but as soon as any user with a MySite tries to go to their private site http://server_name/personal/username/default.aspx this problem occurs: List does not exist The page you selected contains a list that does not exist. It may have been deleted by another user. Click "Home" at the top of the page to return to your Web site. if you click on "Home" the error appears again. We only have about 5 users who have a MySite but the same error happens to all of them, does anyone know how i can find out what list has been deleted? this also happens for users who are clicking on "MySite" for the first time. Any Ideas??     - Tip: DO NOT delete the 'out of the box' user groups - SPS 2003 All, I have just come across an issue where I removed the existing 'Contributor' group and created my own new group (for name reasons - Project Managers). But, I found that the new group could not see or access the 'List template gallery', which meant that the users could not see any new templates that had been added to the main Portal site whn trying to create a new list. I would suggest to anyone wanting to define their groups in more detail that you add everyone who needs contributor access to the 'Contributor' group, but then for those that require a little more access and need to be added to a group with a better defined name such as 'Project Managers' that you add those users to both groups.     - Configuration Database Backup/restore question Hi, I am curretnly iinvestigating our disaster recovery for SharePoint, to do this i am reading the various backup/ restore information in the SharePoint Portal Administration Guide. My question is this, if we have a problem with the configuration database can i just restore this database from our backups or should i recreate it and what implications will this have? Sharepoint is set up so that we have a front end server running IIS6, SPS2003 and WSS and a backend server with the config and content databases.
