WSS Error managing site collection owners
When in the manage site collection owners page and trying to add a domain account as an owner I am receiveing the error "the user XXXX does not have an email address". When I look at my account in the AD I clearly have an email address in the E-Mail: field for my account. WHen I'm in the front end of the site I don't have any problem adding myself to site groups, cross site groups etc.. and it always finds my domain account and email address. Is this a bug or is the admin site configured differently from the front end site

Restore SPS and WSS sites
Is there anybody out there who can tell me exactly how to
restore WSS and SPS sites ?
I did a backup of the databases from the Portal
1. MyPortal1_SITE
2. MyPortal1_PROF
3. MyPortal1_SERV
Also from TeamDatabases
1. SPS_TeamDatabase.
I used the Backup and restore tool from SPS.
Now I did a restore and all of the databases are restored.
(on a different server )
My portal site is already running. (don't ask me why)
But I do not get my team sites to work. I created a new
Virtual server as mentioned in de help file. Now i want to
extend it and connect it to my Restored SPS_TeamDatabase.
After I fill in the information for Extending I get a
error saying "The website that is referenced here is not
in the configuration database". HOW THE HELL DO I DO
THAT ????
And if I don't get this message I get a message saying
that the content database already exists. HAAAAA , Yes it
exists, I just restored this.
Anybody an idea ??
Or does nobody uses backup and restore ????? Tag: How to set Web links to open by default in a new window in share point 2003 Tag: 35162
SPS 2003: Searching Document Library at the Portal Level
Hi all,
I have uploaded documents to several document libararies at the SPS
level (areas and categories and home page) and at the WSS level in
sites, I have uploaded all sorts of document types (word, xls, ppt,
etc).
I have reindexed the portal content but when I search from the home
page, none of the documents are returned in the results for the portal
level, only the wss documents are returned.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks.

Search and Task Scheduler
As far as I have found out, Sharepoint search is dependent on the Task Scheduler service running. Or, to put it more correct, the Sharepoint Central Administration service is dependent on Task Scheduler while the Microsoft Sharepoint Search service in turn is dependent on the Sharepoint Central Administration service.
This is all fine, and I have no search problems when all theese services are running. However, those responsible for the server farm in my company tells me that the Task Scheduler is a bad security risk, and they rather see it disabled.

Please Help with DspSts Question!
Okay, here is a specific question after fighting with DspSts all day long
for someone to ask the engineers:
Can DspSts support more than two conditions in it's queries or is it limited
to two or fewer conditions?
Based on my research given the one single page on all of MSDN that even
talks about DspSts, my ndQuery.InnerXml will work wonderfully with two or
fewer constructs of any type: <Eq> or <Lt> or <Gt> but fails 100% of the
time given more than 2 constructs which are valid.
Can anyone confirm or deny this limitation and if so, a workaround?

Exchange 5.5 crawling problems
We are trying to use SPS 2001 and have no issue with the sites or
crawling
files systems. But we can't seem to get the access account correct for
crawling Exchange 5.5.
Here is the setup.
SPS 2001 on separate machine - all services running as local system
account.
OWA on separate machine.
Exchange 5.5 on separate machine.
The local system account gives the message 'The start address
<exch://HSYSEmail/Public Folders/All Public Folders> cannot be
accessed.' .... 'A required privilege is not held by the client. '
The documentation says the access account should be an Exchange Mail
administrator. So if I configure that and click apply on the Exchange
5.5 tab, I get 'Unable to use the account information specified for
accessing the Exchange 5.5 server. Verify the account and password
information'.
If I create a domain account and give it site and site container
priviledges on the Exchange server and make it an administrator on the
SPS machine, I get 'Unable to use the account information specified
for
accessing the Exchange 5.5 server. Verify the account and password
information'. when I try to setup Sharepoint with this account.
Crawling always indicates 'A required privilege is not held by the
client. '
It is not clear what account should be starting all services and what
priviledges are needed on the access account for Exchange 5.5 or on
the
local SPS machine.
Can anyone shed any light on what I am missing? Thanks in advance for
any assistance.

Domain Authentication with SharePoint Portal Server 2003
Hello All,
Our company is looking at deploying a SharePoint Portal Server 2003
for the basis of our corporate intranet. I am looking to gather
information on how security for the SPS is integrated in conjunction
with the domain and/or Active Directory.
Here are some specific questions:
1. Are users that have been added to the domain automatically added to
the SPS. If they are added to domain groups, and those domain groups
are set up in SPS, do they automatically inherit the permissions of
that group on SPS? Or do they need to be added to both the domain and
the SPS separately?
This would seem like an administrative nightmare if this were not
possible - redundant work, increased margin of error, etc.
2. What about the same scenario as above, but without Active
Directory?
I am essentially looking to see how tightly integrated domain security
and SPS really are.
Any thoughts, insight, and/or resources would be greatly appreciated. Tag: How to set Web links to open by default in a new window in share point 2003 Tag: 35120
Changing default content sources
Hi everyone,
I recently had to change the server my SPS is running on and now some links
and search don't work correctly.
The problem is that search results and My Alerts and My Links have Urls with
the old server name.
For the search I tried changing the Content Source address for the default
sources (Portal, People, Site Directory) but the Address field is locked.
Does anyone know how I can change this?
The only way I can think of is to manually change this in the config/content
databases.

It's strange that the "edit access" of a survey, if granted, will not only
allow the user to submit a response to a survey, but also edit that

Ideally we want users to be able to respond to a survey, but not to make

SPS2003 Permissions Problem
Hi
I've posted already, but I think I wasn't making that much sense.
Noone on our portal can create surveys, not even administrators. Everything
else works fine (documents, links, discussions etc.)
I've tried to create new sites, and still, not luck.
But, when I create a whole new portal (on the same server, using a different
virtual web), there is no problem in this portal.
So, presumably, the problem is a permissions on that somewhere on our
portal, the rights to create surveys have been revoked. Can anyone help me
out - it's quite a major problem for us!

Reader role cannot expand web parts
MDAC was updated to version 2.8 on our SharePoint 2001 SP1 server the
other day by an install of Backup Exec 9.1. This update broke all web
parts with a script execution error. After removing MDAC 2.8 and
re-installing MDAC 2.7 SP1 REFRESH the server was displaying web parts
correctly, at least we thought. Today we found out that the web parts
only dislpay correctly for users that are in the Coordinator Role (not
many). All users that are in the Reader role are not able to expand
web parts if they are minimized. The + sign that normally showed up
in the upper right hand corner is not displayed for Readers, only
Coordinators. This worked fine before our mishap with the MDAC
install. Any one have any clues that might point me in a direction to
fix this?? I can't update to SP2a since we have some custom stuff
written that will break. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Problem with SPS/WSS Search
I've got a portal with subsites. Searching works just fine
at the portal level, but nothing is found if the search is
done at the subsite level. Portal level searches will find
documents in libraries in the subsites. Subsite level
searches find nothing.
As I research this, as I understand it, the subsite
searches should be using SQL Full Text catalogs. However,
on the SQL Server there are no Full-Text Catalogs for any
database..... ????
Does anyone know how to create these catalogs, and/or how
to get SPS to search the subsites. Looking at the logs
generated by the search crawler, all the content IS being
crawled. I just can't get a search done at the subsite
level to actually find anything....

Single Sign-On to lists on a WSS server
I want to display lists from a remote WSS server (hosted) in a site on
my Sharepoitn Portal Server
So I access the remote lists using the web services API and Frontpage
2003 Data View Web parts.
This works OK as long as I supply a user name and password.
Now I want to use Single Sign-on to access the remote lists. The SSO
Service is configured correctly (I think) and the application is
created with individual users settings.
Now the list access only works if I save the user's credentials
locally on the server using the SSO administration. What I want is
that the user is queried for credentials if they are not present on
the SSO server. All of this using FrontPage Data View Web Parts.
Any idea?
Is there a SSO credentials web part?
Is there a better way to access remote lists?

Do i need optional Backwards compatible components if using BCDL and upgrading from 2001?
Hi,
i'm upgrading from sharepoint portal 2001 to sharepoint portal 2003,
and understand i need the backwards compatible library for my 2001
documents until i can migrate them into sql server. However i am
confused by the .chm file which also refers to optional components for
the backward-compatible document store. Can anyone tell me whether
this is something i need in order to manupulate and manage the
documents i import into the backwards comp doc library? Or is this
just an optional component to install if you fancy using a web store
but have no 2001 documents to import, but i will already have it as
long as i perform the upgrade correctly, and install the BCDL?
Also if i added custom fields to a document profile and populated
these fields for documents, will this data be accessible in the BCDL?
The upgrade doc :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/office/office2003/deploy/upgrdmigrate/spST2003.asp
matches the .chm, but the .chm (microsoft office sharepoint portal
server 2003 administrators guide) in the Upgrading from Microsoft
SharePoint Portal Server 2001 section has a Quick Installation Guide
section which mentions the Installing the Component for
Backward-Compatible Document Libraries under the installing microsoft
office sharepoint portal server 2003 on a single computer section. I'm
hoping i don't need to perform this extra step? can anyone help? or
answer the profile fields question? thanks in advance.

Hi Guys,
I hope this is possible as otherwise its gonna be a pain in the arse...
What I'm trying to do is create a template for sub-areas of a particular
area. What I'd like is for these sub-area templates to include the web parts
for the page. I have sort of managed to do this, but the way I did it means
its simply a copy of the same data in each sub-area and if i change the data
in one, it changes in all of them. Is there a way that the web parts can be
included and contain a basic amount of data that can be changed to suit each
new sub-area without affecting the other sub-areas? I hope this makes
sense...
