    - Share Point and NLB configuration I have two front end servers which are in NLB configuration. On my network we use proxy to access Internet. Under proxy settings we are using â??bypass for local serversâ??. When I am trying to access my Share point server I receive an error â??You are not authorized to view this page, HTTP Error 401.2 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to server configuration. Internet Information Services (IIS)â??. If I put my server full host name in exceptions for proxy then everything is OK. My portal is A record in DNS and my teams sites are CNAME entries in DNS.     - How do you track file downloads inside SharePoint libraries? When using Microsoft SharePoint 2003 libraries and alerts, is there a method to track file downloads, since creating "alerts" to send you email notifications when a file is changed does not solve this issue. I only want to identify the number of file downloads per "item" or file in a web part.     - Access problem with default.aspx not in url Playing around on dev box .. someone deleted the virtual server. Then created a new virtual server and recovered portal. All works well if I manually add "default.aspx" to urls .. otherwise, browser forces to a download page. We've checked to see the sharepoint extensions are allowed (they are). Any thoughts? Likely something in IIS? The content and portal are all there, just the access problem.     - Missing in quick launch bar I modified the order of how links show up under "Documents" and "Lists" using FP2003 from the information from http://www.collutions.com/Lists/FAQ/Administration.aspx Q:18.1. My "Documents" sublinks all show fine and in order. But for my "Lists" I see no sublinks. The seem to have disappeared. The only way I can get to them is by clicking on the "Lists" link.     - Add link to Site gives "Error on Page" and new sites dont show up anywhere This has been happening for a while now. Besides the Sharepoint sites created before this started happening, now, any new sites created do not show up under Sites. What happens is, when I am at the page for "Add link to Site", and I fill out the information and click OK, the OK and Cancel buttons grey out and I get "Error on Page".     - requirements to access AD security groups Hi While creating an audience I can either enter a rule regarding an existing user or else a security group in ActiveDirectory. If I create a rule regarding a user, it's required to import users from AD to 'Sharepoint Profile Database' first. Am I right? That was well done, so no problem occurs while adding a user individually to an audience-rule. But when I try to add a whole ActvieDirectory security group following error-message is displayed: 'The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted' So what are requirements to add a whole security group to an audience?     - Audiences with ActiveDirectory I have a group in AD with members. I have added the group as an audience following the steps at the link below. Since it is a group I use Operand: User, Operator: Member Of and enter the domain\group when I create the audience.     - error creating new list items When I create a new list in portal, and then go to add new items to that list, I get an page not found error because the URL displayed in the address bar is incorrect: it displays the path to NewForm.aspx, but then follows this with a Source statement - .........Planner/NewForm.aspx?Source=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ebmsportal......... If I delete everything in the path from the ? onwards, then it works fine, but does anyone know why it is adding this information after the .aspx file anyway?     - Best way to learn how to write custom Web Parts for Sharepoint ... Hi Everyone, I'm finding that working with Sharepoing and truly learning how to customize it is indeed not easy for a seasoned web programmer who's never had experience with Microsoft's method of programming (like me). It looks like I'll need to become proficient in ASP.Net Framework using C# or VB and I've never used either to any extent. I want to learn how to write custom web parts and add features to Sharepoint which aren't there outta the box -- like roll-up calendars, queries to our corporate databases, and more, but coming into the game with only PHP, ColdFusion, and old-school C++ programming (talking DOS days here), this does not help me with Sharepoint. Also though there are some great resources out there to help the newcomer, almost every one expects a certain level of experience that no newcomer (like me) will have. For example, I want to write a new webpart or edit the existing webpart for My Calendar and My Inbox so the OWA and Mailbox are already filled in. I found this website - http://blog.spsclerics.com/archive/2005/11/04/22659.aspx - but for someone who knows zero about programming with ASP.Net or Sharepoint in general, this does zero good. I'm finding MANY resources just like this -- they have great info, but that info is only useable for folks with heavy backgrounds in programming with ASP.Net, C#, VB, or whatever. So the big question... where to begin? Do I lock myself in my office for months learning Visual Studio.Net from books? Do I take some classes? How would the more seasoned programmers suggest a newcomer to Microsoft's methodologies but not new to Web programming in general move forward with this? Also something to note, I'm the only programmer (web or anything) at my work, so I have no mentors to lean on or to bounce questions to.     - Advice on User Management Hi I was looking for some advice from fellow SharePoint users regarding how they manage and provide users access to SharePoint. We are currently running a SharePoint environment with 2 Portal Sites (with Shared Services) and a number of Team Sites and Workspaces within each. Originally we planned to use AD Groups to provide access - however there are some inherent issues with using AD Groups and WSS. For example if you search from Portal it doesn't return results from WSS as WSS can't enumerate the groups etc. At present the portals are available to all users so I can't use the AUTHENTICATED USERS group. We are currently adding users individually to each portal and then to each site to give them access - an administrative nightmare. How do others manage their SharePoint User Management.     - My Calendar web part problem Greetings, This problem is on Windows 2003 Enterprise server with SPS 2K3. I have a user that added the My Calendar web part to his personal My Site. He entered a weird string for his Mail Server Address (www.user_account_name@our_website.com) and it broke his ability to use his My Site. I've tried the standard 'delete his profile and have him recreate it' to no avail. When he recreates the site, he's immediately redirected to http://www.user_account_name@our_website.com/user_name/calendar/?cmd=contents&part=1. When he recreates the site, the same error immediately occurs. Is this something that will have to trolled for in the SQL dbs? If so, can you tell me where and how?     - Sharepoint thru ISA2004 error 403 I've done everything (we'll nearly obviously) to publish SharePoint thru our ISA2004 server. I'm still waiting for the DNS to be published but am using one of our public IPs to test. I know ISA is blocking as I get a 403 error but how? Iâ??ve created a computer set for the SharePoint server with relevant private IP and rule allowing this set to access the internet. Ive edited the web.config file of the SharePoint site to tell it to go out thru the ISAs private nic. I've configured a listener for the ISAs public address and linked that listener to a web publishing rule pointing at the sharepoint server on the LAN. Need some advice please.     - SPS 2003 - Virtual Server List I administer a SPS 2003 medium server farm with a web, index and database server. I have a couple of questions regarding the information that displays on the Virtual Server List in SPS Central Admninistration. One column has the virtual server name which is a link to virtual server administration tasks. In our test environment when I click on this link I get a help screen that shows how to upgrade a server or virtual server. In the far right column is the word UPGRADE. In our production environment when I click on this link it takes me to the Windows SharePoint Services Vitrual Server Administration web page. I don't remember this help page coming up before in our test environment. Is there some event that would trigger this setting to occur on the test virtual server list page. I recently did a reset of the search service in test by removing search and then adding it back to our web front end server. This was to test a workaround from Microsoft to fix content index propogation problems. Would this cause the virtual settings to change?     - Automatize copy in Sharepoint Hello group. I publish reports in a Sharepoint Server periodically and wanted to automate the process, the server is administer by extern company and they do not offer another alternative to me that to raise by means of the navigator or to copy/paste with explorer (using apparently WebDav) The file that I generate monthly I want to let it in a folder with no need drag manually through explorer...     - Strange MySITE Issue We have our SharePoint Portal configured to send notification to the site owners if there is no activity on thier site for a period of time (60 days) and giving them a link to delete thier site if it's no longer needed. This seems to work fine for Sites. The issue arises on the Mysite... Users are getting the emails about thier site not being active. If they click the link to delete the site, it gives them an error stating that they do not have permissions to perform the action. The security on the mysite has them as an administrator ! 1) Do I have to move the mysites to thier own virtual directory to change the email notifications for them (I would prefer the mysites don't send notifications) 2) How can I allow them to delte if they wish to? either of these solutions would work, just need to get past it.     - Need to dynamically show a list of sites in Web Part Here's what I have. I have project sites that users create when they start a new project. They do this through CREATE | SITES AND WORKSPACES and use a template that I created. Currently after creating the site, they have to copy the URL of the site and add that to a Links List Web Part on the home site.     - Word document question related to SPS I have a user that posts a document in an area public to everyone in our company on a SPS. When they go to open it, it prompts for password and should not (we use integrated authentication). When I copy/paste into a new document all the contents, it works fine. So, I think it's related to the template used to create the document? When I check out the properties of the document, the template comes from the user's PRIVATE DOCUMENTS from their My Site.     - One audience is hanging in status "Compiling" I have an audience that is hanging in the status "Compiling" since a scheduled audience compilation a week ago. SharePoint reports the compilation status as "Idle". If I restart the compilation it just exits without any message. Nothing is written to the event log or SharePoint's own logs. I cannot change the hanging audience since SharePoint reports that it is currently compiling. I haven't tried to delete the audience, but I really don't want to do that since it's used throughout the portal. They all are stored in the same ActiveDirectory Security Group. So is it possible to create an audience with the following rule: "User" is "member of" [DOMAIN\security group] (example: TEST\allusers) The selected Security Group (it is a domain local s-group) is stored in a sub-folder. Does it matter? If I do everything like I described there's following error: "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted" But the communication with AD-Box works. When I add a rule by choosing "User" "reports under" [DOMAIN\user] (example: ALSO\michael) adding rule works.     - Alert Over Firing Hi all, Our problem is alert over firing. Problem is not for all portal site, only some document libarys has this problem. Behaviour like below; When someone set a new alert for this document library (alert type:immediate), on first index crawl he get hundreds of alert for each document. All this alerts type is "Discover Alert". After each index crawl same scenario firing , and he get again hundreds of alert . I want to stop this over firing. Have any idea ?     - Can't find config database when using SPS Backup & Restore Tool I am attempting to use the SPS Backup & Restore tool to create a backup of a specific portal running on our production SharePoint server. When I launch the utility I get a message box saying it can't find the config database and that to backup any components I need to add this server to a server farm. This is odd because we currently have 4 portals running on this server with seemingly no problems. Our production SPS server used to have the databases installed locally (single server deployment). A month or two ago I had used the Backup & Restore Utility before to detach the portal databases and move them to a seperate server and then recreated the config database also on that seperate DB server as well. Once that was completed or sometime during that SPS DB migration process I deleted the local SPS config database. Is the backup and restore utility trying to look for the local config database? Since that migration, which was the last time I used the Backup & Restore Utility the following happened to the SPS Server: 1. Windows Server 2003 SP1 was installed 2. SharePoint Services Service Pack 1 was installed 3. SharePoint Portal Server Service Pack 1 was installed 4. SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 was installed I think by Windows Update (as I see it in the Add/Remove Programs utility) Another point of interested is that I did not run the forceupgrade command via the stsadm tool subsequent to the WSS SP2 upgrade. When I view one of the Portal Listings in of the admin screens I see it says the word upgrade next each extended Virtual Server on this machine. Furthermore I discovered that I cannot delete a sub area one of the portals (I haven't tried on any of the others) which I think is related to the WSS SP2 upgrade and not having run the forceupgrade command on via stsadm.     - SBS 2003 issue unable to get into companyweb When I try to get into compnayweb I get a Sing in screen, but when I use Admininstartor to get in it will not let me gives me the login screen several tiome then an error windoe.     - How does Mouseover work? OK...I'm hoping this is an easy one...I have 5 rows of text, for example, let's say row one is dog, row 2 is cat, row 3 is rat, row 4 is snake and row 5 is turtle. When the pointer or cursor rolls over one of these text items, I would like a description of the item to appear in the same text box located on the page. That is, I do not just want a tooltip to appea. Instead, no matter which item in the list the pointer passes over, I want the description to appear in the same place in a box on the page.     - Suggestions for Public and Private areas --- Good Afternoon... We need a public area with simply a Document Library and News for each department, then a Private area with the works. My thought is creating the Public Area as a SubArea (in SPS) and using Team Sites (WSS) as the private areas. Is this a good suggested way of doing this? I'm trying to find the best way to setup each department's site, and though Microsoft tries to explain the setup process in a very long document, I'd like to see examples of the way others have laid out their sites to do this very thing.     - Basic question for NEWS function We will be using 'news' in sharepoint as a single point for posting and then using listing viewers in different areas to view the correct postings. All users can post and most are members. This gives everyone the ability to post but: To edit or delete their own item, they need area management rights? Does anyone know of an appropriate setup to allows users to manage their own postings. Also, we require news to have an expiration to keep the areas clean and up to date. How does the average user (member) get to view expired items if they have been out on vacation. Even granting full access to the News Listing area is not of use since it does not show dates. Are there known issues particular to indexing read-only SharePoint
sites with 3rd party solutions (InfoSeek, FASTSearch)?

We're trying to index documents on a mirror server farm to save
production resources, however we're only hitting web pages and forms
and none of the documents.

We know some of the issues with read-only content
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=894631&FR=1) and confirmed the
account doing the crawling has full access to the sites and documents,
but still no dice :(

Any thoughts? Anyone have experience with read-only sites and 3rd
party indexing?
