    - Metadata missing after drag and drop I have configured picture libraries in 2 WSS sub-sites on different servers. The libraries have a custom column with a choice of values. The default is a calculated value (basically assigning a text value which is not in the choice list). The client machine is running Office 2000. When uploading a number of files via copy and paste in the Explorer view, the default value for the custom column is set in one of the lbraries but not in the other. Both libraries are hosted on Windows 2003 Server, one was created by Project server as a Project site, the other through Sharepoint Portal Server site creation.     - Deleted web.config Hi, I accidently deleted the web.config for SharePoint Portal Server on our test server. To make it work again I copied the web.config from our dev server and that seems to work fine. I just wonder if some information in web.config is machine specific and that can mess up things if you copy web.config from one server to another.     - Searching through Workspace Sites? I appreciate that there is a separate posting board for WSS but the Search facility appears on Portal Server so wasn't sure where to start! Anyway, I am trying to enable the Search facility on Portal Server to search non_portal_content. I have managed to get a crawl working on the non-portal content but am trying to specify certain indexes that have specific URLs. For example, I have set up an Index that searches http://bhintranet:83/sites/IT/*.* but the crawl does not return anything?     - newbie: Forms not showing after publish from Infopath Dear all, I am a newbie so please excuse me if I appear dumb... I have design a form in Infopath with default settings for the submit button etc. I have a single datasource which is a text line bound to a control. I publish the form using the "create new site" option. In my Sharepoint site, under Documents and Lists I can see the new site. When I go to the site and look at modify columns and settings, the template is set to (what I presume is) my new document. When I click the Fill out this form button, the form opens and clicking Submit says this form has been submitted ok, BUT NO FORM ENTRY IS LISTED. Am I misunderstanding the way that forms should be used? I thought each time I hit "fill in this form", I would get a new entry in the list after hitting submit; thus if this was a Service Request Form (for a broken lightbulb or something), there would be a list of the forms currently outstanding. I really, think I am misunderstanding the use of forms and bound data. I assumed that sharepoint would create working tables to store the bound data. Correct? Why do I not get a new entry each time I hit submit (or, in my case, never)? To help you wizards answer this, here is a description of my setup: - Development machine - Win XP Pro, Office 2003, Infopath 2003. Sharepoint server - Windows Server 2003 and latest Sharepoint with all patches applied. To add to (my) confusion if I upload the file, the form seems to appear but unless I choose to update xml AFTER I have submitted the form, then the on-screen value of my text column does not alter. We did this by editing the onet.xml file. The templates work find but when the discussion web part initialises it always comes up in the default view...but we *always* want it in the threaded view.     - Basic Architectural Question- Deployment Planning Just need a a little help. We are at the end of out budget year and are buying SharePoint. Money just came up and dont have much time to research. I have an idea of how we would deploy and were looking for suggestions and opinions. Here goes. We are a company of about 350 employees. We have 6 offices. Users MUST be able to get to their files (Or the better part of their files if the lines go down) I am thinking that we deploy a sharepoint server and SQL in each of the the offices. That way users would always be able to get local accesss to their files. Finally I am thinking that we should be able to setup collaboration between the sharepoint servers in each of our offices in order to support collaboration among offices. Is this a good way to go?     - Using ADAM with SPS We're developing a new SPS project as a central point-of-contact for the KM/DM + for our Firm. Being new to SPS/WSS we're thinking that it would be great to use AD for our authentication, and white pages, and use the more flexible/isolated ADAM schema approach for defining roles for Authorization, Audiences and Security Groups (We really don't want to modify the AD schema - especially during planning/development/prototyping). Unfortunately, from what I've read, SPS 2003 is not able to integrate with ADAM. Can anyone tell me if this integration issue is addressed in Windows Server 2003 (R2)??? If so - I'll download and install the R2 Beta and hope that Microsoft can deliver the RC be year-end 2005; otherwise we're going to need to rethink our path forward on the project. Thanks!     - Sharepoint and NTLM authentication problem Hi, We have an SPS 2003 server with a number of portals configured with a single parent and a number of child portals. All of the workstations I use are set up with Win XP and have *.company.com in the trusted sites zone. With several of my workstations I can log into all portals with no problem. However, with other workstations I get the dreaded credentials dialog for login and password. I've verified that the IE settings are the same for all workstations, cleared the cookies and cache but still can't get to some sites without entering credentials. What is perplexing is that some portals work while others don't from the same workstation. I would think that if NTLM wasn't working it would fail for all portals.     - Search result refresh I've created a file share content source, ran a full update on the source and carried out a search. Things ran as expected w/ a document showing up in search results. However, I deleted a searched file from the file shared content source, again ran a full update, then re-executed the search. I was expecting the previously searched file to not show up, but it did.     - Moving Sharepoint to a new server. I have searched the forum here and have so far not found a solution to my problem. I'm looking to move sharepoint from one server to another. It was installed by my predecessor so I dont know exactly how it was installed. The existing server is being de-commisioned and we now need to move the data to the new server. From what i can work out, sharepoint services has been installed on a server running Windows server 2003. Within IIS on this server, the default website points to sharepoint. But the files are not in SQL but appear to be stored locally in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server". (is there any way I can verify this??) My first question is can the files be moved/migrated into SQL some how? Then, how do I install sharepoint on to a new server, but have it pointing at the SQL database?     - Data view problems in FP 2003 Im trying to build a standard left menu webpart in frontpage 2003. The menu is meant to be data driven so I can add it to portal and wss pages and configure it by changing a file that is on disk. I am using the data view in FP 2003. I tried using XML but i do not want to copy the XML file to "my website" as it says I must. I would rather have an XML, text or MSAaccess file on disk and have it read that instead. I tried using the configure OLEDB connection string option to do this but after a lot of trying, I have been unable to. I have been using the connection string (and variations) like: Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=c:\txtFilesFolder\;Extended Properties="text;HDR=Yes;FMT=Delimited" (this for a text file). but I cannot get any connection string to work. Message is: The web server cannot connect to specified data source because the query string might contain errors ... and so forth. The Data retrieval services are ON in central administration. The XML-copy-to-my-website option works. I CAN connect to my local SQLServer and access a db/table there. Both these solutions are inflelxible if I want to use the web part anywhere (ie hardcoded server names, etc). Any suggestions as to how I can accomplicsh the goal of creating a common left menu web part (without coding in .NET) that can be used on all pages in SPS and WSS and can be configured by editting a disk based file (ie XML, text, MDB, etc).     - working with documents Hello, I have a WSS site that contains two document libraries, each with its own template. There is document approval set up. Now when each user create a document from template, they fill the template and save the document to a library. But this means that no-one is able to edit this document before approval. They simply don't see it. Is that right? Now because I really need this feature, I realized that document workspaces might be the thing that would help me. Am I right? If so, what is the best practice to implement them? And if not, is there a solution? At short - I need this: 1) any member of the site create a document from template 2) any other member can edit the document until they finally check the "done" checkbox (I created that) 3) when "done" is checked, the manager reviews it for approval 4) if the document is approved, no-one is able to edit it Please help, it's getting urgent...     - priority columns in document library Hi folks, The users I support for sharepoint have requested that they be able to put certain files in a document library above other files - ie, things that people frequently access shouldn't have to be scrolled for. Makes sense, right? So I, thinking I was pretty clever (though still reasonably new to Sharepoint) said to myself "aha! The best way to do this is to add a column ('priority'), order by that column (higher priority comes first) and voila, don't display that column in the default view and voila, frequently used items at the top" Now this worked fine until I realised that many of the 'files' in the document library that they wanted to sort were not files but in fact 'folders'... now I'm still not quite clear on how it all works, but it seems the gist of it is that I can't set values for custom folders in a document library. So I've hunted around the newsgroups and one suggestion I saw was to use fields and views instead of folders - a logical folder would then just be to select a view which filters on a different field value. Eg, filter on field 'dept' where dept='service' or somesuch. Now, this MIGHT work if I was setting the system up from scratch, but the person in charge of populating the initial document libraries has already gone through and created quite a sizable windows-like file hierarchy (with multiple levels), which would take a helluva long time to restructure. So, does anyone know of an easier way of doing this? The best I can think of at the moment is simply to prepend non-alphanumeric characters to the front of folder names, as this seems to be the only field I can edit. This would mean that the folder named "_Frequently Used Forms" would come before the "Administration Files" folder... but that's ugly, and I like doing things with style. If I create a folder with the name ABC_FILE the folder that's created is named ABC_FILE_ notice an underscore character has been appended to the folder name.     - Restored to New server and cannot logon to STS_Config I am running SBS2003. We needed to change to a new physical server. We use sharepoint services to provide a "compayweb" site I have restored both the STS_Config and STS_servername_1 databases to a new server. When I try to either connect to or administer the site I get an error in opening the config database. in share point central administration under "Set Configuration Database Server" I attempt to set the configuration database to "STS_Config" using database server "servername\SharePoint" I get the following message: Cannot open database requested in login 'STS_Config'.     - Permissions Problems HELP I'm using WSS and have created a top level site and multiple sub-sites. When I create a document library and I want to add users or site groups to the DL I get a generic set of permissions. It starts out at View then goes to View, Add, Edit, Delete. How can I add users and have them edit but not delete. I'm deathly affraid that users may intentionally or unintentionally delete a document that should not be deleted. I know I can go into Site Groups and create an Edit_No_Delete group and add the users into there. But when I try to add the group to the DL I still only get the defaults. I have to inherit permissions then remove the ones I don't want. Then if I have a user that needs access to this one DL but not all the others the Edit_No_Delete group can get to I have to do it all over again for this one user!!! What a collossal waste of time. Is there an easier way to do this? BTW: I do have Portal Server 2003 installed. But I've had absolutely no training in it and it confuses the hell out of me. All my boss wants is to have the department broken into: Department -> Division 1, Division2: Division 1 -> Team 1, Team 2, Team 3...: Division 2 -> Group 1, Group 2... He wants each Division/Team/Group to have it's own site with specific Document Libraries. However the DLs in the Department and Division Sites must have specific sets of permissions based on the user. Please help. If I can't get this working properly, this project is gonna bust. And I KNOW that SPS and WSS are going to be really beneficioal to the Deaprtment.     - Sharepoint document indexing and searching problem We have a SharePoint site that is running great. We have been unable to search, however through documents that have been added to the site. We have .doc and .pdf files that we want to search through. I have followed the iFilter steps outlined in TechNet and I think I've done all that properly. However, when I go to re-crawl the site under "Configure Search and Indexing" The Topic Assistant status reads: "There were not enough keywords in the sample documents to train the Topic Assistant. Try again when more sample documents are available." I'm thinking I missed a step. When trying to train the Topic Assistant, it also reads an error that "Access is denied." The default content access account is the Domain Administrator account so I'm not sure where the problem is. Where can I start to help this problem??     - Problems with saving a file back to its source location Hi, I have a user who when checking out a document and making changes to that document has problems with saving the document back to its source location. The normal process is checkout, make a change, save and the user is automatically promted to save the document back to its source location and then its checked back in, in the process updating the Version History. However this particular user can check out the document, make the changes but when the user tries to save and check back in it automatically tries to save to MY Computer and looses its source location. This happens on Word, Excel and al Office files. Hi, I have quite a strange problem. We have a server with SPS 2003 and SP1
installed. We have created a portal as well as a bunch of wss sites. It has
run without problems for a couple of months, but recently I wanted to
adminster the virtual server settings.

I clicked the Site settings link on the portal, then Go to SPS Central Admin
> Windows Sharepoint Services > Configure virtual server settings. Here I get
a list of all virtual servers and the installed versions of WSS, and the
strange thing is that it says Not installed on all virtual servers! So I
can't configure the vs but I know it is installed (because I installed it)
and we are running SPS and WSS on that box, without other problems.

Does someone have an explanation to what could have caused this and/or how
to fix it?

Haven't found the fix yet, but here's a workaround. Go to the following URL
to get to the Configure virtual server settings page:

http://localhost:<your_port_number>/vsgeneralsettings.aspx?VirtualServer=http%3a%2f%2f<your_server_name>%2f

Replace <your_port_number> and <your_server_name> with the correct values.
