I want to install the report pack for SPS, but I am a little unsure
about the install process. I have a single SPS box (web, index,
search) and a single SQL box. Exactly what do I need to install for
the report pack to work... and on which server?

The system requirements state that you need the following, but they do
not clarify on which server(s).

Server OS
SPS 2003
SQL Server with dbSPSReportStaging and dbSPSReporting installed
SQL Reporting Services
Visual Studio .NET
LogParser

Does all of this need to be installed prior to the packs and on which
server(s)?

When I attempted to install the packs on my SQL server which already
has SQL Report Server installed, during the install it says that to
"Deploy Report Solution" it needs Visual Studio and to "Install Data
Extraction Program" it needs SPS. Does this mean that I should be
installing the packs on my SPS box? If so, that would mean that I
would also need to install SQL Server and the reporting services on it
also.

These instructions seem a bit "fuzzy" to me at best. Can anyone give
me the proper install order and on which server, etc?

Thanks for any help!

Well, I have tried to install the Report Pack on my SQL box (even
though the dialog box stated that I needed Visual Studio and SPS) and I
got an error that said "Object reference not set to an instance of an
object"... good grief. Somebody please enlighten me on what I need
to do in order to use these packs.

Why is everything with SPS end up being so difficult? Somebody please
help get this installed as I really want to check search usage, etc.

Thanks.

Ok you MVP's, time to earn your stripes :)

I have been unable to find any further information regarding the install
process.

I suspect there should be some help there, and you could have done that
yourself in the time you waited for messages in the newsgroup. Actually,
you should have done that first.

If none of the SPS MVP's have used that report pack, they can't really make
a definitive response; any more than I can.

Good grief, what is it with you MVP's lately? Yes, I already looked
through those. If you read all of my posts you would see that I have
already been attempting to get this thing installed. What I need is
some further help that will clarify exactly how to install the packs.
Your advice puts me back to square 1, when I am already on square 9.

Lastly, shouldn't the "MVP's" be some of the first people to be
using this thing?

Has anybody out there got the report packs to work? If so, please
chime in.

Thanks.

Hi David,
I was able to get the report pack working, but I have a single-server
deployment, with SP 2003 and SQL 2000 on the same box. I don't have Visual
Studio installed on the server. I installed all the other reporting stuff
(parser, reporting services, etc) on the server without incident.

Another problem you'll run into is that there are bugs in the reporting
server database schema, which can be resolved by using this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906508

Good luck,
-- Joe
