When installing commerically available ifilters (pdf, dwg, msg, mp3, etc) in
a SPS 2003 environment with two search servers and one index server, do the
ifilters need to be installed on both search servers AND the index server?

Thanks

If you want the iFilter to break documents and expose them in WSS, then you
will need to install the iFilter on the SQL box. If you want SPS to use the
iFilter, then just install it on the Index box.

Nige.

Hello Nigel,

We have an installation of SPS 2003 with portal, index and search in a
single box and SQL server on another box. I have installed the IFilter for
PDF on the web server according to the KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;832809. However the
PDF icons do not show up on the search results/in the document libraries.
Could you please help?

Thanks
Ashok

Just posted this on another thread with the same topic: the following info
came straight from Microsoft PSS (details of the steps are
noted in KB 832809):
--Any box that hosts the JOB or INDEX roles for your SPS farm needs the
iFilter, and any SQL boxes serving your SPS farm need the iFilter (SQL does
the WSS indexing).
--Any box hosting the WEB role for your SPS farm (and thus acting as a Web
Front End) needs to have the PDF (or other) GIF file (typically "pdf16.gif")
and the
companion change in the "docicon.xml" file.
--If a box is hosting ONLY the SEARCH role for your SPS farm, it doesn't
need any changes.

Based on your your server farm configuration, and which boxes host which SPS
roles, the above should tell you what needs to be installed where!
HTH.
