Is it possible to hide/show subareas to certain people or groups according to
there AD name?

Absolutely. You need to setup and create Audiences. You can then target
specific content based on this. Audience membership can be based on AD
group. This is detailed in the Administrators Guide.

I don't believe audiences work this way. You can target content within a
subarea using audiences, but to conditionally show or hide areas themselves
you need to use security groups, as found under the "Manage Security" action
link.

None of this works... Whatever I do, I cant hide the subarea... from 'Manage
Security' only one group of users has 'View Area' rights. Everyone else is
deleted, and there is no inheritance from SPS-mainsite.

I have tried with Audiences with same bad result.
