This technet article describes the maximum file size that
SPS 2003 can crawl:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/office/sps200
3/maintain/maxdocsz.mspx

I am receiving a warning in the gatherer logs because a
file is larger than the 16 MB that MaxDownloadSize is
currently set to.

Has anyone modified the registry value to increase the
max size? Are there any repercussions from doing this
(performance, etc).

Thanks,
Erik Johnson

Yes, I have modified it. I have needed to in order to index WMV files > 16
MB (with an approprate IFilter of course). have had no problems or
reprocussions from raising it to 500MB. However, large documents may take
longer to crawl (obviously since it is requesting more chunks), but no
blatent performance loss.
