The error occured something like this: The audience cannot be compiled,
because the account used to compile audiences does not have the proper

Solution: Add/Remove Programs -> WSS -> Detect and Repair Errors

Port change from 80 to another under SPS 2003
Hi,
Is there any way to make SPS 2003 work with another port except 80 or

2003 first and reinstall it? Or, can I duplicate IIS virtual site

and port?
Thanks for any advice,

Can anyone help me out please? Early on in investigating
sharepoint I deleted the 'sites' page from the portal. I
still have sites sitting under that 'sites' page but I

anyone suggest how I get it back? I don't suppose I can

REPOST: SPSv2 Performance Issue
I have one SPSv2 server with SQL Server in the same
machine. However, it seems that the performance is not
good. My box has 2 2.4G CPU and 4GB RAM. Will the problems
be related to Lists? I have many lists in the portal site.
Any ideas on how can I evaluate its performance? How to
improve it?

Problem with lists in our portal
Hi folks,
When I got to work this morning there was a message from one of the
users that the web-part gallery had a lot less items in it that
normal. As I investigated, I have found the following ;
At the root level of the SPS site, tyring to use the "Manage Content"
link returns "The area does not exist" and "Error - Cannot complete
this action"
At any level, using the "Create" link returns the same error as above
- though existing lists and document libraries content seem to appear
at non-root level.
Using FP2003 I can access the Document Library in the root and add or
browse existing content.
Using FP2003 I can access the lists folder inthe root, but adding a
list returns "Cannot complete this action" and trying to open an
existing list (which I can see) returns "The list that is referenced
no longer exists"
FWIW - all the webparts are sitting happily in the file system but,
I'm guessing that they aren't appearing because of the lack of lists.
Using Enterprise Manager, all the various IDs and things seem to be
correct.
Unless some halfwit has been tinkering with things at the weekend,
nothing - that I'm aware of - has changed since everything was working
fine and dandy last week. There's nothing incriminating in the Event
Log and the server hasn't been rebooted.
I'd be really grateful if anyone had an idea as to what has happened
to our portal.
Many thanks,

why should i go for Sharepoint Portal Server?
Hello All!
I'm still at the decision making stage, and have not yet decided if i need
Portal Server or not. I've read the white paper, but i'm still unclear, as
there were a few things it didn't mention.
From what i've gathered, you need portal server to use the outlook inbox
web part. Is this the case, or did i just pick it up wrong?
Also, what about if i have a file server? Can i create a document list
where the files are on the existing file server, and don't have to be copied
from the sharepoint server? If so, can i do it in WSS? or do i need SPS? (My
sharepoint server will exist on a different PC.)
Thanks in advance!

changing sharepoint portal server website url for external users
The problem is that our intranet websites on sharepont portal server are being accessed from outside as well, and the url that they access is global that is lets say "http://portal.company.com" while the one being accessed from inside is "http://portal". but when any website is created or it is modified the mail that is generated to the people outside the portal contains the intranet website address like "http://protal/sites/project_server/" while what it should show is "http://portal.xavor.com/sites/project_server/". Intranet/ External URL configuration
We have a number of sharepoint 2003 sites on our servers all on different ports. The problem is we are trying to give them friendly URLs but this is not working correctly.
the normal urls are http://server:16002/ http://server:16003/ http://server:16004/ i want them to be accessible internally by using the urls http://intranet.company.com http://clients.company.com and http://archive.company.co
I cant see a way to add the urls as a CNAME in the DNS server, and am unable to add a new host as the 'server' already has an entry in DNS
Do we have to do anything else to configure the site so the URL's work correctly? We run an isa server, however as the urls are meant to resolve to internal IP's they should not try to access them through the isa server as we have bypassed the proxy for local addresses. Repost - no delete rights
Have a bit of a problem. I thought I was being really
clever in taking off all users delete rights so they
can't accidently delete anything (because as you know
there is no undo delete). What I was then going to do is
get users to change the name of the document to 'To Be
Deleted' and then I would search for and delete all those
documents say once a week.
Problem is that when you take delete rights on the sites
off users - you also take off rename rights for some
reason so actually they can't rename files or even to
move the file to a folder called 'To be deleted'
Is there any way to stop people from deleting documents
but still allow them to change the name or to move a
document?
Any ideas - please!!!!!!

Storage Capacity Planning
Okay, I read through: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/office/sps2003/plan/cappisps.msp
This article said that to plan for storage you need to plan
Database Server: 200% of the size of all documents stored on the portal sit
Index Server: 50% of the total size of all documents indexed in the indexes on that serve
Search Server: 100% of the total size of all the documents indexe
Looking at the above sizing requirements, if I deployed a medium server farm with 2 search server, 1 index server, and 1 Database server - I would be storing a file 4.5 times between all 5 servers, what a waste of space
Am I reading this right, or do the index and search servers actually store less data. Tag: duplicate records displaying in returned search results Tag: 40366

WSS search from portal
I know, there have been a lot of articles on this, but haven't found the solution on this. The situation is as follows
My Portal Search works fine, no problem with that. But I also created WSS sites, under http://servername/sites/ . Now I also want to search these sites from my portal. But the sites-content is not in the search result. I haven't added the sites to the Site Directory though, is this necessary? Does this mean I need to add every new site to this Site Directory. What I have tried
- Proxy settings are ok, read something about that issue but this is fine
- When I do a full catalogue text search in SQL Server on the _Site-database I get about 600 results and 1 MB so looks good too
- I enabled WSS search results
- When I search on a WSS site within that site, I get results
- The Site Directory is something else then /sites/, how can I include this and all the subsites
I would really appreciate this, this is the last thing I have to configure before going live. Thanks! Tag: duplicate records displaying in returned search results Tag: 40362

Searching WSS Document Libraries
Hi All,
I have an application that uses SharePoint Portal Server to index a
Windows SharePoint Services site document library. I have created an
Exchange [is this correct???] content source to point at the document
library URL:
Sts2://caajuris01:8081/JURIS_Dev/webid=000/listid={408180C6-6DA5-437C-8635-C869A19D3CA5}
I have a total 42 documents in the library. I have also created a
custom content index, that is solely responsible for containing this
content source. Now, when I start the custom index, it indicates that
there are a total of 43 documents in the index, but when i carry out a
search, nothing is ever returned.
The other wierd thing is that when the library is crawled, the
document properties are correctly identified and stored in Portal
Server. But when I examine the properties, I get the message "No
documents with this property were found" in the Content Using this
Property section.
Does anyone have any good pointers on resources that show how to
correctly index a document library in Windows SharePoint Services?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

error: failed to initialize content sources
Hi there,
I have created a new virtual server, created a new portal site in that.
After deleting the new portal, search wasn't working anymore.
App-Log said to try to remount the index. If not possible, delete it to
automatically create an new one. Site Settings-Configure Search & indexing
only displayed something like "try to remount index or delete it".
I did that manually by deleting the folder with the index, because I could
not do so via the web page.
Now:
App-Log: "An exception occured in the search synchronizer"
When trying to configure search & indexing through Site Settings, I now have
all the menus there, but with error "failed to initialize content sources".
I cannot add / delete content sources.
Trying to restore an index from backup fails with "The server threw an
exception".
When trying to use catutil (after stopping the sharepointpssearch service)
to verify the index, I get
"Checking integrity of the existing database...
Attempt to open database failed:'JET_errFileNotFound, File not found'
Ensure that search service is stopped."
Everything else seems to work fine, but I cannot do any searches.
I'm out of ideas. Maybe anyone has a clue?

only the new version of the document goes to pending.
What I am noticing is that the previous version of the

Is there a way to work around this so that a new version

Creating a Document WorkSpace
Hello everybody,
I am having trouble with this particular feature (Creating a Document
Workspace) in SPS 2003. When a user, who has rights to a site as a reader
and a contributor uploads a document to a library where he has privlages as
a contributor again, the document appears under the "My Submissions" option
of the navigation bar. The current status of the document is "Pending". In
"My Submissions", there are lots of options provided, one of which is
"Create a Document Workspace". When that option is selected...an error
appears, stating "Value does not fall within range"!!. But, if the document
is approved by a user who has administrative privlages, the same option
(Create a document workspace) works!! I dont have a complete hang of this
feature in SharePoint. Could anybody please explain how it is supposed to
work?
Ideally I would think the contributor would want to share the document with
some other contributors of the library before the document is actually
published. This means, Creating a Document Workspace should be a feature
that should be available when the status of the document is "Pending" too.?
Any thoughts or ideas here??? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sharepoint Configuration Analyzer error result - Static IP is a Problem?
Hi. Looking further into my failure to add a ratethispage web part or export a web part lead me to install and run the Sharepoint Configuration Analyzer. I would recommend this to anyone having SPS issues as a first step
Anyhow, the only error I get when I generate a report is 'A virtual server is bound to a static IP address. This is not supported in WIndows Sharepoint Service.
What I did previously was create a second virtual server and map the same content (i.e. the same portal content) to this virtual server to allow myself basic authentication on that one and the usual integrated authentication on the original portal site - to allow, of course, intranet and extranet access over the internet to the same portal
I have allocated a fixed IP to both virtual servers. However, the only one mentioned in the error log is the IP and Port of the original virtual web site (the default web site) I used when I set the portal up for the first time
Would changing this to 'use all unassigned' IPs in IIS get rid of this error, and would this then allow me to sucessfully export web parts, and also not get the following error message when trying to browse the 'virtual server' web part gallery in the 'design web page' bit of sharepoint
An unexpected error has occurred.
Web Parts Maintenance Page: If you have permission, you can use this page to temporarily disable Web Parts or remove personal settings. For more information, contact your site administrato
On another issue, I hace succesfully and quite easily done a complete restore of the portal to another server using nothing more than Veritas SQL backup Agent and the sql restore fuctionality. Event ID 2262 and event ID 1000 occur, and users
experience search problems in SharePoint Portal Server
2003
I did a search in microsoft site and it says:
To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft
Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. Tag: duplicate records displaying in returned search results Tag: 40256
We are using SP2001. All searches result in duplicate
records displayed. All SPs applied/reboots do not
resolve. Any idea why?
