Error restoring to new server
I'm trying to migrate SPS 2003 to new hardware using spsbackup.exe.
The new server has a clean SPS install with SQL Server Standard Edition.
When restoring spsbackup gives the following error messasge:
"ERROR: Exception of type
Microsoft.SharePoint.Portal.Install.DuplicateDirectoryException
was thrown"
The databases seem to have been restored and there are no errors in the
Windows Event Viewer.
Can anyone shed any light on this message?
Some other information:
The old server had SQL Server Desktop Engine. Would this cause a problem?
The new server has a new domain name but I guess the restore process is
supposed to take care of that (?). Tag: Log off button Tag: 66831
Migrating from WSS to SPS
Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone has any experience of migrating from WSS SP1 (got
lots of sites already configured) to SPS2003 SP1.
Can I just install SPS on top of WSS? - Will it keep my sites intact?
Obviously I'm going to do this on a test platform, I was wondering if there
is anyone who could give me some advice/tips before I start my testing?
Thanks in advance.

Manage users from AD
Hi
I am using SPS and WSS, I have team websites that I wish to import user
groups from AD rather than granting the access to these sites by adding
individual user name.
These sites contain sub sites that wont inherit the same permission as
the parent sites. My intention is, after granting all the users to
access the sites, I would like to create Cross Site groups that I could
choose to grant for different subsites.
Do you think my approach is correct? I am a newbie and everyday I found
something new to learn on both SPS and WSS.
Could you suggest how to
1. Import users from AD to 'Manage uers' area in WSS
2. Create Cross Site groups to grant a group per sub site
Thank you very much for any of you advice. Looking forward to your
reply

Local Security Authority cannot be contacted
I have seen posts with similar problems, but not specifically the same error
I am having.
My sharpoint website fires up with no problems, and anonymous users can view
the public pages, however when domain users try to log in (using the Active
Directory user ID and password), they get "500 - Internal Server Error."
Which I
found is because of an error of, "The Local Security Authority cannot be
contacted."
After some more detailed testing, I discovered that any "domain user" that
logs in gets that error. However, if one of the administrators logs in, they
have no problems. The portal server works great for them.
Not sure if there is some correlation there or not, but thought I would
mention that. I am running Windows Portal Server 2003 on a Windows 2003
Server. I noticed this problem starting today, and I assume it was due to my
updates from last night.
Has anyone seen similar problems and maybe can give me some insite?
Much thanks. Tag: Log off button Tag: 66814

How to connect web part/list with Active Directory?

What is the steps to set up a web part (for example, announcement or list)

Different files, different permissions? Is it possible?
Hi there,
I am just starting with SharePoint Server, so my question may sound a
bit silly for most of you.
I will need to share one big, master file (excel spreadsheet or maybe
an access file) with references to the separate vision files:
Example (columns)
territory0/problem1/file1
territory0/problem2/file1
territory0/problem3/file2
territory1/problem1/file3
territory1/problem2/file4
[...]
Then, I would like to assign a modify permission to the person
responsible for territory0 to modify a visio files (file1 and2) and
read (file3 and 4) (etc.)
Additionally, I would like to have a possibility to track users'
activity. I mean, it would be great if I can list all changes done by
the user after specific date. I'll be in a heaven if I would be able
to approve changes after each modification. Is it possible to do that
with SharePointServer?
Thanks a lot,

Single document backup and restore for SharePoint Portal 2003
Hi,
I'm currently on a project where I need to come up with a solution to
have a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal backed up so that easy
restore of a single documents is possible.
There are custom backup solutions on the market. AvePoint DocAve and
CommVault Galaxy are some of the solutions. For Veritas a backup client
has been developed to integrate to Veritas.
The backup system used in this case is Tivoli Storage Manager. Options
would be to buy one of the mentioned SPS backup applications or to
develop a tool to extract all updated documents nightly to a file
system folder and let Tivoli back this folder up, but this might not be
the best solution.
Does anyone have any experience with one of the backup solutions for
SPS2003 or a good solution to this problem?
Kind regards

What permission needed to edit portal site in Front Page 2003?
Hi, everyone,
I open site created in sharepoint portal server in Front Page 2003 by
providing the portal site home page Url. The whole site opens and I can see
the folders for each area (default and created). However, when I try to
click the â??default.aspxâ?? in the top level and the â??default.aspxâ?? in each sub
folder, I get message that I donâ??t have permission. So what permission do I
need and how I get this?
The SP portal server 2003 and FP2003 are installed on the same machine. SQL
server is on another machine. I am the local Admin to the portal machine.
My domain account is in the Admin group of the portal site. And I am the
owner of the portal site. So why donâ??t I have the permission?

Template loaded two times from Sharepoint
Sorry for the cross-post, but I don't know exactly where my problem
lies...
Here's the setup:
- I have a document [A] in SharePoint Portal Server. This document is
based on a template [B] which is saved locally, on my computer.
- I have a template [C] in the user's Word STARTUP folder. (Add-in that
get loaded when Word is started by the current user)
- I also have a template [D] in Office's STARTUP folder. (Add-in always
loaded by Word, for every user)
The problem seems to come from the fact that the document's template
[B] refers to template [D].
If I click on the document [A] in SharePoint Portal Server (http://),
the template [D] in Office's startup folder is loaded 2 times - i.e.
it's AutoExec procedure run two times.
In the AutoExec procedure I added code to display all the addins
currently in memory (from the AddIns Collection). The first time
AutoExec runs, only Office's template [D] is present (probably because
of it's reference from [B]); the second time both addins [C & D] are
present.
If I double-click on the same Word document saved locally on my
computer, everything is loaded correctly - i.e. AutoExec is executed
only one time.
Since the Office's template [D] has toolbar customization (saved in the
template, not coded in VBA), I end up with two 'New' buttons both of
which have their content double-up as well...
Is there a way to prevent this?
Am I making sense?
Anybody know what I'm talking about?
Thanks

FYI - Exception in BackupSQL: Source=SQLBkMgd, Message=There is not

If you get this error message, chances are that it is all bull. We have
a small server farm configuration, SharePoint was invoking the backup
however after generating 2 files on sharePoint, SQL failed to generate
the remaining 3 backup files with the above error message. Data was
being written to SAN and SAN had plenty of space so where was the
problem????
When we went to the SQL box, it threw a delayed write error too. Our
network guy changed the link & duplex setting on the network card to
100MB/s and full duplex on both SQL and SharePoint server
and voila BACKUP Works again. It was on auto detect before.

REfusc connection with non IE browsers

Is this a possibility?

users seeing shared workspace upon entering the portal
there doesn't appear to be any simple way that a user who has been added to

the question of the day here is can I load WSS SP2 and then SPS SP1? or will
SPS SP1 now choke because WSS SP2 is on the box?
Alternatively, is there somewhere to download WSS SP1?

"File not found" and "The area does not exist" issues after copying portal site to new server
I copied a portal site to a new server, following the instructions at

, which describe how to back up the *_SITE, *_PROF and *_SERV databases
of a portal site and restore them in a portal site on a new server. It
seemed like all went well. All the documents in the portal site are
there, and can be accessed. But when I try to access the Manage Content
page of any of the areas, I get a "File not found" error on the page,
with "The area does not exist" appearing in the nav bar at the top of
the page instead of the links. (The areas do indeed seem to exist,
since clicking on the Manage Content link in any of them is what causes
the error message to appear.) It seems the issue is caused by the
presence of a Links list in one of the areas. How can I copy the Links
list from the old server to the new server and get the new copy of the
portal site working, assuming this is the cause of the error?

Integration of Contact lists
Hi,
I'm currently looking at SharePoint Portal Server to hopefully provide
integration of Contact lists from MS CRM 1.2, a MS Exchange 2003 Public
Folder and contacts within a SharePoint site itself.
We currently have a list of company contacts in a shared Public Folder on
our Exchange 2003 server. This works well, allowing everyone to see the
shared contacts in Outlook and update/create as permissions allow. We plan to
implement MS CRM 1.2 in the near future which I would believe have a seperate
list of contacts.
So, can SPS, CRM and Exchange all share a central contacts list? or do I
have to duplicate up my lists?
