SPS2003 Cross Domain Authentication
Hi all,
I have a current SPS2003 installation in Domain A. If I introduce a new
Domain B with a two way trust between domains can I have users from Domain B
access the SharePoint installation/portal on the servers residing in Domain A?
Any guidance or advice much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Incoming E-mail configuration - what permissions are required for
Hello all,
I have a MOSS 2007 SP1 (x64) server running on Windows 2008 Enterprise
(x64).
The system is configured using the Microsoft best practices for MOSS,
which use the concept of "least privilege," creating several domain
accounts that have only standard user rights plus whatever MOSS auto-
assigns to them.
I have been fighting with the incoming e-mail stuff for a week. I'm
aware of the whitepaper from "CombinedKnowledge" - I followed it
closely, but continued to have problems. Here's a layout of the
environment.
SQL 2000 SP4 on a two node Cluster (has to be SQL 2000 due to other
app requirements)
SHGMOSS1 - single MOSS 2007 Enterprise server, all services are
currently running here.
Domain is SHG and all accounts listed below are in that domain as
normal users.
Accounts used for MOSS:
svcMOSS - Main farm account, Central Admin app pool and DB access
svcMOSS_SSP - Shared Service Provider (SharedServices1) account
svcMOSS_Index - DB index / search account
svcMOSS_ca - content access account for indexer
svcMOSS_ap1 - App Pool 1 account (app pool for SharedServices1)
svcMOSS_ap2 - App pool 2 account (app pool for MySites)
While trying to mail-enable a collection, I kept getting "Access
denied" and "Error in application" type errors when it was trying to
create the contact in Active Directory. My DirMan config looks like
so:
OU=SharePoint,DC=ourcompany,DC=local
The OU "SharePoint" exists in the root of the domain, and
"ourcompany.local" (obviously changed) is the FQDN for the domain.
The documentation is NOT clear on what accounts need access to the
OU. The CombinedKnowledge whitepaper implies that only the Central
Admin account has to be able to modify the OU but I have eventually
found this to be FALSE. Out of frustration, I eventually gave *all*
of the accounts listed above Full Access to the OU (and all child
objects). I was still getting Access Denied and/or generic Errors. I
haven't even bothered to setup the SMTP portion of things because the
process is failing before it gets that far - the contact isn't being
created in Active Directory.
Note that all accounts are in the appropriate WSS_WPG and
WSS_Admin_WPG groups on the local machine - I followed the normal
setup procedure and allowed the system to do what it wanted when I
chose the accounts.
What finally "fixed" the problem - I had to make the App Pool account
for any App Pool that I want to e-mail enable a LOCAL Administrator on
the MOSS server. This makes NO sense to me - why would I need local
Admin for a domain operation? Also, I had the exact same problem when
using "least privilege" accounts on Windows 2003 R2 SP2, so this is
not anything Server 2008 specific. I have been using Process Monitor
to figure out what is failing for a normal user account but i'm not
getting any access denied or failure messages, so I'm not sure why the
App Pool accounts have to be Local Administrators for the contact
creation to work.
So, I have things "working" but in a sub-optimal way due to the lack
of security. Microsoft's documented practices don't work here, and
there's no explanation as to why. Event Logs and the MOSS logs
haven't helped me yet. Can someone point out what security options I
might need to get this to work without Administrator rights? Tag: ¹ØÓÚWSS3.0ËÑË÷ADÕÊ»§ Tag: 99699

Excel Services refresh failure
I have a Excel workbook stored in a MOSS trusted report library using an odc
connection from a trusted data connections library that pulls data into a
pivot table from an Analysis Services cube. The connection to the cube has
to be made through the http olap pump because our internal network is such a
patchwork that our users do not authenticate to any microsoft network, much
less the one the SSAS server authenticates to. There are also firewalls
between some segments of our network and the server that make it even more
necessary to use http authentication. The data is not particularly
sensitive, so anonymous users just authenticate as IUSER_Servername and that
local account has been given the appropriate rights to access the cube.
In the web part I need to have a default value sent to the date parameter to
get today's data on opening.
When the workbook is opened through Excel locally or through the Sharepoint
library using the "Edit in Excel" command it works fine. When it is
displayed in a Excel Services web part the refresh fails, and when it is
accessed using the "View in Web Browser" command the refresh fails. The
failure message returns very quickly and says:
Data Refresh Failed
Unable to retrieve external data for the following connections:
MyconnectionFileName
The data sources may be unreachable, may not be responding, or may have
denied you access.
Verify that data refresh is enabled for the trusted file location and that
the workbook data authentication is correctly set.
I have a KPI list based on that same connection that works fine, although it
takes several seconds to populate the data so I do not believe the problem
is related to security, firewalls, or anything else except something unique
to Excel Services.
I am not a SharePoint Admin- that is outsourced to a contractor so when I
want a configuration change I have to submit a request stating exactly the
settings I want, then wait for them to make the change- it can easily take a
week or more to get the changes made. I believe I am the only one that has
started using Excel Services on our SharePoint site as it was not configured
until I requested that it be done, and the settings I requested were these:
Please insure that the following configuration is set for the trusted file
location "my stuff address"
1. Trust Children = yes
2. Under the External Data section set Allow External Data to
Trusted data connection libraries only, or Trusted data connection libraries
and embedded (embedded is preferred- but would live with tdc library.)
3. Warn on refresh = no
4. User defined functions = yes
I have found no similar issues on my searches of the internet, and I am out
of ideas. Can you suggest other settings that may need to be made to get
the functionality to work as desired? Tag: ¹ØÓÚWSS3.0ËÑË÷ADÕÊ»§ Tag: 99695

SPS Portal restore to new Farm..
Hello - i'm hoping someone can help with this problem.
We are replicating our sharepoint infrastructure onto 2 new farms (the
company is demergin so we need to create 2 new environments for
everything we have!).
Currently we have 2 farms that either host sharepoint sites for
internal users (e.g. company intranet) or external users (e.g.
collaboration sites). The Farms are setup as:
2 x Web Servers (WSS 2.0 & SPS 2003)
1 x Job & Index Server (WSS 2.0 & SPS 2003)
1 x SQL Server (SQL Server 2000).
The 2 new companies will have 1 Farm with all the sites consolidated
into it. Don't ask why there are 2 farms currently - it was
inherited!
Anyway, i am using the SPS Backup and Restore Utility to backup
portals and restore. Everything works as expected for Portals backed
up from the internal farm but not for the external farm.
On restoring a portal we receive the following errors:
In SPS Backup & Restore Utility following message is displayed,
usually about 35% through the restore: "Error: The site database
specified is already in use by another component of the farm". The
popup box also says to consult the database servers event log.
The SQL Server eventlog has the following entry: "Recovery is
checkpointing database 'Projects1_SITE'."
The SQL Activity logs has an entry that says: "Bypassing recovery for
database 'Projects1_SITE' because it is marked IN LOAD." Followed by:
"Recovery is checkpointing database 'Projects_SITE' (18)"
I have seen posts that say to do the restore with the NORECOVERY
switch but i don't see where to specify that using the SPS Backup &
Restore Utility.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Moss 2007 Active Directory/LDAP with SSL Configuration Issue
Hi all, I tried to setup moss 2007 form based authentication against
Active Directory with AD/LDAP Membership Provider. However, I tried
for the last 5 days to figure out what's wrong with the setup but no
luck. Could anyone tell me what could be wrong with the setup?
Here is what I did
1. Create web application to host https://extranet.acme.com with
"default zone" and use form with either AD/LDAP Membership
Provider so external users login with their internal NT Account or
Email (BTW I used SSL 128 bit)
2. Extend the above web application to host intranet http://intranet
with "Intranet zone"
3. Modify web.config of both Central Administration and extranet
4.Here is partial of web.config file that show connection and
membership
//AD Membership Provider
<connectionStrings>
<add name="ADConnection" connectionString="LDAP://server1.acme.com/
CN=Users,DC=acme,DC=com" />
</connectionStrings>
<membership defaultProvider="ADProviderService">
<providers>
<add name="ADProviderService"
type="System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider,
System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" connectionStringName="ADConnection"
connectionUsername="acme\app_account" connectionPassword="abc123"/>
</providers>
</membership>
//LDAP Membership Provider
<membership>
<providers>
<add name="ADProviderService"
type="Microsoft.Office.Server.Security.LDAPMembershipProvider,

useSSL="true" userDNAttribute="distinguishedName"
userNameAttribute="sAMAccountName"
userContainer="OU=Users,OU=Dener,DC=acme,DC=com"
userObjectClass="person" userFilter="(|(ObjectCategory=group)
(ObjectClass=person))" scope="Subtree"
otherRequiredUserAttributes="sn,givenname,cn" />
</providers>
</membership>
When I try AD Membership Provider and login to the form with either
email or nt account, I got the following sign in form error
"The server could not sign you in. Make sure your user name and
password are correct, and then try again."
Then I take a look at the server event viewer, I got the following
error

I checked membership/connection string syntax many times and could not
find anything wrong.
I search on the internet and found several threads about above issues

Creating users
I would like to create some new SharePoint users. My sys admin told me that
he cannot create them in the AD.
The goal is to test the audience with some fake users and to give a demo to
someone logging in from a VPN.
Optimally, our client will will log in as himself (SP Site Collection admin)
through a VPN and connect to SharePoin to see some functionality (always as
himself), and then log in as different users (IndiaUser, MexicoUser) throught
the menu option "Sign me in as a differnt user" to view the audience
functionality.
How can I arrange this from SharePoint? It seems it will only accept domain
users.

Problem with sharepoint intermittently not saving changes.
We are experiencing a problem with Sharepoint intermittently not saving
changes made to word documents & excel spreadsheets in document libraries and
also when opening a document or spreadsheet it will intermittently open
read-only (The file is always opened for editing in the native application.)
Sharepoint allows you to edit a file, make changes and then save, but when
it is reopened the changes have disappeared.
This happens from multiple workstations running XP (SP2) & Office 2003 (SP2

Boxed View Style
Hi
When I create a new view on the contacts list using the Boxed Style,
SharePoint 2007 includes the column headings horizontally at the top of the
view.
This doesn't make sense as the Boxed View pivots the data row to display it
vertically and column headings can be included as labels.
I've checked the behaviour on SP 2003 and it does not include the column
heading, in other words this works as you would expect it to in 2003 but not
in 2007.
Any ideas?
Is there a way to suppress the display of column headings when displaying
lists via a web part?

SharePoint Upgrade Help Needed
Hi all,
I amhaving a single server implementation of SPS 2003 SP3, Sql
2000....everything in one box.
I am moving to new hardware, which will be a full fledge server farm
with web servers, application servers and sql servers all separated.
I do not want to use database migration technique, since ultimately it
would be an in place upgrade, and if some sites are not properly
upgraded, there is no going back...yea I understand that I will have
the original environment intact as a back up....but how would I deal
with a site which is not properly upgraded in the new environment,
given there is no going back option. (Am I right, wrong, there is a
work around, anything).
So, currently, I plan to run the gradual upgrade on my current single
server implementation. Once upgraded, I intend to move everything from
it to the new full fledge farm implementation. (Later, we will retire
this server). (Is this approach correct, incorrect, your suggestions)
Now can I do anything of the following and which is correct, best, or
anything that you suggest:
Backup the whole portal (on my single server implementation) and
restore it to the new farm. And Im done. New farm will have two web
servers, two app servers and sql cluster. The new farm is configured
independently of the old single server implementation. (I wonder if
this is even possible?)
OR, I should use attach/detach to move the sql server components to
new Sql cluster. And then move the web server components to new web
servers. And then configure the app servers. And all that is done
manually. (Am I actually talking about database migration technique
but doing it after the upgrade?)
Portal currently in use is not highly customized, may be a few
frontpage customizations. 500 to 800 users. No custom webparts. One
main level portal. 150 to 200 sites. 50+- subsites.
Please note that doing the gradual upgrade on the current server is
what I HAVE to do, officially.
Anything totally different that you wanna suggest is most welcome.

(MOSS 2007/WSS3) Question about AUTHOR Property: Why can't I edit it?
Ok here's a strange one.
I've got a vanilla Document library in a MOSS 2007 site.
I add the AUTHOR site column to it and upload several WORD documents (both
2003 adn 2007).
The Author comes into the field as expected; however I cannot EDIT it using
the Edit Properties option int he doc library.
In Word 2007 I can go into the (Office Icon)-->Preapre-->Properties window
and I see 3 optoins:
-Document Properites
-Document Properites - Server
-Advanced Properties
If I EDIT the "_Author" property under Advanced Properties, I can change the
Author that shows up in sharepoint.
Editing either of the other 2 doesn't change it.
And I just noticed that editing the Author on the site in Edit-Properties
actually edits the Documents properties, but the site still only shows the
_Author property.
Driving me nuts...any advice is greatly appreciated.

How to accomplish this goal?
Hi guys,
We would like to add a custom list in Sharepoint site. And only let a
specific group users add item, but can not view those items.
I've tried the approach below.
Create 2 lists(list a and list b) with same columns. give the specific group
users contribute permission on list a, but no access on list b. And develop
an event handler on list a's itemadded event. When one item was added in list
a, copy it to list b then delete it from list a.
Unfortunately, I found the event handler did NOT work for the specific group
users. Only work for the group users who have access on list b.

MOSS 2007 Excel Web Access Web Part
Hello,
Can you anyone advise if the MOSS 2007 Excel Web Access Web Part is
compatible with MS Office Excel 2003.
When we add the Excel Webpart and attempt to display a workbook we are
presented with the following error message.
"An error has occurred, Please contact your system administrator if
this problem persists"
Can anyone suggest where we should look to troubleshoot the problem.
Thank you.

Get SharePoint Email Enabled Doc Library to Store Messages as MSG
We have a large (20 GB +) set of Public Folders on Exchange 2000. We
migrate all the closed PF to MOSS 2K7 using Quest's Public Folder
Migrator. We were all ready to go live and move production data, when
we saw the behavior of new email messages sent to them.
Has anyone else seen this problem and found a solution? I'd be willing
to look at another 3rd Party tool of it could get us over this hump
quickly. It really seems like it should be a no-brainer given that the
tool is meant to integrate with Exchange and Outlook.

Is it possible Single Sign-on between two sharepoint sites
I have 2 sharepoint applications in my web server ( First application
is called A and the second application is called B). Both applications
(A+B) are working absolutely fine without any issues. When we browse
the web site A it asks for authentication and once the credentials are
provided, I get access to the web site. This is the same case with
Application B.
There is a link in sharepoint application A to sharepoint application
B. When we follow the link, the authentication popup appears again=85.Is
there any way with which we can avoid the second authentication popup.
Any possible help/links in this will be greatly appreciated.

MOSS 2007 Site Content not appearing
After adding a SP Portal 2003 db to a MOSS 2007 application via sts
(see below) I am unable to see any content from the db. The problem
is when I am looking at the db I see in dbo.alldocs there are some
27000 items both the site version (12.0.0.6219) and BitFlags (262144)
are correct but no data.
STSADM Command:
stsadm -o addcontentdb -url http://blah-web:24146 -databasename
dbblahSITE -datbaseserver
There was no customization in the templates, no web parts... this was
just a straight forward SPS 2003 site that was pre=scan based on the
version number.
I'm at a loss and spent some time on the phone with Microsoft... One
tech asked me what WSS stood for, not feeling too confident in
them....
Any ideas would be appreciated
Just to summarize...
I connected a prescanned SPS2003 to a MOSS 2007 site / web application
not being used by anything else. I am unable to see any of the
content that should be there with the exception of the site structure,
links, sub sites. This was out of the box with no parts or
customization. I can see the content in the db...
How do I now get his content viewable in the site again.
Bad part... There are no backups before the site was upgraded to the
MOSS / WSS 30 schema. Tag: ¹ØÓÚWSS3.0ËÑË÷ADÕÊ»§ Tag: 99619

Login Issue
We just deployed MOSS 2007, and we have the following issue:
Sally logs in to her computer at startup as Sally.
Sally enters her SharePoint portal home URL and is automatically
logged in as Administrator (Sally has access to both accounts as she
is also the SP Admin.)
Sally clicks on "Sign in as Different User" and signs in as Sally.
Sally clicks on "My Site" and is taken to the Administrator's My Site

How can we make it so that Sally logs in automatically as Sally, not
the administrator?

Corrupted PDF files when dragging and dropping to a mapped drive
I have a user who maps drives to his document libraries. Occasionally
after dragging and dropping a PDF file into a doc library mapped
drive, the file will become corrupted. When users download the file
Adobe fails to open the file and says the file is corrupted. However,
when the user uploads the same problem files via the SharePoint site
upload feature, the file goes up there clean.
Mapped drive funcionality is a must for this user as he enjoys the
convenience of working from his file explorer and not have to browse
through the SharePoint site interface. Does anyone have any idea why
dragging and dropping in this manner causes certain PDF files to
corrupt? He is currently trying to pinpoint a common factor between
the problem PDF's. I will post again if he comes up with anything.

list item access
Hi.
I have a Document Library with list item access (permissions set to
each item on the DL).
If a user sees a Document Library View or a Web Part not filtered by
anything (with all items), then that user only sees the documents that
he has permission to read =96 this a correct behavior, as I think.
If the view has any kind of filter, like items added today, for
example, the user sees a list with all documents added today even if
he does not have access to read them (if he clicks on a document a
message saying that he has no permission shows up).
If the user sets an =93alert=94 on that list, he will be informed on any
change in any document, even if he doesn=92t access to it (again, if he
clicks on the document link, inside the email, a message saying that
he doesn=92t have access to the document shows up).
Is this the default behavior? Is there anything I can do to change
these 2 behaviors? i.e. users only sees in any situation, and is only
alerted on documents he has access?
Thanks. Tag: ¹ØÓÚWSS3.0ËÑË÷ADÕÊ»§ Tag: 99598

"Error Access denied" to site
We have the weirdest thing just happen with our install of MOSS and it
has stumped us all.
Under our Ops department site, we have 3 sub sites for Admin,
Frontline and 3rd Line. Admin and 3rd Line are fine, but no-one other
than the 2 SharePoint admin accounts can access Frontline.
The error is the standard "Access Denied" message that you would get
if you didn't have permissions to the site, but the site is using
inherited permissions, so exactly the same as the parent Ops site and
the 2 sibling sites, but nothing. We have done everything that we can
think of bar recreating the site, so hoping that someone might be able
to save us before we have to resort to this ... Tag: ¹ØÓÚWSS3.0ËÑË÷ADÕÊ»§ Tag: 99581

Wss 3.0 SP1 install using SQL 2005: collation problem?
I am trying to install SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 to use our SQL 2005 server
but SharePoint complains about the collation. I cannot reinstall SQL and
change the server's collation since the server has other applications using
it in production
If I run the configuration wizard it has an error:
The SQL Server collation on SQL Server instance 'sqlserverX' is not
supported. Windows SharePoint Services requires a Latin1 General dictionary
order, case insensitive, accent sensitive, kana sensitive, and width
sensitive collation (SQL_Latin1_General_*_CI_AS)
If I follow the DBA created databases instructions from page 42 in this MS
document (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=115666) and create the db's
with the proper collation, when I run the psconfig command it fails with a
similiar message:
Command:
"psconfig.exe -cmd configdb -create -server sqlserverX\instanceY -database
sp_config user sharepoint_services -password sharepointpass
-admincontentdatabase sp_admin"
Error:
"An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException was thrown.
Additional exception information: The specified SQL server instance has
invalid sort order Latin1_General_BIN. Choose a server instance that
performs case-insensitive and non-binary comparisons."
Is there a way to tell Sharepoint to use the db we have already created or
some other way to fix this? Tag: ¹ØÓÚWSS3.0ËÑË÷ADÕÊ»§ Tag: 99565
Anonymous viewing RSS feed
I'm getting the dreaded "The RSS webpart does not support authenticated
feeds" error when attempting to view a list with the RSS Web part. I have
Kerberos Authentication enabled and working (All users authenticate via
Kerberos) and I have enabled Anonymous Access on my site. I've even had this
RSS feed working without issue, however a day or two ago it broke and I don't
know why.
When I go into the List and click
Settings -> List Settings -> Permissions for this List -> Settings ->
Anonymous Access
I have the four boxes available to select. It doesn't matter which box is
selected, the settings don't stick. I have selected View, Edit, Add, and even
all four, but when I click Ok and go back in they are all unselected. I am
unable to locate anything in the logs except a "401 unauthorized" error when
attempting to load the RSS feed (Which is obvious since the settings aren't
applying correctly).
Has anyone seen this before? Is there a hidden setting somewhere that I'm
missing? All external RSS web parts are working as expected, it's only ones
that are attempting to read a List Library. And, to stress, this was working
up until a day or two ago when it just mysteriously broke.... Tag: ¹ØÓÚWSS3.0ËÑË÷ADÕÊ»§ Tag: 99560
allow access to default view only
Hi,
I have a task top create a "expense form".. for the company.
I created and library where anybody can submit a expense form (I used
infopath and workflow using "sharepoint designer").
Then I ended up with two "person columns"... "created by" and "assigned to".
Now I need to restrict access to this list... where one can view/edit items
that is only created-by-me or assigned-to-me.
I created a view that does this....
Now I need to stop users from looking at non-allowed items... create other
views, use other tricks to view etc.
How can I restrict users to only the customized view?
Any help is deeply appreciated

MOSS2007 Server Capacity Reasonable?
I am currently doing research on the server capacity for a future
possible MOSS2007 server. Since it's currently virtualized using
VMWare, the speed is a nightmare. (Oh the horror.. Thank god it's only
for testing and it's already slow with only me on it!) After
consulting with Microsoft Technet articles, diverse (MVP) blogs and
people within this company that had some minor\major experience in
SharePoint I have come with the following specs for our organization.
Which is aimed at medium collaboration and medium publishing with
around 140 employees.
Through this newsgroup I am trying to have a better view on the needs
and if what I suggested will be sufficient.
Though it is not orthodox to install it on a single machine, our
organization is looking very careful with the current budget. (Only
for the server, we already own the licenses for the software) My aim
is to start it on a (medium to heavy duty) single server, and when
MOSS needs more resource we'll move into a 2-server or 3-server farm.
FrontEnd+SQL+Index:
2x Intel Xeon Quad Core E5420 (12MB L2 Cache - 2.50Ghz - 45nm - TDP80w
- Bus:1333Mhz)
Memory: 16GB 667MHZ Registered + ECC
Using SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition (To avoid the 4GB max memory in
Express)
6x 15k SAS 147GB in RAID5
Would I encounter a bottleneck with this machine? If not, is dual
processor an overkill for the current amount of users?
