I am new to sharepoint and I am editing the default sites page. On the right
is 2 web parts
1)newest sites
2)sites I have approved
How do I remove these from the page. Sites seems to be a lttle differnet
from the other pages, because the other pages have an edit page where you can
modify the page.

thanks.

You cannot remove these web parts like you would from a normal Area. Instead
open the Site page from FrontPage 2003, specifically the summary.aspx page,
and then right click on the web parts you want to remove and either delete
them or hide them.

Do I need to install front page to the server or can I just install it to my
computer. I am working from my computer but all the pages are on the server.
Should I copy the page from the server, edit it and then copy it back to the
server. Also what is the path where that page can be found?

You don't need to install FrontPage on the server, just on your machine.

The path to open the file should be similar to
http://server2003/SiteDirectory/Lists/Sites/Summary.aspx

Once you open http://portalurl from FrontPage, you'll be given a nice tree
view of the portal, and you can click into Areas and navigate your way down
to that page. You can then right click and copy that page to make a backup
copy, and then start your work on the non-backup copy.

But I just found a better way to do it, go to this url:
http://server2003/SiteDirectory/Lists/Sites/Summary.aspx?Mode=Edit&PageView=Shared

of course, edit it based on your site url, and then you'll get the familiar
little arrow on the web parts, just click on the arrow and choose close, and
bingo, their gone. This is much better than opening it in Frontpage.
