I have a situation in which a group needs to be able to
input keywords to search for documents that contain that
word. The documents will be in different formats, MS
Word, Excel, PDF files, TIF files, etc...

My question is has anyone been able to successfully
configure their portals for this capability or even if it
is possible.

Yes, add the Ifilter to your server, if its a *.tif, *.zip *.pdf just add
the correct Ifiter.

Ok. We just added that and it fixes only part of the
problem we are having. We are not able to search
Microsoft Word documents unless they have the rtf
extension. Any ideas?

Try this.

1.. Open Portal, Click Site Setting
2.. Click Configure search and indexing
3.. Click Include file types
Insure that you see the *.pdf, *.tif and whatever
