Yeah I just found out that the contractor who initially installed SPS has installed a non-custom search webpart. I myself am a new contractor picking up the pieces, and have no experience with sps. Fun and Games.
What I need to do is set up the search to return only employees profiles with wild card functionality. The fields that you mentioned such as preferred name are populated by the AD Import.
