Hello Barry,
I'm assuming that you are able to search for the document from the WSS
site itself (which tells me that your SQL search has been installed
correctly).
If you create a new WSS site under the portal root then you have to make
sure that it is included in the site directory. If it is then make sure that
the site has been "approved". Sites that have simply been created and not
approved will not show up in the search results from the main portal site.

If this is the case then you may want to look over the section
Administration > Managing Search Settings > Managing Search Settings for the
Portal > Manaing the Site Directory for Search > Managing Crawling of the
Site Directory.

Hope this Helps!

According to a Microsoft person on the SPS team contacted by our account
manager, there have been at least three B2 TR upgrade workarounds for Search
posted on the private beta newsgroups. Clearly, these workarounds aren't
getting spread any wider to us mere mortals. Also, according to the same
source, another issue with Search not working for the B2 TR build had to do
with "an old version of stssoap.dll being left behind in the GAC. The
workaround here is to make sure it is removed with the 'gacutil /u stssoap'
command" - whatever that may mean.

As for me, I finally got Search to work in both SPS and WSS after several
complete format/reinstalls from the metal up. Quite why it worked the third
time around, and not before, I have not the faintest idea. Third time lucky,
or the phase of the moon, I suppose.
