I also had this problem, however, everything was configured correctly in SPS.
After searching all over, I found the fix for my version of this problem at
http://wss.collutions.com/Lists/FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=157.
There are a number of suggestions in that thread, but the one that worked in
my situation was putting the BuiltIn\Administrators group back into the
Security\Logins on the SQL server. MS recommends as a best practice removing
this group for security reasons, but this is the second case for my company
in the last year where this has broken an MS app.
I am merely posting here in case this can help someone in the future.
