    - Missing Web Application Service Hello, It appears that the server we use as our WFE is missing the Windows SharePoint Services Web Application role/service. It was there prior as it is the only WFE in our medium farm atm. When I say missing, I mean when looking at Central Administration > Operations > Services on Server it is no longer there. Document Conversions Launcher, Document Conversions Load Balancer, Excel Calculation Services, Office SharePoint Server Search, and Windows SharePoint Services Search all appear in the list of services but now Windows SharePoint Services Web Application. I am wondering if re-running the configuration wizard will repair this and if I accept the part about Central Administration when re-running the wizard, will I end up with two central admin web apps? Will doing any of this affect my current sites (i.e. I read a blog entry about stopping and starting Windows SharePoint Services Web Application and it removing customizations to the site and to IIS).     - Cascading Metadata - MOSS 2007 We're a real estate development company and we're looking to create a metadata structure for our document libraries that matches our job cost codes. We've decided on three levels. Primary, secondary, and tertiary. If we were to create lists for our metadata the list would contain 15 items for the primary, 50 items for the secondary, and about 100 items for the tertiary. What we're trying to find a solution for is if a user were to upload a document into MOSS and in the first drop down the user chooses "Metals" in the second dropdown list they should only see the options associated with Metals, and in the third drop down they should only see the items associated with their choice in the second drop down. We can't accomplish this with lists. Wondering it anyone knows how this can be done? Business data catalog? Can anyone provide some examples or direction? thanks in advance. Hello, I am trying to rename the Categories tab that is auto populated as a part of the Site Directory's template (Categories|Top Sites|Site Map) in SPS2007 without breaking the connection to the Category/Sites in Category webpart. When I attempt to edit only the tab name (not page), 2 things happen: 1) the edited tab name appears as a new tab with the summary of Category links below but their urls link to themselves.     - REPOST: Content Query Web Part: Tasks filtered by 'assigned to' gives MOSS 2007: When creating a Content query web part that shows all tasks in a site collection assigned to a specified person, The tasks are only shown when the page is in Edit state. As soon as I click Save (or Publish, for publishing pages), the tasks just disappear completely, leaving only the web part title. When editing the page again, the tasks spontaneously appear again.     - how to set up email to document libraries Hi, I would like to set up MOSS 2007 to use document libraries that allow an email with an attachment sent to the library. All of the documentation I have read so far says to install the SMTP service on the MOSS application server, however the documentation then goes on to mention that this is not required if you already have an exchange server available. Although the documentation says that its possible to use exchange server as the smpt service, it doesnâ??t say how to set it up. As I understood this, in Sharepoint Portal Server 2003, to have an email integrated document library, you needed to set up a public folder that could receive email, and then Sharepoint would periodically go out and retrieve any mail items in that public folder. In exchange 2007 is this still the preferred method of integrating email with document libraries? I thought that Microsoft was trying to get away from using public folders for processes such as this? Can any one point me to a step by step document that outlines how to use exchange 2007 as the smtp service for email enabled document libraries in MOSS 2007? Any help would be appreciated.     - MOSS SearchServiceInstance 6482 error: FIPS validated algorithms I support a server that has the GPO policy "System cryptography: Use FIPS compliant algorithms for encryption" enabled. I saw on Live Search that I needed to modify the machineKey attribute on my web.config files in IIS to use the 3DES algorithm instead of SHA1, which was needed in order for any of the web sites to come up. However, once every minute I still am getting a 6482 error in the Application event log - I've tried everything I can think of to resolve this but I'm stuck!! I've re-entered the service account passwords from Central Admin, re-entered the passwords in the Services snap-in, re-ran the configuration wizard, reinstalled MOSS, reinstalled Service Pack 1, recreated the SSP, stopped & started the Office Search from w/in Services on this server...still no luck.     - Stsadm import/export not replicating navigation We've create a sharepoint application (a single site coolection) and want to duplicate it on a development server. The Site collection has a lot of tweaking to the default navigation options on each site and sub site. I created a new, empty application on the dev server using the same site collection template (something that, IMO, shouldn't matter for a full import, but apparently it has to be the same). I then imported the site, and everything looks good except for the navigation. The navigation seems to be a mix of the navigation from the original site and the default navigation from the new site. The things (like News, Reports) that we removed from the source application are still in the destination application after we do the import. Am I doing something wrong? I couldn't find an option in stsadm that says bascially; "blow away everything about the site collection i'm importing to and replace it with the site collection I'm importing.     - Where is list of items exported from a Content Deployment Job The 2007 SharePoint Content deployment report shows the number of items exported when the job has completed. Where can you see a list of those objects? Is it written to a log file or is it available somewhere else? I assume since yopu are able to search for a particular item it must be stored in the database somewhere. Seems to me this is valuable information. Any ideas?     - task email alerts not working Hi, I've configured alerts on my tasks list to track all changes and instantly send it to my email. Right after that my portal sends me a letter, that alerts are configured. But when I create new Task item no notification letter comes. This tasks are configured at site http://portal/resources/ThisSite. Before it used to be a site collection at http://portal/sites/ThisSite, but we had to move it into our main site collection under http://portal, what I did using stsadm -export/import.     - Task Notification Email Alerts Not Working We have a medium moss farm. One of our solutions is unable send task alert emails. I have moss installed and am at the point where I can create a team site. I'm however not sure where I should do it. I see two locations. One is via the SharePoint Administrator as a site collection (sharepont.com/sites/) and the other location is via the main sharepoint front page in the site directory (sharepoint.com/ SiteDirectory) What is the best place to create new team sites?     - Item level secuity; administrator edit I am running Portal Server 2007. I have a list that I want to set up with item level security such that it is set as: "Specify which items users can edit: Only Thier Own" The users will be entering their own records in the list and should never be able to see someone else's. So i access to SSP Search Setting and i allow ContenType property to be used in scopes. Then i create Contact scope, applying the rule base on property ContentType = Contact. And it doesn't works, items found are 0. I do the same task on FileExtension property ( = doc) just to verify if error should be about crawling, refresh or reset, but it works.     - SSO db upgrade from SPS2003 to MOSS2007 Hi all, I have migrated SPS2003 farm to MOSS2007 farm by "Content DB" upgrade with only a problem.... SSO database! I have try to backup the SSO db in the SPS farm from SQL Server (Management Studio) and restore it in the MOSS farm. I have also made the backup and restore of the cryptographic key (from SPS to MOSS). The problem is that I'm not able to read the credentials stored in the SSO db in the MOSS farm: it seems a decryption problem.I used a simple web part that lists the credentials stored in the SSO for the current user. The only way for a SSO db upgrade is an in-place or gradual upgrade? in this two last scenarios the SSO upgrade will works? Anyone has a suggestion for this issue or some experience on it?     - MOSS 2007 task list I have a task list that emails several people when something on the task is changed. The email says that my name was removed from the task (along with 3 other people) and someone elses name was put on. Problem is, that task was never assigned to any of us. None of us have configured an alert for anything on that list. In fact, two of the individuals have never used that particular sub site.     - Inheriting content types I created a new content type programatically using Sharepoint Object Model. It fails when I inherit it from any content type. The error log says "Failed to find the parent content type ID=...". I have the ID= "parent content type Id + 00 + GUID " so that the new content type inherits from the parent content type.     - Reporting Services 2005 in SharePoint Integrated mode with forms Well, I have reporting services 2005 installed and configured in sharepoint integrated mode, so I am deploying reports in sharepoint libraries. After that I configured sharepoint to use forms authentication with builtin AspNetSqlMembership provider, but this action caused reports to not execute. I searched and found hotfix 3186 for this issue and applied it, but nothing has changed! Error I have been experiencing is following: An unexpected error occurred while connecting to the report server.     - Advanced permissions problem Dear, I have a MOSS 2007 portal with some subsites. On half of the sites I cannot enter the "advanced permissions" page anymore. I disabled custom errors and enabled call stack to have a better error description then the ms "unknown error".     - cannot migrate WSS3.0 data to OSS2007 across different hardware Server 1: SBS 2003 SP1 with WSS3.0 Server 2: Win2003 with OSS2007, joined the domain that SBS handles I have tried to do a backup and then restore to the OSS2007 server: lists come across fine; sub sites based on site admin templates come over fine; sub sites based on server admin templates do not come across ("unexpected error") Then I tried to save as template with content on the sub sites that didn't come across. Each then gives an error that the site is too big (>10Mb). The subsites based on the server admin templates are teeny weeny, just a few months of use in a 5 client environment.     - Exclusion of directorys in sharepoint websites Hi. i have a little problem. i like to create a webapplication (asp.net 2.0) in a iis - website which is in use by a moss 2007 / wss3.     - emailing shortcuts: url too long We are starting to get complaints from users stating they can't paste shortcuts into an email from some folders within our sharepoint doc libs. I am assuming the add hyperlink form in Outlook 2007 has a limit of 255 and the test URL has 307. We find it odd that MS would pad URLs with so many fillers that they render it unusable. I think you would have to do that through code.

Have you considered using a people search core results?
