Hi

I am using SPS and WSS, I have team websites that I wish to import user

groups from AD rather than granting the access to these sites by adding

individual user name.

These sites contain sub sites that wont inherit the same permission as
the parent sites. My intention is, after granting all the users to
access the sites, I would like to create Cross Site groups that I could

choose to grant for different subsites.

Do you think my approach is correct? I am a newbie and everyday I found

something new to learn on both SPS and WSS.

Could you suggest how to

1. Import users from AD to 'Manage uers' area in WSS
2. Create Cross Site groups to grant a group per sub site

Thank you very much for any of you advice. Looking forward to your
reply

You can add domain groups as users to a SharePoint site, but you can't add
domain groups to Cross Site groups. So your approach would work for the top
level sites, but not for creating your Cross Site groups. You will have to
add individual users to those. But Cross Site groups are a good way to keep
things more central if you foresee having the same users on many sub sites.

As in how to create users for your site? Once in Manage Users, click Add
Users and type in the domain\domain group name, and select the site group
they need to be in.

Site settings - Go to Site Administration - Manage Cross Site Groups
Create new cross site groups and then add those cross site group names as
users in the Add Users screen for the desired site.

Note the cross site group info is for WSS, not portal. WSS questions should
be posted in the WSS newsgroup: microsoft.public.sharepoint.windowsservices
