It's a common problem. mysite location is setup when you create a
SharedService and by default it is located in a root of an administration
site.
I tried different ways to move it to portal - no success.
As a partial solution I pressed "create a new web application" in "my site
location" section during setup of SSP, created dedicated mysite application
with mysite.domain.com name and port 80, and set it as mysite location. At
least a got mysites on port 80.

There is another complete solution in reply to my old post here:

(answer #3)
but it didn't work in my case. On step 3 I got an error saying that there
was another site at that location.
