    - SharePoint 2007 design - web applications Hi, Can anyone point me to any information available about when to use a new web application in SharePoint 2007? I think I understand what a web application is but I'm not sure what logic you would use to decide when to use a new one and when not to. Each web application is an IIS web site. I know that if you want to use different authentication methods (integrated and forms authentication, for example) then this is one reason to create separate web applications. I know that each web application can use a different application pool (and therefore run as a different service account identity). If you are setting up a simple standalone farm for a relatively small number of users, would you create a single web application (there would actually be two counting the Central Administration web app) and put the portal, SSP and My Site all as site collections under the one web application? Or would you create a separate web application for the SSP? The My Site? If so, why? I'm struggling with when to use a new web application and when not to. Each site collection lives in a content database (which can contain many site collections), but multiple content databases can live in a single web application, so there doesn't seem to be a "database reason" to create multiple web applications. With host header mode you can even create site collections on completely different host headers all within the existing single web application, so this is another reason that you rarely MUST use multiple web applications. You still can of course, but there doesn't seem to be many configurations that force you to use multiple web applications. Is there a compelling reason to put your SSP in it's own web application?     - MOSS 2007 Javascript and loginErrors Hello, I've installed a new W2K3 server with it's own domain (active directory), with all the latest updates and .NET 1.1,2.0 and 3.0. Also installed SQL Server 2005. After succesfully installing MOSS 2007 and running the configuration wizard succesfully, i browsed to Central Administration. As usual i needed to login. But strangly not 1 time, it asked me about 8 times for a username password. The page showed up. This happens on all the Central Administration pages. Strange thing is that on some pages i also receive Javascript errors (for example "Object Not Found")..... So most of the pages are due to this not working..... Who can help me?     - MOSS 2007 Development - VM or no VM? All, what has worked best for you in regards to developing MOSS/ Sharepoint based solutions? I'm working on a WCM project and wanted to validate my insight on MOSS development. When I mention development, I mean the capability to perform the full gamut of MOSS development (web parts, workflow, master pages, forms, etc). Are you: 1 - Using a Virtual Machine based environment running Windows 2003 Server, MOSS, VS2005, SQL, etc (my preferred method)? 2 - Developing locally, with your host machine running Windows 2003 Server, MOSS, VS2005, SQL, etc? Also, has anyone ever developed a Sharepoint Web Part without installing MOSS/SPS locally? I'm almost 100% sure this isn't possible (and I'm not talking about User Controls using Smart Part). You can create ASP.NET 2.0 webparts without the MOSS framework, but you are missing out on of the Sharepoint Web Part features (ie - caching framework). A situation where you would not need a VM or local install is if you are doing remote design/configuration of your MOSS site (site content editor). If you are doing MOSS WCM development and are NOT performing Web Part development, then you can always just use Sharepoint Designer to connect to a development server to modify Master Pages, content, etc. Any insight on how you are doing MOSS development in any of the scenarios above would be greatly appreciated.     - Granting full rights to an AD group to all MOSS 2007 sites in a site collection Hi, We have a group of people who need full rights to all content in our main SharePoint 2007 site collection (a single site collection under a web application). I would like to do this by adding all these users to an active directory security group, and granting rights that way. This makes it easy to manage. From what I can tell, there is no way to do this. Am I right? You can add an AD security group to the "Farm Administrator group" section. However, being a farm administrator does not mean you can access all content in all sites in a site collection. In fact, you can be a Farm Administrator and not actually have permission to access any sites. As a Farm Administrator you can grant yourself full access to all sites by editing the Site Collection Owner and making yourself either the Primary or Secondary owner. If you do this, then you have full rights to all content within that site collection. From what I can tell, only Site Collection Owners and Site Collection Administrators (Owners are automatically Administrators) have full rights to all sites in the site collection. However, you can only add users to this section and NOT an active directory security group. Is there another way I can do this? I can grant farm rights to an AD group and I can give an AD group administrator rights on the server itself, but neither of these options grant access to content (but both options do allow you to take ownership of the site collection if you wanted).     - Failed to register SharePoint Services Hello, I am trying to re-install Windows SharePoint Services 3 onto a Windows Server 2003 SP1 machine. It goes through the install and then while it is configuring, it quits after step 5 with these errors: - Failed to register SharePoint Services - Could not access the Search Service configuration database - An exception of type system.runtime.interopservices.comexeption was thrown. I had this error once before, so I did a complete re-install of Windows Server 2003 , asp.net, and SharePoint Services 3, and all worked fine. I am trying to avoid the complete re-install of the O/S. I believe it is related to permissions somewhere, but have tried articles 899965 and 909444 with no success. At this point, it looks like another re-install would be quicker, but I would like to resolve this by finding out why and correcting the issue.     - Title column in system item content type I everybody I wanted to change the default name of the system item content type to my native language, and I did it, the problem is that when I am running a SPQuery it doesn't work anymore, I get the error: "One or more field types are not installed properly. Go to the list settings page to delete these fields" I went back and tried to change the name of the item content type back to title, but now I can't I receive the error: "The column name that you entered is already in use or reserved.     - Custom Content Types I have created a custom Content type, which inherits from Announcements. The Custom Content type is meant to store information about New-Hires at our company. It has the new employee's name, manager name, job title, photo, start date, background, etc. I want to create an announcement list based on this new content type and have it displayed on the home page of our MOSS 2007 portal. I want the list view on the page to display the employees name, and start date. When a user clicks on the employee name in the list, it should take them to a details page showing all the other information about the new-hire. I created the list and put the list view on our home page. when a user clicks an empolyee name in the list , it takes him to the DispForm.aspx for that page. I Want to customized the display of that page to show the photo in the uper right, other stats in a table to the left of the photo, and background on the bottom. I thought that when I created a custom Content type, I could create a custom display format for that content type in MOSS 2007. I can't ficgure out how to do this. can anyone offer sugestions as to how i could create a custom display format for a content type that inherits from announcements. BTW. I did watch ted pattisons screen cast about how to create custom content types and custom pages for them. I created aniother custom content type that inherits from Page. But i get "unauthorizedaccess", even with a user with full control for sharepoint, and local admin on the machine. It only works if I use the account I used when installing sharepoint.     - MOSS 2007 Web Presence Requirements My current implementation to show Presence via a webpage is written in ASP.NET 2.0 and uses PersonaControls to interact with Outlook/ Communicator 2005 on the client. In order for this to work the client must have Outlook or Communicator installed and running. Does the Presence functionality provided in MOSS 2007 require anything on the client side or is there a direct connection on the server side to the Live Communication Server? Thanks. This development was made as Sharepoint 2003 did not suit our needs and Sharepoint 2007 was not ready. Now that Sharepoint 2007 is ready (and being demo'd) I am getting questions regarding features available in the new Sharepoint that we do not currently have. I am reluctant to throw away the current Intranet and replace it with Sharepoint, but I would like to use some of the new features (without jumping out of one site and into another).     - Alternate Access Mappings in MOSS Can I use AAM to change or redirect urls to current web applications? I want to change the url away from the http://server:port/ scheme. I have been working on creating an Intranet infrastructure for my company. I worked on it for a couple of weeks before my Network Admin decided it was ok to upgrade to ISA2006 (from 2000). So I have a bunch of sites using the http://server:port/ url scheme. But now I can create new sites with the http://site.company.com/ url. How do I change the old sites to the new url scheme?     - Permissions Error We have an issie with permissions on our WSS/SPS sites. The permissions basically aren't being effective - all users are currently set to "Read Only" and "view only" permissions, yet all users can do anything they please with lists etc. We have checkeed permissions at every level, and set them all to read/ view, yet there is still this problem.     - Creating heirarchical navigation I am trying to create a heirarchical navigation for several sub-sites I have created. The problem I am having is that these sub-sites all need to be 'grouped' together under a menu (in the nav). The only way I have found on how to do this is to create a blank site (off the top level site) and then create all the sites under that. The problem with that is there is a blank site which I don't really need. For example, this is what I want: Portal ---HR ---Accounting ---Teams -------Design -------Engineering -------Support Notice how design, engineering, and support are all 'children' of Teams. I would rather not have the "Teams" menu go to a blank site. Right now it is a separate site that is displayed in the nav with a dropdown which displays the three 'child' sites, but if someone clicks on just Teams, it goes to a blank site. Is this possible?     - IE Error when trying to open Office documents in Sharepoint Hello, We use Sharepoint as our IntraNet. There are many offices docs stored there for sharedc access. I recently moved to a new PC, and on this new machine, IE crashes any time I attempt to open an office doc through shrepoint. This crash gives the following message: "An unhandled win32 exception occurred in IEXPLORE.exe [904]" The error number 904 is not always the same. This occurs if I click on a document link to open it, or drop down the menu and select "Edit in ..". It does NOT occur if I drag the link from Sharepoint to my desktop, and then open the document from that shortcut. That has been my work-around, but it isn't very convenient at all.     - Max lenght for the name of a document library I use a software that allows to create automatically a document library on SPPS 2003 by the related .NET object. When I specify a name for the document library long equals to 70 characters it is created with the correct name but the URL of the document library is truncated (almost 20 characters lost).     - Content Index Log Gatherer Warning I was wondering if anybody ever came across the following warning message while performing an update on a Sharepoint 2003 content index: "(0x12) Error: (0x0 The operation completed successfully. ) Description: ()." Although the message claims an error occured, the log gatherer places this message amongst it's warnings. I have noticed the error (warning) on a variety of different file types (xls, pdf, txt, dwg, dot) and also that the files on which the error (warning) occurs are indeed searchable on completion of the content index's update.     - MOSS: how to make the rootfolder of My Site accessible I use Webdrive to access MOSS sites for special purposes, I was able to assign a driveletter to the Sharepoint portal root folder, but cannot find a MySite root folder for another driveletter. I know that My Site runs through another port (in my case), but where can I find the rootfolder, in order to make one driveletter that accesses all My Sites?     - Boolean search on an external source Hi everyone, We added an external content source in Sharepoint Portal Server 2003, but the full-text search is working... too much! This content source contains a lot of documents and if you look for certain words (for instance "home" and "work") SPS retrieves all the documents with "home" or "work" in the text within, using an OR clause. This causes that our users cannot find the document they're looking for. I did some search but it seems that using an AND clause or wildcards (% or *) is not possible. Is that really true?     - Error when creating the Searchcenter Hallo, on one MOSS 2007 Site I have a problem when creating an new Site using the Search Center with Tabs Template. After a few Seconds I get an Error Message. After that I can see in Sharepoint Designer that the Site is created and that there are some Objects too. But the Site does not work and is not added on the left and top of the Main Site. I even cannot call the site with http://sharepoint/searchcenter. I have the German Version of MOSS 2007, so I try to translate the Error Message: The Value for "AvailablePageLayouts" includes a invalid URL. All Pagelayout-URLs in this String must refer to the server. The URL "~SiteCollection/_catalogs/masterpage/searchmain.aspx" ("/_catalogs/masterpage/searchmain.aspx") is not included in the Sitecollection "/". Just in case my translation is weird I include the Original German Version: Der Wert fuer "AvailablePageLayouts" enthaelt eine ungueltige URL. Alle Seitenlayout-URLs innerhalb dieser Zeichenfolge muessen Serverbezogen sein. Die URL "~SiteCollection/_catalogs/masterpage/searchmain.aspx" ("/_catalogs/masterpage/searchmain.aspx") ist in der aktuellen Websitesammlung nicht enthalten. When I go to my Personal Page on "My Sites" and try to create a new Site with the Searchcenter with Tabs Template it works. So there must something be wrong with my Main Site. I tried to compare the created Searchcenter from My Site with the one created in the Main Site. I could see that at least 2 Lists (Searchcenter and Searchresults) are not created and that the Websitefeatures are not enabled. Maybe there are missing much more things. It just looks like the Site is created and it fails somewhere while creating all the Content for it. So it stops with an error and leaves a incomplete, not working Site on the Server. Any Ideas?     - Search By Type I'm working on a custom search page. I'd like to add to my search page the "search by type" dropdown list that is on the out-of-the-box search page. On the out-of-the-box advanced search page, the "search by type" list contains items such as "Area items", "Areas", "Document libraries", "People", "Pictures", etc. My question is, how do I build that list?     - SPS2003 Session Corrupted with SSL I have an application that I wrote to run in SPS 2003. There is an issue on some pages if the user pauses for a couple of minutes before clicking the button that calls the methods to write some data back to the database, a blank screen is returned (with the same url of the original screen). Obviously something is timing out or the session is getting corrupted, but I can't tell what it is. I increased the Connection Timeout in IIS from 120 to 480 seconds. I cannot reproduce the issue in the Test system. The main difference in the Test system is that the Production system is set up with SSL and the Test system is not. I did find some entries in the IIS log file around the time when the issue shows itself. There are calls to /_vti_bin/owssvr.dll on port 80 and 443 (see below). I would think that the calls would be on port 443 only.     - Central Admin problem I'm having trouble accessing the Central Admin site on MOSS 2007. I migrated to new server hardware by joining a server to the farm and then removing the old server. All seems to be well except that I have to explicitly add default.aspx to view the admin home page. This worked fine post migration yesterday and stopped working about 11am today. I verified that default.aspx is listed on the default document page as it should be. IIS logs show a 401 error when we try to access / on the site.     - Saving a Wiki as a Template in MOSS Hello, We've discovered that if you save a Wiki library as a template (with content) and then create a new Wiki based on it that template then links between the pages don't work. This is because the links are saved in the template as absolute instead of relative. Are there any suggestions for working around this?     - Running SPS? Need to update SPS? I am new to Sharepoint, so please bare with me (inherited system). I need to setup a workflow app to approve documents that go to customers/ vendors. I was going to do it as a separate web based app, but then I found this site: http://www.walisystems.com/articles/sps/spsdoclib.asp If it can integrate with SPS, the chances of actual adoption are much better. I have the database completely built and I get to step 8. When I open SPS and click "Configure virtual server..." the next page is not quite like his. First we don't have 9 sites, but more importantly all I have is some office thing, and default web site. I am assuming that SPS is running on the default web site. Next to the default web site it says "Upgrade" and when I click on it I only have the option to "upgrade a server or virtual server" and there is apparently no way to configure this website through SPS Central Administration (see pic below). Also I cannot modify "advanced settings" on a document library because I cannot find a link to do that. I am assuming it is missing due to the previous problem. My question is, am I running the wrong version of SPS? I know I am in some way, but why does say I need to upgrade? Is there another place I can make these changes?     - Spontaneous 404 error I was minding my own business last week after having updated the GAC with the latest version of my webpart dll when all of sudden I started getting 404 errors when I refreshed my page. I've checked out IIS to make sure it was still running and there are no weird entries in the system log or the trace files. Hi.. Sorry.. But I can't find this setting anywhere.. Where can I
increase the amount of time that a user is logged in, when they hit a
sharepoint 3.0 site? It seems to be for the length of the browser
session, but I'd like to make it for x hours instead...

It's actually roughly the same as it was in v2 (but moved down to the "web
application" level)

Go to the server and run SharePoint Central Administration (or run
http://servername:nnnnn from the browser with the appropriate port number)

Then Applications management; Web Application General Settings.

The default is still 30 mins and it can be amended.
