    - Urgent - permissions on areas Hi there I desperately need help. By the use of the object model I created a new area and removed InheritedSecurity. Furthermore I deleted the permissions on the area and then inserted some new permissions.     - Document Quotas Hello! Recently we have run into a problem with the number of documents our users are uploading into a single document library. According to the document "Capacity Planning for Windows SharePoint Services" (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/wss/2/all/adminguide/en-us/stsb07.mspx) we should be creating sub-folders in this document library since there are well over 2000 documents in it (about 20,000) all contained in the base folder. Is there a mechanism for quotas on the number of documents in a library? I know we can create quotas based on overall size, but we are interested in quotas on numbers of documents...preferably per folder. I did not find any information on these types of quotas. The crux of the issue is that this interfering with the CommVault backups of our portal. According to CommVault, we need to fix this based on the information contained in the "Capacity Planning for Windows SharePoint Services" document.     - Help! Design tips for a Portal Knowledge Base At the company I work for, our small IT staff is running into the problem that our employees don't have a proper storage space for their documents. They complain that they have documents that are useful outside of their department and would like us to create a designated site/area for these files. This has been an ongoing problem for everyone and to solve it I would like to design a central knowledge base where we can upload, organize, and possibly discuss these docs. We're all n00bs with Sharepoint and are having issues coming up with a good design and structure for this KB. What we would like to have is a tree hierarchy (not unlike a discussion board) that's organized by topic or category. Where users can post articles, comments, start discussions, and upload/attach documents. In addition we'd like for our documents to belong to multiple categories/topics as they are applicable. For example: I have a document on HOW TO use Remote Desktop. That document could fall under the topic: Accessing a Remote Server, but also the topic: Assisting Desktop Users. If I search for "remote desktop" I want that document to show it is a "member" of those topics. Perhaps there's a way to use metadata? At this point, anything is helpful!!     - Moving content to another SPPS, what happens to versioning?? I think I have my answer, but I want to throw this out there just in case.... We have a test SPPS box with some content on it. The Server Farm Account Setting page is supposed to come up first after the install, however, I am unable to login.     - User Access Problem Hello, We have a couple of users out of hundreds who can access the SharePoint portal without a problem. But when they try to access the Team Sites (WSS) which they are members to, they get asked for a login and password and after they have entered it three times it allows them to ask for an access request.     - Indexing Choice Fields Hi all I have a custom sharepoint list which has a Choice field type, it appears that the indexer doesn't crawl this field as I cannot search on any data that is stored in this field.     - mapped personal folder opens word docs in read only For some reason when I map my personal folder as a drive it opens up word documents as read only and only word documents. Is there anyway to fixing this? Nothing opens as read-only when I create a webfolder (http://portal/personal/jackson) but when I create a mapped drive (\\portal\personal\jackson\), only word docs are opening up read-only. I Can use the Page Viewer Web Part, but I need the ability to make the web part appear/dissappear based on the user security.     - errror: Server does not contain Document Management components... Hello, I tried to assign a server name (in SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration > Configure Server Topology) for the "Document Library Server Component (Optional)" I got the error: "Server myserver could not be contacted or does not contain Document Management components. Please verify that the server can be contacted or install Document Management components on the server." The sharepoint is actually installed on the same server that I'm trying to contact. Sherepoint actually had no other problems during configuration or usage or portal on this server. Even I can create documents in the library from my PC. So why do I get the above error when configuring server topology? My understanding is that Document Library component is installed by default and no additional components are needed. On the setup there is two options to add "Server and client components for backward-compatible document libraries" or "client components". I don't need backward compatibility and I have not installed them. Is there something else That I should do?     - Very slow response on first hit Hi, I've got a standard setup of SPS on Win2003. When I hit a site for the first time after an hours or two (e.g. after lunch) the requested page takes 40-50 seconds to render. After that, the site reposnds in sub second times. I assume IIS or SPS is timeing out and recycling. Can I increase this time to 3 or 4 hours to allow users to have fast response times and mitigate the risk of performance related helpdesk calls?     - Problems with search Hi *, we were having huge trouble with the index and search components of our SPS 2003 server (small farm scenario). The index service is running correctly now and has already crawled the portal content. When using the search (from portal home) the search result page only shows: "Your search encountered an error. If the problem persists, contact the portal site administrator." So, I'd like to know what kind of error has been encountered. The event protocol doesn't show any hints to the error either. Does anyone know, how I can reactivate the search? I thought of putting the search and index service to antoher machin temporarily and try it with such a scenario.     - Sps QueryService return Gibberish I am using the sps query service to get description (summary) of documents indexed by sps. The result i receive is encoded - so hebrew content appears as gibberish. In the past the same code worked fine. I tried to add the sps query service to the research pane of word2003. The results here were also encoded so i understand that the problem is in the server and not in my code. On the other hand the results in the search page of the portal appear fine.     - Problems with document collaboration I'm having issues trying to get document collaboration to work within Sharepoint Portal Server. I've created a document workspace on my Sharepoint site and added several documents. When I make a change to the document and then someone else goes in to access the same document from the document workspace the changes are not being reflected dynamically in their browser. Tried the following: 1) Clicking the Get Updates button in the Document Workspace window 2) Per a recommendation in Technet, made sure I have the document update component in Office 2003 installed locally 3) Enabled the relevant selections by clicking the Options button in the Document Workspace window to choose to receive all updates when they occur,etc Is there a Sharepoint permission that relates to seeing these types of updates occur? Also wanted to know if there is a way to see who is actively editing a document in a Document Workspace. In this case I don't mean who the document is checked out to but who actively has the document open since you can edit a document without having it checked out. Sharepoint reflects who is online who has access to the Document Workspace where the document resides but I don't see an option to reflect who are the individuals attempting to make changes to a specific document. Hi, friends, I've recently been given the task of administering an MS Sharepoint Portal Server (2001), and my boss has already given me an interesting task Categories by default are listed alphabetically, rather than functionally. For example, as a K-12 educational institution, we have the following three main categories: *Elementary *Middle School *High School As a result of auto-alphabetizing, however, the categoreis look like this: *Elementary *High School *Middle School See my issue? The same is true of documents. "Kindergarten" comes after "Elementary," for example. The boss has asked that I avoid "cheesy" solutions (such as using creative filesnames/titles like "1Elementary," "2Middle School," "3High School").     - Cannot Create Document Hello, I have installed SharePoint Portal 2.0 on Windows 2003 without any errors. I have created the portal and followed all the installation and configuration steps without any problems. However, when I go to document library (i.e. "Documents and Lists" or from mysite library) and click on create new document I get the following error: Error: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The document could not be created. The required application may not be installed properly, or the template for this document library cannot be opened. Please try the following: 1. Check the General Settings for this document library for the name of the template, and install the application necessary for opening the template. If the application was set to install on the first use, run the application and then try creating a new document again. 2. If you have permission to modify this document library, go to General Settings for the library and configure a new template. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Additional info: - I'm a domain/portal administrator and I have all the rights. - I tried to follow the SPP Administration manual but the "Configure document libraries" under "Component Configuration" section does not exist. - I don't need back-compatible document management component and I didn't install it. Users get confirmation emails for successfully setting up the immediate alerts for TASK lists, but they do not get any immediate email alerts from SharePoint Portal Sever 2003 for any newly created or modified items in task lists.     - Sharepoint Portal with Non-Sharepoint Websites I'm very new to the Sharepoint products. I've been asked to add a new non-sharepoint website to a server which has sharepoint portal server installed under the IIS6 Default Web Site (which uses TCP port 80). When I try to create a Virtual Directory under the Default Web Site (as I normally would) the directory is created as a Sharepoint directory. When I attempt to access the Login (any) page from the site I get the following message: Unable to connect to database. Check database connection information and make sure the database server is running. I've restarted the SQL Server with no change (I get the same message). The non-sharepoint website works fine when deployed to a non-sharepoint server (but I need to have to hosted on the sharepoint server). I'm not sure how to proceed so... The problem is that the picture library has a "next x records" control at the bottom of each set, but there is no analogous "previous x records" control. Does anyone know how to do this? I cannot have them just use the navigation buttons on their browser, they may have opened a large number of the icons so they would have to navigate a long way before the change of page they are trying to do.     - Next / Previous Records Control in Picture Gallery Is there a way to get a "Previous x Records" control in a picture gallery? At the bottom of the gallery it shows a control (automatically) that says "Next 100 Records >" that you can click to get the next set of pictures, but there is no "<Previous 100 Records" control. There are approximately 1500 pictures in the library and it is hard to get around in without being able to navigate backward. Since the users on this portal site tend to open and interact with the entires in the pages as they go through the gallery (it is a list of icons that we are using in software development) it is not a good option to have the users use the back control from Internet explorer because they may have had twenty or more of the icons on the current screen open on the currently displayed set of records. There is a next set control there should be a way to get the previously displayed set... right? Does anyone know how to do this? I can bring up the URL and log into the site with no problems. Do I need to specify a login account? I have Sharepoint setup to prompt for a login when people bring up the site. After we changed the default URL of our portal from http://servername:8001
to the new url http://hostheader/ (so port 80 on server.ourdomain.be), the
indexing is VERY slow. The log is filled with timeout-warnings. I set the
timeout from the default 20 to 60.

How come it's that slow ?

When say that you changed the default URL of the portal, did you update the
default URL for the portal within Sharepoint as well?

On the portal root site, click on Site Settings -> SPS Central
Administration -> Configure alternate portal site URLs for intranet, extranet
and custom access -> Select the mapping for your portal -> Edit the Default
URL with your new setting

The server will use the default URL enter on this screen when crawling
content, and search results will use the default URL when no other access
mapping is available. This may explain what's happening.
