    - SPS backup of small farm We are trying to get spsbackup.exe to work in our small farm (1 server - SPS, 1 server - SQL). We are trying to save the backup files to the C drive on the SPS box. When I run the spsbackup GUI, I always get an error. When I check the error logs in SPS and on the SQL machine, the error is "Unknown user or bad password". The funny thing is that the _SERV seems to back up fine; but when it starts to backup the _SITE, I get the error. To me it seems that SQL does not have access to the SPS server.     - Editing Data in a View via Sharepoint Web Part Office Datasheet I am able to edit data in a SQL table via the Sharepoint Web Part "Office Datasheet". BUT when I try to edit data in a SQL view via the same Sharepoint Web Part "Office Datasheet" it does not let me edit the fields. I know the view allows edits to the data because I can do an update statement to the view in SQL.     - Creating an ASP.NET V2 web application using WSS Hello everyone i'm new to the sharepoint world but have good experience in .Net application. I'm studying a development of a web application which will be host on a SBS server with sql server 2005 and I would like to take advantage of WSS for file sharing, web parts, site templates, etc. As i understood WSS is also possible on SQL2005. I allready have a database like let say AdventureWork which is the main store of my application. My first question is how does the merging or relation between those two databases possible ? Can i merge the two easily? how are user rights and goups related? Is it possible to create web part using ASP.NET V2 using my custom tables and integrate easily in a WSS site. What is support for multi-language, how is it handled. And finally can i use some AJAX async controls (like the telerik suite) web parts (using WSS tables and my custom tables) If someone experienced could help me a bit in understanding all the bits and pieces it will be very appreciated.     - Priviliges in SPS do not work That is very strange. In my current installation it looks like any user has admin rights. I assign different groups to users (reader, contributor etc.) but there no differences. E.g. user with reader right currently can add document and e.g. reject document of other user (even with if the other has admin rights). Has I done somenthing wrong during the installation?     - Search Functiopn stopped working Hi, the Serach function on our Portal Site has stopped working (doesn't return any results) and I'm getting the following error messgae repeated in my App Event log: Event Type: Error Event Source: Microsoft SharePointPS Search Service Event Category: Gatherer Event ID: 3090 Date: 11/11/2005 Time: 10:27:05 User: N/A Computer:orgportal Description: The gatherer files from the previous checkpoint cannot be restored, and this action cannot be completed.     - Authenticate against AD Domain Group Hi! How can I verify users, if a sharpoint site's permissions are given for seperate AD domain groups and that user belongs to one of these groups. At the moment I can only get the username of the current logged in user. But since his permission (contributor) is given on the AD domain group I would like to see which AD domains groups this user belongs to and compare that to the sites domain groups. Like this 1. UserADGroups = SPUser.GetADGroups() 2. SiteGroups = SPSite.GetSiteGroups() 3. Compare UserADGroups with SiteGroups If the UserADGroup name is equal to SiteGroup return the permission of the sitegroup.     - sort by relevance not working Has anybody had any problems sorting by relevance? We had a portal 2001 and moved all the documents to portal 2003 - WSS sites. If we do one sort by "Audit" in the text search box and then pick a property "Author contains Tom". If we do this search in the 2001, it shows what we would expect to see. If we do this search in he 2003, we do NOT get the same results. The documents at the top (at least the first two - if not more - should be much lower down in the list). If we click 'Relevance' again it still shows things in the same order. When I hover the mouse over Relevance, I see the javascript link and one time it's 'asc' (ascending) and next time is 'desc' (descending) but it always shows items in the same order regardless of whether or not it is ascending or descending. Once I click Relevance it shows the up arrow (descending) and it never changes again no matter how many times I click 'Relevance'.     - SPS 2003 Install Problem We are trying to setup SPS 2003 on a Virtual Server pointed to a named instance on an active passive SQL Cluster. When we try to confirure the Single Sign-On Settings, we get an error that it cannot find the database server or permission problems when we go with a database that doesn't exist. I added a database shell, and when we try to use it, we get a warning that the Database already exists, would your like to override the configuration. If we say yes, we get a warning that the database already exists. This is confusing, if we try to have SPS create the database, it cannot find or connect to the server. If we create a shell, and all other varibles are the same, SPS can see it enough to prompt us that it exists, but we still fail. We have used the SQL Client Network Utility to point to the correct IP and Port. We can successfully connect with the credentials using ODBC. But we are hitting brick wall with this step.     - Portal Server Uninstall I had WSS 2.0 running on a server and installed Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 on top of it. Apparently that wasn't the correct way to install the Sharepoint Server... the directions said don't install on a server with WSS already installed without following some extra instructions that I, unfortunately didn't read. Now I can't access my old WSS sites I had created before I installed the Sharepoint Server. If I just do an uninstall of the Sharepoint Server, will it revert back to my old WSS 2.0 setup?     - Restore SharePoint Server backup to New Server Hello everyone, I am having a problem while restoring the backup from old server to a new server (with different Names). I tried it with MDF & LDF and could able to take backup from old server and restoring it to a new server but not able to open the site. When I see the tables in the Database I am finding my old server URLs. I even tried with SPS backup and restore utility with that utility also I could able to backup but not able to restore and its throwing any error that I version is different but when I see that its one that and same only. Can you please help me how to restore SPS & WSS Backup to another Server with different name... or do we need to keep the same name by keeping old server offline and connecting the new server to the domain. Basically we are planning to change the server because my current SPS server is having hardware problem and now we have got new server so I am planning to change the server by taking the backup from the Old Server and to new server.     - Frontpage dataviews timing out and requiring an IISRESET Hey, I have a server with WSS sites, and I am using frontpage dataview to display form libraries. recently, the dataview have started showing "The web part has timed out" when people go to the page. an IISRESET command on the server solves it, but only for a few hours. I have tested, and when the problem was active, before doing an IISRESET I added another dataview (to a different page and to the same page - made sure the problem is in all the pages) and while in frontpage everything looked ok, in the page it said "Unable to display this Web Part". again, IISRESET solves that as well. Seeing as we cant have a server that does iisreset every half an hour just to be sure that a single web part is working, and if you take into account that I changed the timeout values in the web.config files, what else can I do?     - Cannot get to Central Administration I just installed a new instance of sharepoint 2003 i did the install without the database engine, because i want to use the full version of sql for scalability. right now, i cannot get into the sharepoint central administration page, i keeps prompting me for credentials, which i enter and i get a "you are not authorized to view this page" error, for grins i turned anonymous access on and i get a "page cannot be displayed" error. i am accessing it by both "browing" the site in IIS and going to the sharepoint central administration program. i checked the application pool and i'm ok, i go ot the port and its referencing the right port from what i can tell. i am an admin on the box, the services are set to start under my credentials, as well i have the proper access in sql, though there is no instance of a sql database yet, i haven't been able to create the portal.     - Setting Alerts on Dataview Parts I have master list Calendars and News sections. Based on some selections, the item will post in the master and be displayed elsewhere in the portal through dataviews created wtih frontpage. When a user set's up an alert for area changes that contain the dataview, an alert is never triggered when a new item is populated. The alerts are only working when setup on the master list. Not the sub area pulling the same data through dataview parts. The new item does come through with the dataview part, and other page changes are discovered by the Alert.     - Deploying WSS and SPS together Hi everyone. Apologies for the cross-post, but I didn't know which group to post to. I am trying to understand the licensing implications of a deployment. What I would like to do is deploy WSS+SPS on the same server and expose both to the internet. I would like to create an unauthenticated WSS site for general consumption and then have a collection of sites that require authentication and utilize SPS. I would love to avoid incurring the extra licensing costs for SPS for the unauthenticated site by *not* exposing any SPS functionality, I would like to avoid building a home-grown website for the external folks in lieu of the above, and I would like to avoid buying more hardware to ensure that the two are more segmented. The latter would actually be nice for fault tolerance/availability, but that really isn't a problem for this particular site (right now). I have read the licensing information on both microsoft.com and the MS partner site as well as in the Sharepoint Resource Kit (mspress), but there wasn't anything (in my understanding) that explicitly explained the situation. I think I understand most of the licensing implications of each of WSS and SPS in isolation. That is all very clear from the documentation. I am just wondering about this specific case. When I finished all installation steps and not chose to install desktop engine, after installation and creating config. database and other initially required settings, when I wanted to create a new portal site, I got the error on the create new portal sit epage which said: "SPS has discovered that you have front page 2002 or windows sharepoint team services installed on ur virtual server.     - Access Profiles through Contact List Hello, We are currently synchronizing SharePoint PS 2003 profiles with Active Directory. To avoid maintaining double data stores we are looking at migrating our (simple) personnel database into Active Directory and then let users access subsets of the data through Contact List web parts in SharePoint. However, we are unable to find any way of performing the (presumably) simple task of linking a Contact List (or another suitable web part) with the "profile store" or "people data source".     - Sharepoint losing docs I have a sharepoint site which is losing documents when asked everyone claims not to have deleted the file, I believe them but have not ruled out user error, I restore the file from backup and everything is fine for a few days then it goes again. some facts the folder is our health and safety folder, it contains a folder for each company in the groups containing numerous health and safety details, the document which is vanishing each time is the health and safety policy its a word doc, but not just in one company folder. all company folders lose the doc and the doc is different for each company not linked in anyway other than being the same type of doc in each folder. I have tried re creating a blank word doc, copying and pasting the contenets and then saving as a new name, I have completely removed the health and safety site, and then reposted it, this did solve the problem for a month or so. finally I have the sharepoint doc recovery V 1.0.2 app from http://www.sharepoint-france.com by stephane cordonnier, it shows the site fine but I cannot expand the shared docs folder, on searching other folders in my site I have noticed that some sites have the same problem but no document loss, as far as I can tell. question 1, is there a way to monitor the folders to see who is doing what in each folder? question 2, the folder contains numerous files, but it is always the same file which gets zapped, this file does have password protection for editing, so it is read only forced by word is this an issue?     - problems with access to SPS portal Hi, I'm having problem with SPS login. We have two SPS portal on the same server in the intranet: one on port 90 and one on port 80. IIS uses integrated authentication for both virtual servers. There is a user that has access to both SPS portal. If he tries to access the portal on port 90 it's all OK (no pop up for credentials because he is logged on the client machine with the right credentials). If in the same browser windows he tries to access the portal on port 80 it's also OK. The problem is if he tries to access first the portal on port 80: he is prompted for credentials, he inserts them and access to the portal.... but the credentials are the same he has used for login in the client machine! Also if he submits empty credentials (click OK in the pop up without insert any credentials) he has access to the portal! I think is a client settings problem because other users access to portal without they were prompted for credentials.     - Auto populate Fields In Sharepoint I would like every user to be able to open "My Site" and see their own calendar and inbox - I can configure these manaully but would like to automate the process by setting it up as a template. Constants like the exchange server name are okay for every user but I cannot populate the "Mailbox" field with %username% or any other variables I've tried. Is there a way to apply a null filter against a filed type of "multiples
line of text". I simply want to show only those rows where this field is
empty.

Could you use a calculated field to find the length of the field, then
filter for when it is 0.

Hi Steven,
A calculated field doesn't list the field "multiple lines of text" to allow
me select it. Also, how what function does WSS allow to calculate lenght of a
field.
