    - Re-post from Excel forum: You may want to read from the bottom up. Basically, I just got XP yesterday in order to have full sharepoint functionality. I'm a beta user at my company. They plan to upgrade the whole company this year. The very first thing I tried to do I had complications. I'm not sure why. I exported a list from Sharepoint into Excel. I don't remember how, but I unlinked the spreadsheet and am working from it on my desktop. I can't get the "subtotal" feature, or outline feature to work. It is greyed out. Below are all the things I've tried so far at the suggestion of the Excel help group. Please advise. I checked permissions under the "File" menu, the menue item that says "Permission" is selected and from there there is an orange box with a checkmark by "unrestricted access". But I just found protection under the toolbar. I can't figure out how to deselect the options that are checked and I don't know how they got checked. Is it something to do with the process in exporting it from a sharepoint list? The options checked are as follows: Under protect sheet the "protect worksheet and contents of locked cells is checked. This is true whether it is a newly created workbook or the original one I exported. Under "allow users of worksheet to" box the only two things checked are "select locked cells and select unlocked cells. I don't know the password since I didn't do this, I tried my password from my network login and unchecked the protect worksheet box at the top and it didn't let me check "ok" just cancel. I tried creating a new workbook, file name is "book5" with no indication of sharing in the title. The protection attempts reacted a little different. I selected unprotect sheet and typed in my current network password (not knowing what else to try), it let me hit ok in this case. But, it still did not give me the ability to select the subtotal feature. I also tried to reset the toolbar as follows: Rightclicked the toolbar, hit the customize button, selected toolbar tab, the "worksheet menue bar" was already checked. I clicked on it to highlight. Then hit "reset" and ok on the dialog box that popped up. Then I closed the customize window. Went to the Data menu, and subtotal was still grey. The only thing that looks kind of strange, and maybe this is new to this Excel version...I've never noticed the blue asterik in column A in the row under my last row of data. Is this any indication of something strange? Do I need to move these questions to a forum for Sharepoint? do you think it is an Excel issue or a sharepoint issue?     - share point and active directory I just installed and configured share point 2003 on windows 2003 server and exchange 2003. I have several users in the office that use windows XP and 2000 professional. I have two questions: 1. Logon to share point differs from 2000 professional and XP users. XP users can logon in the user@domain.com format while 2000 professional users must logon in the domain.com\username format. How can I unify that where everybody logon in the same format (user@domain.com). 2. How can I make sharepoint synchronize their user database with AD. Meaning that sharepoint gets user info from AD. 3. Is there a way to logon to sharepoint automatically once the user logon to the workstation. Example is when a user logon to the workstation with their AD user name and they go to the sharepoint web site, I want them not to logon automatically using their windows logon. Is that possible. 4. Every time someone opens a document in sharepoint, it ask them for username name and password even though they already logged on before. When they enter their user name and password, it opens the document but when they try to open another document, it ask them again for user name and password. Is there a solution to that?     - Rename a team site? Is there a way to rename a Team site that is under the Sites directory for SPS2003? I named a site http://portal/sites/sorbanes-oxley and it needs to be changed to http://portal/sites/sarbanes-oxley. Creating a template doesn't work in this case only for subsites. I created a template and tried to create a new site from it but the template wasn't listed. when I created a sub site I was allowed to use the template bu this does me no good.     - Version Control question I wanted to post a question to see if I understand version control correctly. When you delete a document from a document library it deletes all the old versions as well? When you delete a document in a document library with version control turned on is there any way to save the old versions or access the old versions? We have a high security doc library but we don't want people to be able to accidentally delete an item and us not have backup. I understand that we can use security to keep people from deleting but some specific people need that function. We just want to protect ourselves in case we need access to it again or accidentally deleted it.     - Mass upgrades to list definitions across multiple sites - Tools wanted We will regularly need to deploy list customisations to lists in multiple existing workspaces as part of a highly iterative development of a SharePoint based contact management solution. Are there any tools that support the automated synchronisation/updating of list definitions with an authoritative list definition? There is plenty of guidance on up-front customisation but I have found none on mass customisation of live sites.     - Access Denied over SSL I have an SPS 2001 server setup, and working exactly as it should, from both the internal network and the internet, over HTTP. However, I don't want it running over HTTP, I need it to run over SSL. I've performed all of the required configuration, and SPS now works both internally and externally over SPS - with one big problem. Anytime I try to add a new document, create a sub folder, view a document's history, or perform any action other than viewing existing documents, I get the following error message: "Access Denied - You do not have permission to access this item." This happens both internally and externally, using the IP, hostname or FQDN of the server. I can perform of these actions over SSL using Web Folders no problem, but they just will not work using the browser interface. The server is running using NTLM authentication, although I've tried it with Basic, and it still didn't work. All of the required permissions are configured correcly.     - Urgent- Can't browse the portal I had a SharePoint portal working fine for more than one month , I didn't add any web part or change the content of the portal, I just restart the machine after the restarting I got the error the following error: "An unexpected error has occurred." with link to web parts Maintenance Page. Once I click on the web parts Maintenance Page link I got "Array can't be null, Parameter name: source". I tried to open the site in FrontPage, I got "Error rendering web part" instead of the SPSHeader web part content which is MY Site , Site Setting and Help and "The area doesn't exist" instead of links to the portal areas. I tried to browse sub sites it was working fine. I also tried twice to create new portals but the operations failed when the portal start creating the portal areas. I restarted IIS , the services and even the PC but no luck to make it work. I removed the SharePoint and reinstalled it , then I restored the postal , I got the same error once I try to restore the same portal. I disconnected the config DB and created new one, then I tried to create a new portal , the operation completed successfully this time. "But Still I could not restore that portal ".     - Archiving/deleting content automatically & exporting I am currently assessing SPS for use in our organisation mainly as a discussion forum. We are looking for something with an automated system for either archiving or deleting discussion content at a specified age so that only current discussions are available for general view. (several of our discussion groups require comment within a given time frame & must block comments after that.) Less importantly, we'd like to secure the archives so that only certain people can access them.     - Web Capture Server User Account This is a very useful web part and works for us if set to client, but I'd like to run it in the server, not client context. Whenever I do though, it displays a 'timed out' message. I'm guessing that the account used to access our firewall is no authenticating through the proxy. What account is being used?     - SP Server Data View Error in FP 2003 When Saving--Please Help Hi, I'm trying to insert a data view for an SQL DB onto a Sharepoint page. I can add the data source to the data catalog in FP2003 just fine. I can drag the data source onto a web part zone and it displays without error. I then click the save icon in FP2003, view the page in Sharepoint, and all is well and happy. I then go into the style properties of the data view, and add the toolbar, group, and sort options. It displays the changes in FP2003. I then click the save icon and I get "server error: The URL 'default.aspx' is invalid. Either it has been changed or moved...". I get the same result if I try to add any conditional formatting. This issue doesn't seem to affect data views I add from xml sources, only our SQL DB data sources. It isn't FP2003 because I've testes from multiple computers. Any idea on a fix or workaround? Much appreciated, Jason Basically, it will let me create and add data views off SQL DB's to sharepoint just fine, but if I try and add any formatting or toolbars, It gives me that server error.     - Listing's and Links List I am looking for a way to display a list of links across all areas and sub areas of our portal. I would like this list to show in new Areas without having to create new listings or a new Links list. Some observations I have made that lead me to believe that this cannot happen. - If you create a listing and then create a new area the listing will not show in the new area unless you recreate the listing and add all the areas including the new one or create a new listing for the new area with the same info as the original listing. - If you make a change to a listing that was created in more than one area the change doesn't propogate to the listing in the other areas. - If you add links to a Links list in an area that Links list will show up as a webpart that can be added to the area in which the Links list exists but not any other areas. I would like to be able to create a Links list in the Home area and add the webpart to other areas so that it shows all the links in the Links list that exists in the Home area. I would also like any additions to that list to show up in the Links list webpart in the other areas. There doesn't seem to be a dynamic connection. Basically I want a dynamic way to maintain a list of links where I can add and remove links and have the changes replicated across all instances of a Link list. Am I wrong?     - Documents not being stripped out of search if user lacks security permissions. Hi, I've been tasked to research this problem. I can search from the SPS home page as just a reader with no permissions to a WSS site, and the search results will still show that site. If I click on the link, it will pop up a security box for typing in my username, domain, password. With the permissions I'm using, it will not let me in. So, I've read in this group where Sharepoint is supposed to strip out results that the user does not have permission to see. This functionality is currently not working.     - Domain Account Mode on SPS and domain controllers Hi, I am using SPS on a win2k3 box that is situated outside of my corporate lan. My corporate LAN holds most (but not all) of my users (these users are company employees.) In addition to these users I wish to add about 200+ clients so that they can use SPS as an extranet. As far as I am aware "Domain Account Mode" is the only mode availible for SPS. I am a little wary of adding these new (extranet users) to my corporate LAN's Active Directory. I thought than I would add them to the win2k3 box that hosts sharepoint in my DMZ. However I am unsure of how I achieve this. Should I 1. Simply add the Extranet Users as local users to my win2k3 box -- then sharepoint will have to be aware of my local users AND the users in my Corporate LAN - I am unsure if this arrangement is possible. 2. Elevate the Win2k3 box in my DMZ to a domain controller, thus providing a brand new domain in my DMZ, which will be made up of only a single box (also running SPS although NOT SQL or exchange) and then set up some sort of forest arrangement / trust relationship between the new domain in the DMZ and my corporate LAN (as I assume IIS integrated authentication will have to look up both Internal and extranet users.) This last point I am leaning towards, however it brings up another point. Can I use SPS on a box that is a domain controller?? -- Does this pose a securiity risk?? Please note that SQL SERVER will not be on the same box as sharepoint (Sharepoiint will be on a single domain controller in the DMZ), but (SQL SERVER) will be on another box INSIDE my corporate LAN (so I guess I will have to set up some form of trust relationship so trusted authentication will work.) At present I am not linking into MS exchange, although I do have an exchange server inside my corporate LAN which I might like to uses at some point.     - Computer name change reconnect to config DB? I changed the name of the computer name in my Virtual PC instance. The Sharepoint Central Administation can not connect to the config DB. After the fact I saw the KB article on how to change the name with a backup and restore. I checked registry entries and configuration files in program files without any luck. I looked at the Servers table in the SPS config DB and it has the correct name for my server. I didn't see any other references to the old server name except in the last server modified columns. Is there a way to reconnect the SPS to the config DB on this virtual server? Any suggestions? I do have the VHD file backup prior to the chnge, but I have already fixed Commerce Sever 2002 for the name change. I really would like to avoid starting over with the name change.     - How to remove admin permissions? We have a small firm, where a lot of "jobs" overlap. So, we have a fair amount of administrators for a couple of systems. One of those is our SPS server. All of the resources I've seen so far state that "Local Administrators" has administrative access to all SPS resources, regardless of the SPS Administrative Group settings. How can I remove this?     - Search Results Missing I have recently tried to modify the Search.aspx page in VS.net by opening it like Frontpage would. I made a copy of the code as it appeared when i first opened the file, then made my changes. After I realized my changes were not working, I reverted back to the original code and saved the file again. Only this time there was a problem... I had run a number of searches before and returned results fine, however, now even with the original code, none of the results want to show up. The search results page loads without any errors, however there are just no results, and no message saying that there are no results.     - deleting extended server Hi, Just checking... I extended a virtual server using sharepoint central administration. It turns out that wasn't exactly what I wanted. Is it safe for me to delete that site in IIS administrator (this is on a windows 2003 server with IIS6). I don't want the site or anything that is in it, and I need to create a site with the same name as the one I want to delete, after I've deleted it. Hello there,
When one of my users click on "Change Setting" link in the Actions menu
in a particular subarea, he gets "File not found" message.

Portal Structure:
Topics->Projects->Project1->Project11

Project111 and Project222 are subareas under Project11.

This particular user has administrative access only from "Project11"
hierarchy( Project11 area and all subareas under Project11).

When user clicks on "Change Settings" link in Project11 area he gets
this "File not found" message, whereas not in Project111 and Project222
subareas(when clicked on Change setting link).
Actually the corresponding file "SPEditCategory.aspx" is located in
"_layouts/1033/" virtual folder in IIS.

Why do the user gets this error message? If he gets in one area, he
should be getting in all areas and subareas, right?
Infact all the users should be getting this message, right?

When I access my area, I am able to get to the SPEditCategory.aspx
page.

Could someone please explain, what could be causing this issue.
