Hello,

I am trying to re-install Windows SharePoint Services 3 onto a Windows
Server 2003 SP1 machine. It goes through the install and then while it is
configuring, it quits after step 5 with these errors:

- Failed to register SharePoint Services

- Could not access the Search Service configuration database

- An exception of type system.runtime.interopservices.comexeption was
thrown.

I had this error once before, so I did a complete re-install of Windows
Server 2003 , asp.net, and SharePoint Services 3, and all worked fine. I am
trying to avoid the complete re-install of the O/S. I believe it is related
to permissions somewhere, but have tried articles 899965 and 909444 with no
success. At this point, it looks like another re-install would be quicker,
but I would like to resolve this by finding out why and correcting the
issue.

Thanks in advance,

James

I have found that if I back out everything listed in Control Panel / Add or
Remove programs .. (including both .NET framework 3.0 and 2.0) and then
re-boot before going through the entire WSS 3.0 installation process again
(including checking that application server role is still there and
installing .NET Framework 3.0 (but not 2.0), it works.

Maybe you didn't remove enough of the old configuration before
re-installing.

(Of course given time I'd re-format and re-install the OS too but I've done
the above several times and it's led to a working WSS 3.0 system every
time.)
