    - WSS 2 Best Practice? Hi There We have a customer who wants to use a mini portal for their customers (small amount of customers - maximum of 15). Basically each customer will have a useraccount setup for them (i.e docserver\clientname) and the will go directly to the server over the internet. (i.e. www.mydocserver.com) They want a single point of sign on and then they have an existing web based app (as a page viewer web part) which will use the current users credentials to filter which documents to show. The reason for the use of WSS is the news, discussions, default documents and for a constant look and feel. They dont want the users to be able to modify the site (reader only). So.. I think WSS would be the idea solution to achieve this - with just the default site (no need for subsites atm) Just before I get around to setting everything up..     - I takes more than 1 minute to save a document on SPS (and more)!!! Hi everybody, on my clients (all winXP Pro and Office XP) it takes more than one minute to open the profile form and save a document into SPS. Matter of facts, sometime it takes only a couple of seconds, but this happens only when the profile form doesn't appear and I don't know why: I've only noticed that when the profile form doesn't appear I can't connect to SPS using http://server/workspace. The easiest way to make it run is opening the SPS workspace homepage on the server. After this, the client can connect to SPS and the profile form appears, but it takes soooo long!     - Bind search scope to a particular content index / portal I have installed SPSv2 TR on a stand alone server (running SQL server std edition). My configuration includes three (3) instances of SPS - the default installation plus two (2) virtual servers. What I want to achieve with the search scope is to allow each portal to search its own content and to configure one of the instances e.g. the default instance to search its own content as well as all three instances. This will allow users to search across all three instances of SPSv2 providing a consolidated search results from a single designated portal site. "All sources" does return results from the other portals. I have managed to create a new search scope which also returns very similar results from the other portals as well.     - SPS 2001 problems (Access denied/Permission denied and SPS Administration) Hi, I hope that some one out there can help me solve these issues. We are running SPS 2001 (SP1 upgraded to SP2a while these problems has been present). Issue 1: In the "SharePoint Portal Server Administration" console, we always get a "Unable to open the SharePoint Portal Server named '[servername]'" error... I have read KB 291592 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- us;291592), but the setup on the server is already like described in the KB. Issue 2: In one of out three SPS environments (development, test and production) we've begun to experience "Script execution error: Permission denied" and "Script excution error: Access denied" errors in web parts where we search through folders that not all our users has access to... Eg. lets say we have a web part where we search for the 5 newest documents from \documents\users\ and 5 newest from \documents\management\, the five newest documents from \documents\management\ should only be listed if the current user is in a management role, the "Management" role has reader rights on \documents\management\ and reader rights on \documents\users\, while the users role only has reader rights on \documents\users and no rights on \documents\management\ This problem was found after the server was rebooted!     - SPS v2 and Exchange 2003 server, login troubles We have a network with 4 servers, 1 isa server, 1 Sps server, 1 exchange server and 1 application server. All the servers are on the same domain and have one active directory. The Sps server and the Exchange server are domain controllers. When i login from the internet to the Sps server, i must type my username and password. When i want to go from Sps to exchange by clicking a link, i must again logon, but now to the Exchange server. This must go automatically because the hang on the same domain and active directory. Maybe is something miss configured in the IIS. Does anybody know what maybe the problem can be....     - dumb question Can a link in sharepoint be used to lanch an non-web based application? Something word, excel, custom programs, etc? I am considering using sharepoint to create a portal on about 10 desktops that provides a navigational tool to a bunch of software programs and files throughout the network. This would allow a user to call up the navigational portal and quickly find the programs according to how layout in sharepoint. (Very important) Hi to evberybody, I would want to subject to you some curious errors that take place in the daily use of SPS 2001 (SP2): Configuration of net: 1) ISA server before SPS server 2) On server SPS does not turn any other applications 3) Customers qualifies you to the access of the portal defined in Windows 2000 of SPS server 4) 1 Coordinator (Administrator) - 2 Authors - N Readers Problems: 1) Some times succeed that the documents "depublish" alone and therefore some times are not more visible from the customers 2) Some timest the two authors are not in a position to publishing new documents 3) Some times the customers, and not always the same ones, do not succeed to approach the portal why it does not come recognized the password of access. I hope that someone can gives to me to an indication or some information in order to comprise these errors more better and eventually to resolve the problems.     - Central administration security problem Hi After having installed sharepoint 2003 TR without MSDE option the Central administration page trys to load and asks for username/password. The user created to administer the site (part of power users group) is rejected, even the Administrator login is rejected and is unable to load the page. The install worked without a problem although to get the sharepoint central administration site working in IIS (originally stopped), the application pool had to be set to CentralAdminAppPool before the site would start.     - Installing Brightwork destroys SPS2003 portal I have a client who installed 3rd-party workflow solution Brightwork (brightwork.com) on top of SPS 2003. It's an add-on to SPS 2001, but the vendor sent the customer instructions on how to install Brightwork with SPS 2003. It involves, among other things, installing the backwards-compatible libraries. After the client installed Brightwork, however, the homepage of the portal was 404. Many people have tried many fixes to recover the documents that were in the portal (uninstalling Brightwork, recreating the portal, re-extending the virutal server, attaching the site databases to a new portal, etc.) with no luck.     - Survey Limits I work for a company that's using Sharepoint Survey extensively. We've run into a couple of frustrating snags I hope someone can help me out with. First, we hit a limit with the number of types of surveys we can create. By this I mean we can only create so many Yes/No or Single Line questions before it tells us we can't create anymore. Is there a way around this? Also, is there a way to have Sharepoint number the questions? With surveys at 300+ questions long, having them numbered would help a great deal. I need a way to (as an Administrator) allow users of role A to view a page or webpart, but deny users of role B to see the page or part. Can anyone point me to a document on this?     - Unpublishing a document We are currently using SPS 2001 SP2. If I publish a document, then decide that I no longer want it published, but I will still need the document for later use, does anyone know of a way to unpublish a document? We are currently moving the documents to another server, deleting it from the SPS, then moving them back and not publishing them. I would think there would be a much easier way to unpublish a document and still have it available to work with, but not be available to any that does not have author or coordinator permissions.     - SPS 2001 SP1 - Error - Virtual Memory to run Exchange Server is Fragmented Hello, I have seen other posts for this problem but noone seems to have an answer. I'm getting messages in my Event Viewer Application Log that states "The vitual memory necessary to run your Exchange server is fragmented in such a way that normal operation may begin to fail. It is highly recommended that you restart all Exchange services to correct this issue." I am running SPS 2001 SP1. Due to some of our customizations we have been unable to upgrade to SP2 without fear that everything will be broken. I have the server on a reboot schedule and it reboots nightly. This error occurs pretty much once every hour on the hour from the time that the server is rebooted. What I am trying to figure out is: 1) What is the fix for Sharepoint Portal to get this to stop? I have seen posts but the fixes are for Exchange Server not Sharepoint. 2) If there really isn't a fix, is this anything that I need to be concerned about? I appreaciate any help!     - Best bets for external indexed content Hi I need to assign best bets for the content (web-pages) indexed in a content source by SPS. For assigning a category, we can map the "urn:schemas- microsoft-com:publishing:Categories" WebDAV field to a HTML meta tag because the Categories field is present in the base document profile. But the "BestBets" property is not present in any document profile. Is there any way that the "BestBets" WebDAV property can be added as a user property to the Document profile for my requirement to be satisfied ?     - DW20.EXE More and more often I'm seeing the DW20.exe running on my machine. This is my configuration: 1 machine - domain controller, running SPS (v2), Office 2003, SQL Server and so on. I've discovered this application is some sort of reporting tool used by microsoft with Office 2003 (http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/xp/beta/five/ch19/MntB02.htm). When it runs it can take up to 250 megs of memory and consumes all my CPU cycles. A couple of questions - 1. Why is this running (something is obviously going wrong for it to want to report something)? 2.     - Trying to Open PowerPoint Files on V1 I cannot open PowerPoint files from my document library through our extranet configuration (http://server.domain.com or https://server.domain.com) - I receive a cannot find server error. I can open Word, Excel, and PDF files in the same directory through this connection. I can even download the PowerPoint files to my local computer - it just won't allow me to open or view them through my browser. If I access the same document library through an internal connection (http://servername/workspace/...) I can view PowerPoint files using my browser.     - Issues with templates...error "Cannot Render Web Part" When creating a new site based on a previously saved template, we are having issues with certain list web parts displaying improperly. Many of the web parts display the error "Cannot Render Web Part" in the newly created site. When viewing the web part code, we are seeing that some references are pointing to the site that was used to create the template instead of the newly created site. In addition, if we open one of the pages of the new site in Frontpage 2003, we can delete the offending web parts and drag and drop new ones in their place which function fine. It seems as if some reference is being lost during the creation of the new list. The site that was used to create the template is functioning properly throughout. Any ideas???? I have read that SharePoint services is the vehicle I need to get me there.     - Login problem I approx 100 users on sharepoint on a daily basis, however one of these users continually gets a login prompt every time he tries to access sharepoint. No username or password will work, including those of other users. I have even tried removing and recreating his user and sharepoint rights and both to no avail. Maybe I made a backup using "msdmback /b ~" by scheduled
task then the modified date of all document was changed to
the backup date.

How can I make not to change the modified date after
backup?
