Hi people,
I have following questions regarding document library in SPS 2003 with SQL
2005 setup -
1. What is difference between web based storage and sql based document
library?
2. What is mean by backward compatible document library ?

It would be great help if any one of you sps experts help me to get these
details.

Thanks,
bobi

2. If you had SPS 2001 and wanted to retain your data from that you needed
to install SPS 2003 to include backward compatible document libraries (i.e.
compatible with those from SPS 2001). If you aren't moving from SPS 2001 you
don't need this function at all and it is best not to install it.

1b. All document libraries in a standard SPS 2003 installation are store in
SQL Server.

1. You can store literally anything in web based storage. Document
libraries, on the other hand, are meant for storing documents. These can be
any type of documents like .doc, .pdf, .txt, .htm, .zip etc. That does not
mean that you can not store other files in document libraries. You can store
other files as well but remember, document libraries are not meant to be
used as storage system like commercially available *web based storage*
systems.

2. These are libraries that are compatible with older version (version 2001)

Hi SSA and Engelbert,
Thanks a lot for all your reply and efforts.

Still I have few more questions -
1. If I do not install any backward compatibility components, then whenever
I upload the document on the portal site, SPS will save it in SQL DB, is it
correct?

2. How to backup the BCDL and SQL based document library?

3. Can I move all my documents from backward compatibility document library
(Web Storage) to SQL based library any time?

Please let me konw your views.

Thanks,
-bobi

Hi SSA, Thanks again for your reply.

I do have few more questions -

1. Can we have any standard url as we have in case of BCDL same in case of
SQL based document library?

2. How to take backup of individual site in SPS using script or command?

3. What is mean by top level site, which we create from WSS options, is it
something above SPS portal, if not then why do we need it?

4. Can we create sub sites of top level site or portal of SPS?

5. What is difference between top level site and portal ?

So many questions... lol.. Ahmad bhai... I know you will answer them...
thanks in advance...

1. You have URLs that point to the individual documents.
2. You can use smigrate.exe. If you don't know how to use it, you can use
Frontpage to take back up of individual sites. It's easy. See following
posts:

http://www.sharepointblogs.com/ssa/archive/2006/05/09/6559.aspx
http://www.sharepointblogs.com/ssa/archive/2006/06/14/8357.aspx

3. Top level site is the main site that is accessible without specifying a
page name or subsite. Just write URL of your server in the browser's address
bar and click Ok. It is part of the portal. You can create subsites under
the top level site. Each virtual web server that is configured on the web
server contains one top level site.

4. Yes

5. Top level site defined above! You can configure only one portal site for
each end user IIS virtual web server. Portal site corresponds to the top
level site. Portal is one area where you can build team sites and manage
integrated solutions.

Hope this helps!

Hi SSA, glad to see your response.

But tell me if I can have portal created using S Portal Server, then why do
I need top level site to be created using WSS, and as I can create sub sites
of portal, then why should I create sub sites of the top level site?

Please let me know your views..

I am using the Object Model of Sharepoint 2003, I want to know which are the
namespaces/classes used
to Upload and Retrieve documents in Sharepoint Object Model.
