    - surveys: more than 16 columns of the same field type Hi All, I want to create a large survey with more than 16 questions of the same type. If I try this the server gives me an error message about the limit of 16 columns. Does anybody know how to solve this issue? Do I can extend the special kind of list? Thx a lot in advance.     - User cannot be found Hello, Perhaps this is a known problem, but I didn't found the right solution on Internet. We used first Windows Sharepoint Services. After this we installed Windows Sharepoint Portal Server. Both are running with SP2. We've done the installation in october last year and everything was working fine. The part on Sharepoint Services is still used and wasn't migrated into Sharepoint Portal Server. Now the problem that we have, is that on some subsites on sharepoint Services, when I try to access it I have the following error in IE: User cannot be found . I've got no errors in the Eventviewer. Microsoft send me an link to download the patch mentionned in article 890630. But this patch is for an SP1 installation.     - Log In problem as administrator Ok heres whats troubling me: Clicking a portal site in the Manage Portal Sites under Sharepoint Portal Server Central Admin would not allow me to view the page even if I used the administrator account when that login window appears, I get that "You are not authorized to view this page" error, but the funny thing is when I click the "Manage Portal Site Properties" of the site, the page would redirect me to the site settings of the portal site I want to login.     - Word 2003 documents says "write protected" when its not I have a problem with the "status" of Word 2003 documents when opened from a SPS2003 server. When I left-click on the link and open the document it says that it is write protected in the titlebar when I know it's not as I can save changes and nobody else has the document opened. When I right-click besides the document and choose "Edit with Microsoft Word" from the menu it opens without saying its write protected.     - Is there a way to auto configure the My Inbox Web Part for users? I am looking for a way to have it so when users log on for the first time it automatically puts in the mail server and the user name and such. Has any one successfully done this?     - cannot upload files larger than 50MB I'm getting an error message: "The form submission cannot be processed because it exceeded the maximum length allowed by the Web administrator. Please resubmit the form with less data". I found a solution in the article ID: 822059 and increased the size of the allowed size of uploadable files in 2 web.config files: c:\inetpub\wwwroot c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\60\config and I still can't upload files over 50MB in size. There are 7 more web.config files on the server running SPS but I only changed that size in the 2 mentioned files since <httpRuntime maxRequestLength="51200" /> was only in these two files.     - MSSharePointPortalAppPool suffered a fatal communication error "A process serving application pool 'MSSharePointPortalAppPool' suffered a fatal communication error with the World Wide Web Publishing Service.     - Alerts on Home Page We have alerts enabled for our SharePoint website but the Action does not seem to be available on the Home Page. Is there some other setting I need to change to enable the Alert Action on the Home Page? Alert Action is available if accessing the Lists and Document Libraries on the Home page but a user would have to go into each and every section to set it up. Any help is appreciated.     - Site Administration Question We have a Sharepoint Portal Server (medium farm actually) and our regular administrator is out of the country and unavailable for three weeks. I have a request to create some sites but I can't figure out how she's created those that already exist so that I can duplicate them. These particular sites exist here: http://<servername>/sites/<our sites>/default.aspx I've found out how to create subsites to those we already have but I can't figure out how to create a site at the same level of those that already exist.     - Server2k3, IIS, SPS Installation broken. I am having some serious trouble getting new Sharepoint Portal Server installation working. I found a MS help and support site (not realizing it was MS Indonesia) and they started helping me until they realized I was not in their system and needed to buy support. Here's the deal. I recently upgraded to Windows Server 2003 Standard from 2k Standard. I had IIS 6 already on the system, but had disabled it because I needed an apache server to run on here. Well, now I've re-enabled the IIS and installed SPS which during install did not give me an option to choose to use a database type or not..it was just grayed out and not selectable. I have installed SQL Server 2000 SP3 and figured that this is why it didn't give me the option.. Anyway, at the end of the installation where it said it was done successfully, it said it was taking me to a page to configure some kind of database connectivity. Well when the page loaded it came up with a dns error. I checked IIS and that particular site was not running. I started it and it said "Parameter is incorrect" and did not start the site. So when I checked the Home Directory page of the site's settings the Application pool which was selected was like "invalid pool" or something. I went ahead and changed that app pool to MSSharePointPortalAppPool or whatever it is, and then started and it was running at that point. When I tried to go to the page though, it would give me a login for which none of my usual login names or passwords would work. Finally it tells me that "You do not have permission to view this page." The login screen that comes up is not in a web page ...its a popup window. So after discussing this with Nick Huang of Microsoft Indonesia, he had pointed out the following: --- [Nick] The option chosen should be "install WITHOUT database engine". Reason why one option is grayed out is that the server is also a Domain controller (DC) as you mentioned in 1. The database engine here means MSDE which cannot be installed on a DC. [Nick] In the case that the prompt is presented in a popup dialog box, the problem is likely in IIS - authentication part. [Nick] There are some behaviors not right as I observed. 1. SPS2003 installation should create two application pool, MSSharePointPortalAppPool (for use of Portal sites), and CentralAdminAppPool (for use of SharePoint Central Administration web site). On your side, after installation completes and configuration starts, the SharePoint Central Administration site should be given CentralAdminAppPool, but it was given Invalid Pool. 2. Youâ??re being prompted to enter username / password when you enter SharePoint Central Administration. The expected result is that we should get a page in which weâ??re asked username / password. The username / password are used by SPS to connect the underlying database (to create configuration database). As long as we enter a username / password that has permission to SQL, we should be able to get through. --- If I understand correctly...in order to use Active Directory and have a domain with DHCP and RIS installed, you need to use a Domain Controller...so this is what I had previously set up on the 2K OS, which then carried over in the upgrade to 2k3.     - Active Directory User and Domain Name Hi, I am developing a small programme to add ACTIVE DIRECTORY users to another server. everything works fine .. I get the users from AD using LDAP but while adding users I need to get the user in the form of Domain\UserName. I get the domain name of our server but I face another problem which is our server name is "Preston" which I get it easily but user format in active directory is in the form of "Preston0\UserName" I have tried all the possible properties of Active Directory User but didnt able to get this Pre-window Active Directory Domain structure. How can I get the Active Directory Domain name programmatically. Please help me out for this problem, I shall be very gratefull of you people for any help.     - Problems in getting RSS web part access through the proxy Hi Sharepoint 2004 ISA 2004 I have a problem where I have an RSS news feed Web Part on my SharePoint Portal, but I can't get it to pass a request to the Proxy server, resulting in the Web Part failing to access the Internet to pull down the RSS news feeds. How can I ensure that SharePoint knows how to access my proxy? I have set up proxy settings in web.config and reset the ISA server, but I still have the problem.     - Programmatic access to SPS2003 document management functionality Hi, Some time ago we wrote an adapter to SharePoint 2001 so that we could use it as a document management system (DMS) in various of our applications. This adapter made extensive use of the SharePoint 2001 client components to do things like versioning and checkin/checkout. Unless I've missed something, the client-side components for SharePoint 2003 are quite limited in what they can do - not supporting check in and check out, for example. The solution currently appears to be to write web services on the SharePoint portal server itself and then consume these on the client side - but has anyone else come across this problem and been able to solve it in a quicker way?     - cannot edit portal front page I just took over this SharePoint Portal site, and found out that the "Edit Page" in the front page (http://portal/default.aspx) does not allow me to edit the page. the resulting URL is http://portal/default.aspx?Mode=Edit&PageView=Shared, but i don't see the "Modify Shared Page" on the upper right hand side. i am sure i am the site admin.     - De-installation fails I installed SharePoint Portal Server. When I tried to open the adminitration Web pages I received an error from the IIS. Looking at the IIS Admin Console I saw that the SharePoint Website was not running. Trying to start it I received the error message "Parameter is incorrect". Just before the progress bar reaches the end I get an error and the progress bar moves back to its origin. I have created a local user that is in the Power Users group. During installation I have entered that user name and password as requested but without prepending the server name (i.e., SPSUser instead of SPSServer\SPSUser). The newsgroup entry mentioned above indicates that the account name must be complete. How do I get rid of SharePoint to re-install it or how can I change the user information without re-installation?     - Moving template directories on existing pages Hi All, I've inherited a Sharepoint implementation and the previous owner didn't copy the templates directories and all pages use the default template (or are un-ghosted which I'm also trying to remedy). The default templates have also had a large degree of customisation which is why we'd like to move them as this would prevent future releases over writing our changes etc. I am aware I'm in the realms of "don't go near the database you'll be un-supported", but was wondering if anyone else had tried this and got it working ( I have managed on our development environment ), was just wondering if you spotted any issues at a later date due to this "patch" :) Also keen on any feedback out there. Here are the steps I took. 1. For each portal SITE database I performed a SELECT DISTINCT SetUpPath FROM Docs 2. For each template listed above ensured that I'd copied the required directories to: SPSMSITE -> /Templates/<%LCID%>/SPS-OURSITENAME-MSITE SPSPERS -> /Templates/<%LCID%>/SPS-OURSITENAME-PERS Etc 3. Added the new WEBTEMPSPS-OURSITE.XML to the /Templates/<%LCID%>/XML directory 4. Commented out the original templates from the WEBTEMPSPS.XML file to prevent any users creating new sites etc with default install templates 5. Ran the following update script against the site database to point existing pages to the newly created templates UPDATE Docs SET SetUpPath = Replace(SetUpPath, '<%LCID%>/SPS', '<%LCID%>/SPS-OUTSITENAME') I've had a quick look to see if there is a programmatic way to do the udpate and stay fully supported but couldn;t see anything, if anyone knows if this is possible please let me know. I fully understand the database update won't be supported, but on the other hand you only really learn how stuff works by messing under the hood (on your development environment of course).     - I must be missing something. Help! I'm new to Sharepoint Portal. I installed the Portal on a 2003 server with SQL 2000 and everything seems to work fine. (the 2nd time) From the HOME page I added several users. Some Admins and some Contributors. No matter what they are, ALL users have the ability to modify the settings of the portal and sites! Why? I've used WSS before and was able to create a fairly effective system for a department. I'm not sure I'm understanding some of the premisses of the Portal. I keep trying things that I could easily do in WSS and most features are not available. I thought by installing the Portal that I could control the main page, and what each user sees. I can't. Example: the Nav bar on the left where the Quick Launch bar would be. I can't change ANYTHING on that.     - Area Security Question Hello, I have my areas in the portal structured like this: Home --News ----News Sub1 2 scenarios: ONE - I give User A admin priveleges on the Home area and downgrade his rights on the News area to "View Listings". However, when user A goes to the News area he still has admin priveleges TWO - I give User A reader access on the home area, upgrade his rights to "View, insert, edit, delete listings; change area and list settings; change area settings" in the News area and downgrade his rights to "View Listings" in the News Sub1.     - Sharepoint Report Pack (DEP) error Looking for anyone that is using or has knowledge regarding the Reportings Services Report Pack for Sharepoint... it involves so many different processes it's hard to determine where to post for help. I have been somewhat successful implementing the Sharepoint Report Pack on a development enviroment however the DEP log ends in an failed error that I know I caused but need to understand if it can be corrected. Data extraction failed at 1/13/2006 8:34:36 AM... Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException Invalid object name 'dbSPSReporting.dbo.tblProcessAudit'. There are some records inserted in the tblProcessAudit regarding successful steps the last being usp_Insert_FactSiteStorage - Insert Rows FactSiteStorage - Is that the last step? When running the db creation scripts I renamed the dbSPSReporting to devSPSReporting and all references in the stored procedures etc. I'm afraid there is something hard coded in the DEP that I either need to change or go back and re-install the databases. The DEP runs with the same 'WARNING: Unable to access the the folders for the site "C9" at the URL http:...' that I've seen posted but evidently those are just to be ignored. Is there a way to remove them? Any suggestion or pointers to additional help (other than the deployment guide which I have scoured) whould be greatly appreciated! Hi I'm doing my first experiences with Microsoft Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 (SPS) and I need to connect the Portal to a database SQL-SERVER 2000 that it is installed on an standalone Windows 2000 Server. I've tried to connect but I can't find any place to enter a database user so SharePoint can connect to the SQL Server database... So, my doubt is: Is it possibel to connect a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to an SQL Server installed on a server on a different domain or on standalone server? If it is how can I define the database user or the SQL Server host server user that SharePoint has to use to be able to connect to the database? Thank you very much for your help!     - Restrictions on views Hello, I'm developing a travel request application for my employer. The application has some basic workflow. All the employees of the company submit their forms to this library. The management doesn't want employees from different departments to see the requests of other employees from other departments. So I was thinking of creating a view for each department, and show the forms that are created by that departement. But I also want to restrict access to other views, I don't want employees of one department to able to see the views of other departments.     - Adding users using a C# App I'm trying to build an windows application that will add 100 users to a tree of 1500 site("I know bad design"). Furthermore, all the sites has unique permissions. I have read many posts that adds a user but using a web application. I also read a post about adding a reference to the usergroup.asmx webservice. Could you please tell me how to add a user to all the site hirarchy(collection) while specifying the user permissions.     - Navigation Hi all I would like to insert a link in the navigation of our Sharepoint Portal. I know to extend the navigation. The structure of the portal is correct now. But some of these links link to a wrong website. They should link to an application which has to be opened in a new window, not in the content-part of website. Unfortunatelly I can't edit the hyperlinks. Neither the target or URL of the Hyperlink. Normally I can rightclick on a hyperlink and choose "Hyperlink" from context. Now this option is missing. Instead of that I can choose "Bearbeitbare Bereiche verwalten" (in german). In English that means something like "Manage editable areas". The Navigation has a orange border when i click on it.     - Document library Hi! I need web part which can help me to solve this problem... In document library I have more than 5.000 documents. I have view which sort this documents and groups them in three different properties levels. This view works very slow, paging is awful ... and so on ... I need something like tree view which will read document properties and show it, instead of folder. Solution will allow me to load only first level document properties. After one of properties is selected solution will load second level properties based on this selection. After third selection solution will load and show documents which have all three properties.     - Backing up and Restoring Portal Sites Hi everyone! Im currently developing a portal site for a client. Im testing all functionality in my pc, later I would start doing it all at the server of our client. Problem: I tried backing up and restoring site using stsadmn.exe, backing up was successfull, but restoring was not. What I did before restoring: - Deleted the database which the site uses (SITE,PROF,SERV), just to check if the backup would also restore the site database. (Testing it for worst case scenario) After that I restored the backup file using stsadmn.exe Error encountered after trying to restore portal site over Sharepoint Central Admin "You cannot connect to the database or the database does not exist. Check that the database name is correct and try again. (SPCPorta1_SITE)" But its there after I restored it, I checked it. Its there, I checked the account login information used by the pool, I verified it, uses the same account. Please help, I need this to migrate the whole site to a new physical server.     - RTF files index fails I have had troubles with the indexing of rtf files with Sharepoint Portal 2001 for quite some time now. Basically if an RTF document is saved with a doc extension the indexer does not index the file. This may sound like an unsual situation, but a number of OCR programs save like this as well as a number of documents from outside of our firm are saved like this. I still am a bit confused as to why Word XP does not offer to save the document in the native doc format when it recognizes an RTF file is open. I was hoping that SPPS 2003 would rectify the situation but it seems as if it still exists. The only way I have found to get around the issue is to pull the file out of the portal, open it in Word 97 and resave the document into the portal. Any thoughts? I have a site with the Host Header defined as "Shut"...I added an host file entry and I can get to it. I am trying to map an internal site as http:\\shut1...but I cant get to it even after adding the host file entry Also what is the difference between the namespace of a portal site to the namespace of the host header....they need not be one and the same right ?...how should they be set up ?     - Problem with self-service site creation I've got a problem with Sharepoint's Self-Service Site Creation. I've installed all the most recent service packs for Sharepoint 2003, and still have this problem. It started when we began creating sites, and noticed that the link in the upper right-hand corner to to "Up to Team Site" was no longer automatically appearing there. I tried editing this directly in Frontpage, but couldn't get it to work. Also, under "Site settings"/"Manage sites and workspaces" none of the sites we've created recently appear there - however all of the sites we created earlier are there. In addition, those earlier sites all have the link in the upper right-hand corner. Any ideas? Also, is there a way, with Frontpage, to access all of the /sites/sitename/default.aspx sites?     - File Access I have a ftp with alot of files on it, atleast 200GB of info, I want to incorporate these files into Sharepoint with the least amount of work. I have even c a reated a link to the ftp but it wont link directly to it. How to display "Assigned To" along with other default Fields
in Threaded View?

Added a new column "Assigned To"
IN new Item it is displayed and we are able to assign to
the team members. BUT This is not displayed when
Discussion Group Name is click.

Any Ideas! Please Help.
