V2 TR: Document indexing apparently not functioning
Pardon me for posting a question that may have already been answered...I've
searched this newsgroup but have been unable to find a solution to the
current problem.
I have an installation of SPS 2003 (Beta 2 Technical Refresh) in a small
server farm--one server running SQL Server 2000 SP3a, a second server
running SPS 2003 and acting as the web, search, index, and job server.
Within our portal, I have created a number of areas and sub-areas, and
within one of these sub-areas I have uploaded documents (Word, Excel, and
Visio) into the Document Library for that area. (As an aside, I'm not
pleased with the document management functionality--or lack thereof--in SPS
2003 unless you install the backwards-compatible document library. But
that's another story.)
What I have found is that searches on words I know to be inside one of these
documents do not return any results. In fact, the only searches that return
results are searches that include content from external web sites. (Which,
unbeknownst to me, are now being indexed simply because I created a portal
listing that references the external web site.)
Any suggestions? I have installed the Indexing Service on the
web/search/index server, made sure it is allowed as a web service extension
in IIS, and restarted the IIS services. That was two days ago, and it still
doesn't work. (I have tried to be patient.)
Thanks in advance for your help.

Scott Lowe

Web Part migration
Having difficulty with web parts not appearing in the correctformat.
Development environment has correct configuration. Attemptes to

state. Is there a way to manually copy the web part from dev to prod? We

SPS V2 TR List view webpart toolbar
How do you set the list view web part toolbar programatically or in any way
but manually (either through the initialization xml or what). It isn't a
property of a ListView webpart so you can't set it that way. And I don't
seem to find any way. When I refer to toolbar setting I either mean "No
toolbar, Summary Toolbar, Full toolbar" setting.

SPS 2003 Launch Date news
Hi All,
FYI...
I noticed this on the MS office site:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/getit.asp
I thought I'd post it in case you hadn't come across it
yet. Looks like Office is set for retail release in
October and seems to suggest that SPS 2003 will be re-
badged as Microsoft Office Sharepoint Portal Server.
There is also an eval sign-up offer that sugests that
eval kits will be available from mid-september.
I notice that all dates are subject to change.

Document sizes across domains
Hi,
We have set up another domain with SPS 2001 so other departments can
use our documents.
We are having problems uploading/adding files however. Anything above
70k seems to hang up. Less than approx 70k uploads ok. At well less
than 1 mb we're certainly not exceeding the 50mb file limit. If I use
a machine to upload in the same domain everything works fine. It's
only when I try to upload from one domain to another. Have removed all
timeouts from the firewall. Our firewall administrator tells me that
the firewall does not restrict document size.
I have seen this problem mentioned in ng's before but have seen no
solution suggested. Anybody any ideas?

Portal Creation Failed SPS v2
Ok... I tired to replicate a test environment and I came
across a "Portal Creation Failed" at the end of my
installation process when trying to create a new portal.
I have:
W2K3 Enterprise (licensed)
SQL 2000 with SP3
SharePoint 2003 Beta 2 TR (installed without database)
The process gets up to 52% then crashes. The log file
says it fails in:
17:38:45 UpdateColumnName set as: LocalizedMsg_Text
17:38:45 childTableCount set as: 8
17:38:45 cm.Command Text set as ... Update
dbo.orgle_errormsg ... Compilation failed to start due to
an error connecting to the database
That error is repeated 3 times and then it starts some
other processes such as CreateCategories(), CreateSPWeb
and Role object, Update roleReader, Category manager
role, Member role, custom roles. Then:
17:38:52 Exit InitCategories()
17:38:52 Failed to create portal succesfully Pruebas
Then it does the rollback, finishing as:
20:09:52 Portal creation job exception ...
System.NullReferenceException.
20:09:52 Failed to create portal successfully Pruebas
20:09:52 Portal creation complete (Status:
PortalAdminJobStatusFailed)
As you see, the log is quite long so I posted a summary.
Does anyone have any ideas? Meanwhile I think I'll have
to bring up SharePoint 2001 :(

SQL and SPS
The default install for SPS includes the MSDE (Microsoft
Data Engine), but this does not facilitate index/search
capability in Sharepoint. Help files say you have to
install Micorsoft SQL 2000 to enable search/indexing.
My question is, does the SQL server 2000 have to be
running on the same box as SPS, or can this be a remote
data source? I have an existing SQL farm running with
ample space to support Sharepoint and want to avoid
another instance of SQL server in my domain.

SPS V2TR - Web Parts Not Available To User
We're pushing out the ability for people in our organization to control
their respective Areas. In doing so, they serve as "Members" for the main
Portal and then "Web Designers" in their given Areas.
It looks like if they are not an Administrator / Web Designer at the root,
they do not have acces to some (ie All) of the Web Parts in their
respective Area. They can Edit / Design the page, but none of the default
Web Parts show up in their Portal catalog.
Note that I'm not talking about Personal Views, I'm talking about a Web
Designer being able to modify the Shared View in an Area.

Here is the problem. Under Topic Areas you can group listings by

the meta-data added when you "add a link to site" under Site Directory.
On a fresh install there is a region column when you add a link, yet I
cannot find a way to group the listings under a Topic Area by this
column. You can only do it by group.
