For those of you who are interested in building a Microsoft Office
SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) virtual machine for demos or
development, I'm working on a series of blog posts which describe the
process that I have taken to build my own VPC (Virtual PC) image.

It's very detailed -- including screenshots -- and I'd like to get your
feedback on tips and best practices if you've built your own VPC images
for MOSS 2007. If fact, because it's so detailed, I've had to break it
into several blog posts.

Here is the link to my blog where you can read all about it:

Thanks, and good luck!

For the WSS FAQ, would it be possible for you to also put the whole thing in
one blog post or even better in one document downloadable from your site
(best for you would be if that download was specified in a short blog post
that explained what it was and I could then link to the blog post rather
than just to the document)?

[In this case you could send me private mail if you want to discuss despite
the standard line below]

Hi Mike --

I'm planning to make the entire procedure available in a downloadable
PDF format, but I wanted to first post it in a collaborative format to
collect feedback... in case anyone had good ideas for changing the
procedure.

Thanks!

Thanks Tony,

I'll probably see the PDF file when it's out but just in case can you try to
send me e-mail then ?

Aside: I've been trying to work out why I've happily in the past added links
to a series (up to 4 usually) of blog items to the WSS FAQ and now I'm
asking for a single file. I think it has to do with the fact that this is an
installation and thus everything needs to be done (that and maybe the fact
that we have other single installation papers and this differs mainly only
in the VM aspect).

I found a solution for this postin on Tony's blog itself:

"Solution to Office clients installed on server problem

The System Event Nofication Service (SENS) uses the same communication
"channels" (not the correct word, but works) as does office products do
in communicating with the server.
Stop and disable the SENS service on the server and everything will
work perfectly.
Or create two shortcuts on your desktop, NET STOP SENS and NET START
SENS to turn the service off and on. This service is used by com
objects to send event log messages to the system and may not be needed
on your test VPC."
