    - Which is the difference between an area and a site? Hi all, I need some help in some concepts. What things are coveniente to put in areas and sub areas and which are advisable to put them in a site? What information convien to see in the area and which in the site.     - All Files Read Only in All Document Libraries I had a few users complain that their files are all set to Read Only. I checked into it further and it seems that every file in every document library is now Read Only. If I create a new document, and upload that to the server and then try and edit it, it is Read Only. I cannot replace a file when I save it or I get the "This file is Read Only" message. I can save it as a different name, and then try to edit that new file and now that file is Read Only as well. I have searched around and haven't found any solutions but a few people with similar problems and no answers. A point in the right direction or any ideas would be greatly appreciated!     - View all pending items in approve\reject lists many of our sharepoint folders have approve\reject lists setup, so people will not be able to post new items into the libraries before a moderator approves them. most moderators use the "notify me" functionality to be notified when a new item is created. i was wondering if there's a place in sharepoint where i, the sysatem admin, can be able to look at ALL the items in these lists, to make sure a moderator didnt miss anything.     - Portal Homa Area definition Portal Homa Area definition Hi Analizing the different posibilities regarding customization, and considering my client's scenario (size of implementation, support possibilities) and the fact I AM a newbie, I decided to mainly make some simple changes to some areas defintions (creating copies of the original ones) and use CSS to cutomize my portal.     - Create a column that includes Days inside Begin and End I have a list of events, and I'm trying to group them under headings by date. I have a begin date and an end date column. Currently things are grouped by begin date. But if an event spans from for example: Monday - Wednesday. The list will only show it on Monday. I want it to show up on every day that it occurs.     - Publish Sharepoint (ISA 2004) from 1 server housing two sites Imagine "myserver" has two Sharepoint sites: Site1 (set to Anonymous authentication only) Site 2(content set to Windows Integrated) I configure ISA 2004 publishing rules to point to the respective server housing the websites Site1 and Site2. Then when I hit "http://mysharepointsite.mycompany.com" from the Internet, I get prompted for Windows authentication. That is happening because Site2 is probably the one being published, not Site1 as I would like. How can I solve this ? I think I could assign a specific IP address to "site1" and point ISA to that specific IP. Not sure if there are better ways to solve this though. PS:Also posted at the ISA group.     - Moving Event list from main portal page to an area Hi, I set up an event list on my main page on SPS 2003. I need to move this list under a sub area. I saved my list as template and included the data. I can see my saved list under list template gallery, but when I go to my sub area I can not see the template to set it up.     - Not able to add Cross-Site Groups to site HELP! I have an issue on my WSS/SPS server. Most recent version, patched to latest version etc. Well, user is trying to add a cross site group to a site, but it is timing out. Basically SharePoint is not allowing cross site groups to be added to ANY site, I had her try a different one. When she tries to add an individual user there is no problem, but this Cross Site group will not be inserted into the group. I've rebooted, looked into a few things but can not determine why the system will not allow Cross Site Groups to be added to sites. I've tried reader, contributor etc with no luck.     - SharePoint & Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Integration Hi - I'm just wondering if anyone has experience, tools or ideas related to using SharePoint Portal Server 2003 with Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0 We're basically trying to have Adobe crawl thru a SharePoint document library and consolidate all documents (typically Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files) into a single PDF. We've gotten over the initial security issues (i.e. using anonymous access vs. having problems where Adobe could not access an authenticated site), but now we appear to be hitting some limitations. >From what we can tell, the Adobe Acrobat tool is having issues following SharePoint links that contain JavaScript (e.g. javascript:SubmitFormPost) to go down to a sub-directory. We're also having problems getting Adobe to walk a basic Windows directory structure to grab all documents under a given set of directories in a tree. We're trying to use that as a fall-back if we have to use a Windows Network Place to get at the document library. It appears that Adobe only lets you select all files within a single folder, but not a folder by itself. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.     - How to install SQL Server Report Pack for SPS? I want to install the report pack for SPS, but I am a little unsure about the install process. I have a single SPS box (web, index, search) and a single SQL box. Exactly what do I need to install for the report pack to work... and on which server? The system requirements state that you need the following, but they do not clarify on which server(s). Server OS SPS 2003 SQL Server with dbSPSReportStaging and dbSPSReporting installed SQL Reporting Services Visual Studio .NET LogParser Does all of this need to be installed prior to the packs and on which server(s)? When I attempted to install the packs on my SQL server which already has SQL Report Server installed, during the install it says that to "Deploy Report Solution" it needs Visual Studio and to "Install Data Extraction Program" it needs SPS. Does this mean that I should be installing the packs on my SPS box? If so, that would mean that I would also need to install SQL Server and the reporting services on it also. These instructions seem a bit "fuzzy" to me at best. Can anyone give me the proper install order and on which server, etc? Thanks for any help!     - Text size setting in IE changing to smallest on WSS sites Hi, Recently our IE text size settings were changing to smallest on our WSS sites. This was only happening on one machine, and only using one login (when I logged in using my info, it operated normally.) We can't recreate the problem, it just shows up every once in a while. It appears to only affect the text within the web parts and when we change the text setting in IE back to medium, the text size is normal again, until you click to go to another page, then for a split second before the page changes, you can see the text revert back to the smallest setting.     - Sharepoint survey there is limit of 35 questions for number type Trying to create a 62 question survey, most of the questions need a numeric response, but there seems to be a limit of 35 questions for that type of option?, are they all the same as it does state you can have 1024 questions. Does it mean of mixed type? I can use a text field but when exporting to Excel I will have to fiddle the data and remove the <div> </div> html around each entry via RIGHT LEFT and LEN functions.     - WSS application site templates added to Sharepoint Portal Server Hi all I am trying to use one of the Microsoft WSS application site templates for a top level site. I have added the template to my SharePoint Portal Server via the site settings of the SPS 2003>Manage Security & Additional Settings>Manage Site Template Gallery. However when i create a new site via the Site Directory Area i do not see the template listed in the list of templates available, i only see the default ones. However if i create a WSS site then in that site add the template i can then use that template but only for the subsites. I want to be able to create a top level WSS site via the template.     - Restore issues Hello, I'm kind of new to SharePoint Portal Server 2001 and was handed an issue that I have some questions about. I was asked to restore some documents to the server so I did a complete restore to the development server thinking we could just grab the documents needed and repost them up to the production server. Now that I have the development server ready I am now informed that someone accidentally deleted a whole folder with just over 2400 documents in it and not just a "few" documents. Do I need to do a complete restore of the site on the production server or can I copy the documents from the test server which has the data needed over? If I can copy the documents then will the file attributes copy over like Author. The other part is what about the catalogs that go with the documents? Can those be transfered as well somehow. Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas on this? I'm just leary of doing a complete restore on the production server.     - Emailing Surveys? Is it possible to send surveys out via email (in this case, Lotus Notes) and have the survey responses populate a list on the Sharepoint site? What we're trying to do: We have a service request systems and we want to do satisfaction surveys. We'd like to email them the survey, which is pre-populated with the request number and description, and a series of five or six questions related to quality. Once the customer completes the survey, they hit a submit button and it sends that info into the survey list on the sharepoint site. There would be open fields (not included in the email to the customer) that would be proprietary to my dept. to allow us to respond to negative responses and input the results of any discussion. Even if it's just a URL link to the survey, the key is the pre-population of the request number and description, so 1) the customer knows what they're being asked about, and 2) the support team knows what request is being responded to by the client.     - Gatherer Log Errors on .pdf files When checking the Gatherer Log Details, there are hundreds of the following error: "The address could not be found, (0x80070020 - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. )" These are all on .pdf documents on our file/print server. I don't think I'm having problems with all .pdf files because searching for text I know exists in some .pdf files does results return results correctly. I have ruled out backups and antivirus scans. I am now trying to modify one of the columns (which is a 'choice' type field) and just add one more choice. When I try to add the choice (and even if click ok without modifying the choices) I get the error: Cannot complete this action. Please try again.     - Issues with SPS Area security... I've seen several articles with people complaining about area security not working as described. None of the proposed solutions I've seen posted seem to work. I have disabled anonymous access to the portal, so users cannot get in until I place them into the 'reader' site group on the main page in Manage Users. I want all users to be able to access the Home page, and they can once I add them in here. What I need to do, is control access to areas so that only certain groups can access certain areas. I need the areas to disappear from the navigation toolbar at the top of the page if they do not have access. This seems very simple: go into the area that I want to lock down, click on Manage Security, then make sure that only the users and Active Directory groups I want to have access are listed. I also made sure it set to "Only users with the View Area right can see this area on the navigation hierarchy." and "These permissions are not inherited from the parent area." I've seen multiple posts (and even the SP Prod & Services Resource Kit book) say that this is how you do this. It does not work however - everyone can still see everything. What am I missing???     - Guest access - where does it come from? I have given a domain group access as Reader to a WSS site and to two document libraries. I have created cross-site groups for some users to have access to the other document libraries. On the document library manage users page, the cross-site groups appear and are listed as Guests -- where does that come from and what effect does that have on permissions? For example... Problem: one user is part of the domain group with Reader access for the one doc library and is also in one of the cross site groups with Contributor access for another doc library. For the library where she is just part of the large domain group with reader access she is not able to download data. The doc library owner had to go in and add her as a Contributor, then she was able to download. I do not understand this or the role of "Guest". Any help is much appreciated!     - Immediate Alerts not working on the Portal Server Hi All I have a server farm consisting web front end, index/job server and a database server. I have 8 portals on the server farm and have shared services enabled. The portal that provides the shared services and hosts mysites. Six of them have team sites on them and in one of the portals we are storing documents. Immediate alerts work as expected on the portals that provide shared services and the team site but they do not work on the portals where we are storing the documents in areas, thus using the portal content index on the server. When ever the index is updated the immediate alerts seem to get sent. I suspect it's the way I have built the index. Can someone tell me what the problem may be?     - Sharing a web-part between areas I have two areas under the main site, 'news' and 'org'. I want to use the same default calender web-part in both these areas, but in the news have it displayed as the list view and in 'org' have it displayed in the grid view. I want it so that when a user adds an appointment in the grid view, it also appears in the list view of it in the other area.     - Share Portal Client on XP Pro workstation We have share portal server 2001, we have installed new XP workstations with Office 2003 installed. When I attempt to install the client I receive an error that Outlook Express must be installed before the client can be installed. This is strange as Outlook Express is installed. I have a client who wishes to include the cFolders (collaboration
folders) from his mySAP ERP system in his Sharepoint Portal Server
document search. This will enable the client to search multiple
document repositories with one search expression. I have tried
including it as a non-Sharepoint content source and given it
credentials that work directly however it still fails. Has anyone had
any success crawling these files with SPS2003?
