Create New Portal Site.
When I go to the "Create a portal site" page the Big red
X says "No Virtual servers are available or the selected
virtual server is already extended.
I did "extend" it once...Am I not able to create other
Virtual Servers? or is that for a distributed
environment with many sharepoint servers attached?
So I can only have one main web site? and all the rest
have to be children of the top one?
but can't I have more "top sites" off this server maybe?
if anyone can just point me to an article on this I can
do the rest...
sorry I'm new..Just got it set up today....
Thanks for the help

Logout of a portal?
There's no logout on the default sharepoint pages...I
have different user's setup and I want to log in and out
to allow myself to see what privilages different people
have. The credentials seem to be cached in a cookie
somewhere so aside from deleting the cookie, how do I
change which user I"m logged in as?
Thanks

File Share/WebDAV question
Hi,
when I click on the explorer view in one of the document libraries, the URL
changes to \\server\subarea\document%20library ok, but the browser says
"cannot find server". Just typing \\server works, so I guess there is an
additional step to setup the correct WebDAV path on the server itself. What
do I have to do to make the file share stuff work? - Many thanks in advance.
just in case, the server is a Win2.3k and WebDAV is set to allowed in
IIS6...

SPS development software
I start researching for my company if it's feasible to
use SPS.
Could someone give me some information of what Microsoft
software tool that can be used to customize SPS? If there
is then could it be download somewhere for trial?
Thanks all.

Area, Topics, Sites and else...
I could read that Areas are made for organising,
structure information but in the same it's still possible
to create lists and libraries in them.
Does anybody knows of a good explanation about this.
In which circumstances is it better to create content in
areas rather than sites linked to area.
Are there any pros and cons with both approaches that led
to offer the two possibilities.
Is there any overall recommended practices to build a
whole Intranet dealing with Areas, Topics, Sites,etc...
If the whole concept and approach is clear to someone I
would be very glad to have some highlight.
Thanks in advance

SPS V2 - Sharing list content
Hi,
Is there a way to share a list content over the whole=20
portal.
More specifically I would like :
1) to have a Companies Contact list and being able from=20
any site to build other lists with a company field that=20
would be filled from the Company field of the Contact=20
list. (Seems to be possible only between lists in the=20
same site or content area)
2) to have a web part in a site or sub area that displays=20
list content created in another area or site.
Thanks in advance for any information or alternative.

Sharepoint Portal Compatible application????
we are in the process of implementing WSS and SPS v2 in
our organisation.
After installing the WSS we were extremely excited about
the integration when pressing "New Document" in a document
library.
A little later we installed SPS, but unfortunately
the "New Document" button now doesn't work anymore.
We receive an error stating that we need a Sparepoint
Portal Compatible application to perform this action.
We have extracted the JavaScript Code from the web-server
and executed under Windows Scripting Host - everyting work
fine, except that we get a message stating that we are
downloading a file that might be harmfull to the computer.
When accepting the download everything works like a charm.
We the tried to insert the same code into an extremely
simple HTML page, to run the code under Internet Explorer -
now it doesn't work anymore. ActiveX can't instantiete
the object - is the erromessage (Error no. 429).
We are using Office XP on the client in question, and have
not changed anything in this installation from when we
were running WSS and SPS.
Can anybody help us to get this feature to work again? Tag: How to Change a Team Site's Style? Tag: 26782
Changing the name of document library
Is it possible to change the url-name of document library?
Now if the a link to the document is sent via email it
tends to be too long for the mail 80-character limit and
is truncated to two lines and thus broken. Part of the
solution would be renaming the url of document library to
doclib.
Many thanks,

MSDE and SQL Server
Hi there, just a question regarding how SharePoint 2003
repository works.
I've installed SP2003 on a server that was already running
SQL Server 2000: from MS documentations I figured out that
SP2003 uses SQL server as repository for its datas.
Instead, I discover that SP2003 has installed MSDE to
store information. Is that correct or is there a way I can
force SP server to use existing SQL Server?
Or have I just misinterpreted the documentation?
Thanks for your help

Upgrading to RTM Gives virtual server not in the config database.
I have just successfully upgraded our single server running both
Sharepoint Portal Server and Windows Sharepoint Services from the TR
to the RTM Versions.
However despite following the instructions in this very lengthy
article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=824877&product=sppsvr2003.
when I try to access my previously functioning sharepoint services
sites I get the following message
The virtual server that is referenced here is not in the config
database.
Other Info
a. I created a new portal site for the default site and it works fine
b. The sharepoint site is a FQDN
c. I have MSDE and SQL Server installed but I am using the MSDE for my
data
d. When I reextended the sharepoint sites as the article suggests I
created dummy content databases , removed them and added my old
content databases to the sites
e. During the upgrade the install told me it was upgrading these
content databases so I assume they are good to go
f. When I look in the associated content databases they are the
correct content databases and have not been overwritten.
g. I do not understand one of the instructions in the article (See
below). It mentions disconnecting the content database, I can see no
way to do that so I chose to remove it and add back the correct one
???? The config database can be disconnected do they mean that ???
Do one of the following, as appropriate to your situation:
If you did not create a portal site on the virtual server that was
previously used by Windows SharePoint Services, remove the content
database that is currently configured for the virtual server. To do
so:
On the Virtual Server Settings page, click Manage content database
On the Manage Content Databases page, click the content database.
On the Manage Content Database Settings page, click to select the
Remove content database check box in the Remove Content Database area,
and then click OK.
If you did create a portal site on the virtual server that was
previously used by Windows SharePoint Services, disconnect the content
database that is currently configured for the virtual server.

Approval Process
Hello
From my understanding for viewing a document that has been
checked in and sent for approval is that it will not be
able to view by readers before approval.
Once the approver has approved then the document will be
published and now readers can view it.
But my problem arises when I upload a document, sent to
for approval. Even before the approver approves the
document, my colleague who logins as a reader, he can see
the document. May I know why?
Immediate help is appreciated.

SPS2003 - Is there a way to automatically copy or "sync" a document folder onto a local computer?
I have a user that wants to have a document folder (in a doc library)
automatically download a copy onto his local computer. I looked at the
Synchronization functionalitiy, but because it is through Web Folders it
thinks it is a web site and doesn't seem to work correctly.

Document Migration Tool (spsmigrate.exe)
Does anybody know where I can get the Document Migration
Tool (spsmigrate.exe). It's described in microsoft
documentation, but I have not be able to find it. I have
searched msdn downloads, free downloads, sps2003 .iso, and
the sps2003 installation.
Ultimately, I'm trying to migrate documents from a sps2001
workspace to a sps2003 portal and the documentation that I
have found on this tells me to either upgrade, which I
don't want to do, or migrate using this spsmigrate.exe
tool.

New Exchange Instance Messes Up My Site
Our network administrator had to recreate exchange profiles this morning and
now when I go to "My Site" SPS 2003 TR is trying to create a new "My Site"

How can I get my old My Site to work with the new exchange profile?

Can NOT delete Folders
There is a sub folder "Demonstrations & Seminars" in the
Documents folder. I Can Not delete it. I receive various
error messages saying "I do not have permission / it does
not exist". However, I am getting this message Logged on
as Administrator on the Portal Server. To extend the
issue, I made a copy of the Documents folder which was
succesful. I was able to delete all of it's content except
for the copy of the "Demonstrations & Seminars" folder,
once again I get the same "No Permissions" message. Right
now the Workspace is functional except for having
2 "Document" folders with a subfolder of "Demonstrations &
Seminars" within, that I can not delete. I stopped and
started all related services, reset index, Full Update,
rebooted, etc.. any other ideas would be welcome ....

Database Engine
1) From what I gather from the newsgroup; SPS2003 can use SQL as a database
engine but SPS2001 cannot (must use WSS). Is this correct?
2) Due to storage issues, can I install SPS2001 on a server and redirect the
paths for the WSS database and streaming database to another server with
more storage space, or must the drives be local? (Our Exchange and
Project/Sql Servers have storage to spare but my available server is more
limited.)
