    - how to recover sharepoint site from existing database after computer is renamed I have windows sharepoint service set up in a Virtual PC NAME1 and created a sharepoint site http://localhost. Next, I changed the computer name of this vpc to NAME2 and went to the same site, it becomes unavailable, the error it reported is "Unable to connect to database. Check database connection information and make sure the database server is running.     - Porting WSS sites to SPS Hi: I would like to port some of the WSS sites to SPS. I am bit skeptical about the migration process and wonder is migration as simple as creating some new blank sites under SPS and running the smigrate.exe.     - Too many alerts :\ We've been receiving alert emails relating to information that is posted on the portal server that dates back to several months. We've gotten alerts that went as far back as March 2005. Users have been complaining of receiving 20+ alerts of postings that are outdated. The alerts state that the listing has either been added or modified, which is not true. I've reset Sharepoint Portal Alert Service on many occasions, but these problems still persist.     - High Security Domain Controller GPO preventing user to view Sharep I'm currently running Windows Server 2003 with a separate domain controller and sharepoint server. I installed sharepoint without errors, then applied my High Security group policy templates pulled from Windows 2003 security guide. I then take my user which was able to log in before, and can not long in now. I get the login box to display, enter my information and then the box comes backup, like it was not able to authenticate to the domain controller. Would anyone know which setting in the domain controller GPO that would prevent sharepoint authentication?     - search in a library (HOW ?) Is it true that searching in a Library is a brute force searching ???? It means not using indexes. Our customers are very annoyed with searching when they need to wain for several minutes for the results. And I see the string after searching - "t may take several minutes for recent items to appear in the search results." !!!!!!! :-((((( What are ways to improve searching in libraries ??? Thanks.     - Extranet SPS 2003 and MySite Link Hello, I have setup both an Intranet/Extranet SPS 2003 environment for our organization. Everything is working fine except for one thing -- I need my extranet users to be able to uthenticate against our external site, thus giving them access to their MySite page. Currently, this is not happening. If an external user visit the site they get the plan looking anonymous look to it... And in the top right corner is only the "Help" link. If I try to go to the MySite link, instead of it prompting for authentication it simply says access denied. I have checked IIS and I have both anonymous and Integrated authentication turned on. How can I get the portal side to prompt/or simply use the integrated authentication to authenticate to the portal so my users can have access to their MySite pages?     - Does SPS benefit from/need WSS 3.0?? I've recently installed Portal Server by following a recommened deployment guide from MS. The guide made no mention whatsoever of installing Sharepoint Services 3.0 first just Portal Server on it's own. I now have a portal with MySite functionality and as far as I can see everything else! I'm just left wandering whether I'm now missing any functionality or facility on account of NOT installing WSS. Can anyone clarify this for me please?     - SPS2007 Mysite created on separate web site I have just finished installing SPS2007 by following an MS deployment guide and all appears to be working well. I have set up the portal on a host headered web site in the style of http://my.portal.com I am concerned though that when users browse to their 'MySite' they are taken to a separate site using the server name as a url with a non standard port, e.g. http://servername:4369 etc. Is this now the default behaviour or have I taken a wrong turn somewhere? More importantly is there a way in which I can bring the MySites back in under the main portal? I'm not fussed whether it's a move or re-creation so long as I bring everything back under one domain name.     - WSS V3 beta2 FrontPage Problem I am having trouble opening the default master page in frontpage 2003. When i attempt to do this i recieve the error : The web site has ben configured to disallow editing with FrontPage Contact your web site administrator for more information. Ive seen a page on microsoft.com where you can edit the onet.xml to generate this error. However, there appears to be nothing in onet.xml that would case this error. Now when I open it with sharepoint designer 2007 beta two i can open it up ok. However, the organsation i am working for is insisting we use frontpage. Does anybody have any ideas?     - SBS Sharepoint Error...please help Hi, we use sharepoint quite heavily within our organisation and also CRM 3.0 In order to be more efficient I installed the Sharepoint Listpart component. All was working fine, although I could not get the component to find my crm box (seperate box) I then did an IIS reset to try and fix the problem.... then the real problem happened! my default portal...http:\\companyweb which now does not work at all...I get the following error: An unexpected error has occurred.     - MOSS 2007 B2: BDC Search Hi, I have been following the examples in the MOSS 2007 SDK to integrate business data into the BDC. I have got all the business data web part examples working, but have come unstuck with the searching. I have followed the instructions in the 'Step 1: Add a Content Source' page, but I keep getting the following error in the crawl logs when I do a 'Full Crawl': "bdc2://ee041c93-75b2-4114-a746-07a93e082514/550/.../551 The parameter is incorrect. (Access denied by BDC.)" Directly below this is the following message which always succeeds: "bdc://ee041c93-75b2-4114-a746-07a93e082514/__bk070... Crawled" Below is some more information and various things I have tried so far: The machine is a clean install of the following: Windows Server 2003 R2 + security updates SQL Server 2005 SP1 Office 2007 Beta 2 Programs + SharePoint Designer MOSS 2007 Beta 2 (installed using farm config, not standalone) IE7 Beta 2 The default content access account is called 'SharePoint Service', and it is a member of the local admins group. The database I am trying to search is AdventureWorks2000 (running in SQL 2005, though the other BDC functions work fine, so I don't think this is the issue) I have tried adding the 'SharePoint Service' account into the 'Manage Permissions; Business Data Catalog' list with full rights. I have tried changing the default content access account to my own account (also a local admin) I have tried changing the 'Access Account' to 'server process account' in the 'BDC Applications', 'Change Application Settings' page.     - Web Capture web part and auth proxies I downloaded a Web Capture Web Part from http://www.microsoft.com/sharepoint/downloads/components/detail.asp?a1=461 and I am not sure it works with auth proxies. Does any knows if it works under these conditions? It does not have any configurations at the web part level, so it will use the client proxy config or the portal web.config if defined.     - problems with 'My Inbox' on MySite Hi, I'm having problems browsing to the second page of the top level web part gallery (unexpected error, with link to Web Parts Maintenance Page) and getting My Inbox to work on MySite. I can drag it into a zone, but can't configure it to work with our mail server, nothing happens when I click apply! The same problem goes for My Calendar and Tasks webparts. I don't get this problem however anywhere else on the portal! The top level is fine, (MyInbox functions properly there) as are other sites web part galleries. Has anybody come across this before, it definitely seems to be MySite specific, and I wonder if maybe deleting and recreating the MySite template that could fix this??     - Lost in sharepoint... I'm building up a Helpdesk function serving clients for my company. Part of that helpdesk is to create a sharepoint site for each client, and let the customers access that site through the web from our company website.     - Image icons don't display in sharepoint document libraries. We have an issue with icons in the document libraries; The gif icons suddenly disappear and sharepoint shows icgen.gif instead. When we run "iisreset" command this issue is fixed, but it's only a matter of time because the icons disappear few minutes later. We have serveral virtual servers with one different application pool for each one, and this problem only happens in two of them, so the installation seems to be all right. We thought the problem could be dued to the configuration of the application pools, but we didn't find anything strange or different to make us think there was the cause.     - sharepoint selective update over lmited bandwidth links sI need to do selective updating for multiple sites over limited links. Some need daily updates, some weekly or monthy. The length of time required to look for new files and then copy them to all locations over the satellite causes the replication to fail by timing out or taking up all the bandwidth. I want to change the structure so that all critical information requiring daily updates is in just a few folders, weekly updates for other folders, etc. Is this possible in the current released version of SharePoint or possibly the new version in Beta now?     - Area Contents web part grouping Hi, I have a problem with the Area contents web part. I have 4 areas A, B, C, D. Within each area I have some listings L1, L2, L3... . Ln. These listings are grouped and ordered by using grouping and ordering.     - How do I change the character setting to display all the text... The columns that shows in Sharepoint comes from my InfoPath form. The text description in one of the column does not fully display on Sharepoint. It seems to cut off at 255 character.     - search/indexing wss-only server Hi, I have 1 SPS/WSS server and another WSS-only server (http://server2). I setup SPS to index the WSS-only server. However, it only indexed http://server2 and not subsites/other site collections (eg http://server2/sites/collect1). I tried the various options. Any solution to this? I also tried to create different content source for http://server2/sites/collect1. It seems to index, again, just that site collection and doesn't seems to follow any links.     - SPPS 2003 Memory useage? I have recently deployed a Sharepoint 2003 Portal server. I have one site with a single document library in the site with 90,000+ documents.     - File Upload Issue Our corporate portal is running SPS 2003 with MSDE When uploading any kind of files to any document library on our portal, we receive this message: The URL 'Document Library/AHCA HFW Additional Servers Quote.doc' is invalid. It may refer to a nonexistent file or folder, or refer to a valid file or folder that is not in the current Web. I've tried to upload in various other document libraries and I also created a couple of test doc libraries.     - Cannot upload any large files I am trying to upload some large files. I found the setting to increase the file size so I can upload files larger than 50mb. I changed it to 100mb. I then tried to upload a 70mb file. The process completes with no error message but the files never show up in the document library. It used to give me an error about the file size before I changed the setting. I then tried to upload a small file (1mb) and that works fine. But now when I try to upload a 30mb file, the same thing happens with the larger (70mb) file. It seems to work fine but the file doesn't show up?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.     - WSS - email spoofing? Scenario - I am an administrator, and my e-mail address is set to f...@fred.com. I invite user j...@james.com to become a member of my sharepoint site. j...@james.com receives an e-mail from f...@fred.com with their new username and password. This is a spoof, though, correct? At no time did sharepoint authenticate with whatever server is in control of fred.com and ask it to send an e-mail on behalf of fred. This is the way that my sharepointsite is working, and I cannot find any way to have it send the new user credentials using a mailserver or other authenticated mail source. Any ideas?     - Whats the use of profile import in MOSS 2007 Hello I am using MOSS 2007 B2. I have seen a feature called profile import which imports all the users from the active directory in the SSP. However I have noticed that I am not able to assign those users as memebers,contributors in portal sites. I still have to add a user, search through AD and then assign the user to my site.     - Code reuse in SharePoint We are customising SharePoint Portal Server for a client, which requires amended HTML for the header, footer, etc. Instead of pasting the same HTML throughout the templates and definitions I thought it would be easier to "include" this as a single file. This gives us the obvious benefit of only needing to change the included HTML once, should the need arise. Can anyone tell me the best way of doing this?     - Records Repository in sharepoint Hi I am exploring 'Records Managment' feature in SharePoint 2007 beta 2 release. I am trying to use the 'Send To Records Repository' command to send documents to my repository. To make the above work, as per my understanding, I need to do the following : 1. Create a Records Repository in my portal using out-of-the-box "Records Repository Site Template'. 2. Configure Record Repository settings in Central Admin on WSS 3.0. Here I specified the path of the repository site. 3. Create required document libraries in my repostory site and configure the Records Routing table as per the guideline provided. Henceforth, when I try to send documents to my repository using the send command, the operation fails, and I get an error that my site has not been configured properly. How do I capture user activity such as how many users are hitting the site
and how long they are logged in? Is there a table in SharePoint I can use to
capture these data?

You can enable usage analysis processing through central admin. It will not
tell you how long they are logged on but it will tell you that they logged
on. Other options at
