As far as I know, the only product on the market which can achieve this is
Commvault Galaxy backup for Sharepoint.
Has anyone produced a solution which uses any other software or the
utilities provided in Sharepoint?

The only solution I can come up with is to have another server with the same
setup then down the services and copy all of the files within the Sharepoint
directories over to the standby server. This could be scheduled.
This could then be complemented by doing a backup and restore of the sql
databases.
If the servers used within the farm are all aliased then you can set the
local hosts file on the server to point this alias locally. A quick dns
change would swap the live server over to the standby server in a DR
situation.

I don't know if this theory stands up because of issues with web parts
needing to be imported into the GAC.

I am desperate to use Sharepoint more within the business but can't because
there is no recovery solution. The company will not purchase commvault as it
is not used enough. you see my issue.

If anyone has any ideas on this or can think of any other possible solutions
or software please let me know.

If I manage to find anything I will let you all know.

Hello RHankin,
I know, as you mention, there are software utilities to Restore and make
SPS backups, but in my experiencie they are not a must. Yes, maybe makes
the things easier or quicklier, but I'm able to make a backup of my development
SPS portal from our SPS Dev Server, and then restore it in Production and
works just fine.
It is not easy, there are many steps involved, but it is not an impossible
task.

I suggest download and watch Live Meetings from Mindsharp Premium Content
( https://www.mindsharp.com/Default.aspx?premium=Default) about Moving a
Server Farm.
Hope this helps.

You are correct Commvault is able to backup all levels of Sharepoint
including the customization , there is also Avepoint and NSE . If it is a
single box installation of Sharepoint then Avepoints solution is fairly
reasonably priced.
You are also correct that the only other way to do this is to have a
seperate box to use for test restores. Then if a web part needs to be
restored to the live system you can export from one and import into the
other.

Are you able to backup and restore web parts or customized pages though?
None of the utilities included with SPS or WSS do this

As far as I am aware, Avepoint only does sites and document level restores -
not portal and webpart/customized pages. I have not heard of NSE.
I trialled DocAve 3.1 and found it very slow to use but it restored single
files well. All of these systems seem to be aimed at recovering documents
and sites should you have a small mishap. Commvault is the only one that
does full disaster recovery as it backs up web parts too

Avepoint 3.1 can backup customization , webparts and portal areas but you
must buy the portal and wss version not the wss standalone version.

I have spoke to Avepoint and they told me that by using their products DocAve
& SPDR it will do complete backup EXCEPT webparts.

I think I am going to need to maintain a standby server and just deploy
webparts on both live and standby. Unfortunately this would be the most
expensive solution as it would require a second license for Sharepoint Portal
Server.

I agree it is misleading. Plus the product is horrible to use. It gets the

Yes totally agree about the UI , we installed it for a client last month and
was not overlly impressed with the new interface , especially considering
their massive price hike for the new version.
Interesting clarification on the web part backup though. Thanks for sharing

Re: Backup Sharepoint with Web Parts & Customization by goopie

ive put up a few posts already for this product we use only because it
is very good for the price and they are very good with us. It performs
item level restores and dynamic backups, called backup Elite SC by
Webfox Corp. (www.webfox.ca) . includes users and permissions for sites
(but not lists unfortuneatly), backs up all sites and sub sites
individually, for 499usd. It just grabs all new asites automatically,
automates and enhances tools out of the box for sharepoint. also i use
it to move sites from our test to production, that is where we save
most time,
We looked at a few other options, but they were pricey and i agree
about the user interface.. we keep web parts on cd and just restore if
needed

Does anyone know of product that can keep restraint on list
relationships? So if we delete item 'A' from the Master list, all
children in child list will automatically be deleted..?

thanks
