custom CBitmap class
In an effort to make it easier for me to work with bitmaps, without MFC or
ATL, I created this class.
Nothing spectacular, but I'm wondering if this leaks memory or needs
improvement.
The thing I find most ugly in writing classes to use with native code, is
the HINSTANCE required for many functions.. getting this HINSTANCE seems to
be done by storing this in a global variable and refencing it.
I store it in
HINSTANCE g_hInst;
This isn't very portable, because my classes then need to reference to this
by defining
extern HINSTANCE g_hInst;
Shouldn't there be a way to get the instance handle through some API's
instead ?
Anyway, most important is to make sure this class is usable and doesn't leak
any memory.

WSPStringToAddress problem in LSP
Hi all
I have a LSP in PPC.
It seems that "WSPStringToAddress" function is always failing because
its getting an URL. But this function doesn't resolve URLs. It just
converts dot format numeric address to socket address format.
What can I do in LSP to avoid this failure?
Actually my real problem is,
For some reason "the connection arrow icon at the top of the device is
always broken even though ANY medium is connected and working fine and
the LSP gets all the traffic properly".
I went thru all the calls and this is one call that always failed. I am
not sure this is the one causing the problem but atleast if I make this
fucntion right, who knows, connection icons might be OK :-)

finding executable directory
Hi,
i am using the following to return the path to my executable:
Path.GetDirectoryName(System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetModules()[0].FullyQualifiedName);
the problem is, this is always return //Program Files/<AppFolder>
It doesn't appear to be driven off where the executable is located, but
rather, what settings you use in VS for Project
Properties->Device->Output path Folder.
so when i am testing/debugging, it is returning the wrong directory,
since my executable is located in /bin/release at that time.

windows mobile 5.0 sdk problem
hi,
i recently ordered the mobile 5.0 eval kit and installed VS 2005 Beta 2
and Mobile 5.0 SDK on Virtual PC 2004. everthing works fine but project
templetes for PPC 5.0 & SP 5.0 in the new project dialog does NOT
appears, so i can't make apps for 5.0. but the Mobile 5.0 options do
appears in the device toolbar and i can connect and run the emulator
manually.
does anybody experienced this problem ?
i am using VS.Beta 2 on Windows 2000 inside MS Virtual Machince 2004,
is this becuase Virtual Machine ? i have already reinstalled evrything
including OS.

Killing Notification dialogues
Hi,
i have an app i wrote which can intercept the hardware keys and do
something. One of the "something" i would like to do is close
dialogues when a certain key is pressed. How can i do this?
By "dialogues", i mean modal forms AND those bubble notifications on
the taskbar.
i know how to find a window by it's class, and i know how to send a
WM_CLOSE message. i also have a key handler class that can handle the
hardware keys "globally" (meaning it doesn't matter what app i am in, i
detect when a key is pressed)...
my problem is, i can't seem to detect when one of those lil taskbar
bubble notification dialogue appears and i cant seem to "find" them. I
assume when the show up, the have the focus, since if i am typing and
they appear, i have to click back to where i was to continue typing.
However, GetActiveWindow does not return a valid Ptr/Handle when they
pop up. I also cannot find them because i do not know the Window Class
for these notification dialogues and i am currently not able to get
Remote Spy going on my machine for some reason.

Is there maximum packet size for GPRS transmission?
Hi,
I just wrote an application for PocketPC 2003, or to be exact, my newly
bought Mini O2. There is a TcpClient on the O2, while server application on
a PC.
If run using WiFi adapter connecting to its public IP (Server on PC), it
works.... without any flaw... except initial connection is abit slow like 2
seconds compare to direct private LAN WiFi. And it work.....
The problem arise when I am using GPRS. I found while receiving the packet
half way, the functions terminated and was catched with errors.
So I am interested to know if there is any untold maximum packet size for
GPRS? If so, I will re-write some sub logic to transmit my data by multiple
of smaller blocks.
If you are curious, my original packets are relatively small, around
3kb~12kb.... It is why I did not write the code to send via multiple small
blocks. And it prove to work on WiFi. So it must be something to do with
GPRS....
Hope some GPRS gurus here can give some lights.....

Sending keys using button click
I have 11 buttons on my form. Buttons 0 through 9, backspace and period
(Looks like a calculator). When I click these buttons, I want to send that
key like you were pressing it on the keyboard. I was going to use
sendkeys.send but that isn't supported in the compact framework. I am
looking for something similar to sendkeys.send. Does anyone know how I can

connection from pc to pocketpc
Hi,
I want a connection from pc to pocketpc via gprs.
THe pocket pc has a "always on" gprs connection.
Now e want to "ping" to the pocket pc from our pc (or webserver etc...)
can somebody tell us, what to do ?
GPRS connection works fine ...
Ping from Pocket PC to PC (Webserver) also Works ...
BUT ping to pocket pc => no response.
THe Pocket PC seems to got an "local" IP from the provider ? ... 10.x.x.x ?
So how can I make a socket or a connection from PC to pocket pc if there is
no IP address ???

AudioVOx RTM8000 und RTM8000D
Hi,
we uses the AudioVOX RTM8000 CF Card (GPRS/GSM)
Now we want to uses a "data only sim card".
Thats a card we can use to make gprs connections but no phone calls.
Can we use this with the AudioVox RTM8000 Card.
We know that there is also a RTM8000D where D stand for "Data ONLY"
With the RTM8000D there are no functions for phone only for GPRS ...
so this shloud work together
BUT
we want to uses the RTM8000 with a "data only sim card" ...
OK we know that we can't make a call because of the "data only sim card" but
thats OK for us.
The question is: Do we have to my a "full" sim card (phone with gprs) or
can we also use a
"data only sim card" together with the RTM8000 card ???

Hello Experts,
Forgive me for asking such a generic query, this more of an
implementation issue. We're currently under planning stage to develop
TAPI components for both PocketPC and PC. We've also observed TAPI's
availability in two versions i.e. 2.x and 3.x. This is leading us to a
confusion of, which one to use!? One of the decision factors can be,
which one is more used/supported, both in terms technical and system
compatibilities?
So, it is very important to know about TAPI's support for PocketPC; 2.x
or 3.x?
I hope my english isn't too bad or I can re-phrase the query set to get
more explanation :)

Undocumented DLLs / Decompilation
Is there any way to use a DLL which you do not have the API for? I have
an iPAQ and the camera / consumer ir dll files on the rom (without an
API).
How hard would it be to work out the function calls / required
parameters / return values in such a case? (like, is it impossible?)
Would looking at the strings in the DLL file help?
Would a disassembler/decompiler help? Are there any for pocket pc's
(there are some for win32 and .net but I haven't been able to find one
for ppc).

How best to obtain current battery level on Pocket PC?
I'm writing my first major C#.net Pocket PC application. I'd like to
periodically monitor the battery level so I can report this to the user when
it gets too low.
To this end I've installed the OpenNETCF suite of controls. There is a
"BatteryLife" control in the suite but I get the following error when I try
to use it: "Can not marshal parameter #1: The type definition of thistype has
no layout information"
I have no idea what this error msg means. Any ideas?
I I can't get it working, can you give me some tips about how to get the
current battery level?

moving Bitmap between managed and unmanaged code
I am trying to move a Bitmap between managed and unmanaged code, so that I
can use the Imaging API. The latter is a series of COM interfaces, so I am
trying to use it from a dll written in C++.
At the moment, I am trying to have the Imaging API create a thumbnail, and
display it in managed code. What I have done is:
1. Create a Bitmap in managed code (C#)
2. Use Bitmap.GetHBitmap to get the Bitmap handle
3. Pass the Bitmap handle to a dll procedure
4. In the dll procedure,
a. Load the bitmap into a Memory DC
b. Use IImage->Draw to draw the thumbnail (previously created in the
IImage) to the Memory DC
c. Then clean up and return to the calling C# code
5. Display the Bitmap in response to the Paint event in the C# code
What happens is, a black bitmap is displayed.
No doubt my understanding of how all this should work is in some way flawed,
but this P/Invoke stuff is confusing, and I'd appreciate any assistance. I've
included some of the code below.

Hi,
i have my evc++ application and GUI is HTML based.
when i exit from the HTML button(link) im able to exit peacefully
but i haev few dialogs on the app for volume control etc.
but when i try to exit from that dialof buttons i have problems such as
The files onthe SD Card gets corrupted sortof. i have to soft reset the pda
to get back the files from the SD Card.
im using the following code.

In the .h file there are this code:

Camera on iPAQ
has anyone managed to use the built-in camera on the hp ipaqs (eg.
rx3715) without using the pay-for-sdk from hp? is there a DLL that can
be invoked?
on the actual ipaq, the default software for the camera is
"hpcamapp.exe". would there be a way to disassemble the executable to
work out what's going on or would this be too difficult?

Confusion over GetOpenFileName
All,
I can get the File Open dialog to come up, showing the filter that I want,
etc. And I see several files to select from. However, I'm not sure why I
can only "Cancel" this dialog; I cannot click on a file to open it! In
other words, the call to GetOpenFileName never returns. Why is there no OK
button to select? Here is my code:

did a little looking around for this, but I could not find anything
that provided any help. I am trying to write an application that
creates some mail folders, and save messages to them. I already have
the part finished that saves messages to the inbox, I just cannot find
out how to create and save messages to a new folder. If anyone can
provide any sample code or tips to get this to work would be

HttpWebRequest.GetResponse() freezes application
I use the HttpWebRequest.GetResponse() method to know if the IIS server
is online for my VB.NET / Visual Studio 2003 / Compact Framework 1.0
application. For some reason unknown to me, this line of code can work
a whole day without a hitch, with multiple runs of the application, but
sometimes it goes into some kind of nasty tantrum where I have to try
all sorts of things, such as adding random code in different part of my
subroutine, to stop it from freezing my application. Does anyone know
why this is happening, and how it can be fixed? My subroutine is posted
below.

I have tried unsuccesfully to locate and download a copy of "eMbedded Visual
Basic 3.0"
I was given reference to it by the book "Special Edition: Using Microsoft
Visual Basic .NET" written by Brian Siler and Jeff Spotts.
The ISBN of this book is 0-7987-2572-X. If this helps or hinders. It was
Copyrighted in 2002. All I can find on the MS website is Developer 2005,
which uses eMbedded C++. The problem there is, I don't know C++.

2. Is it possible to update the icon through the SHNotificationUpdate()
method? I want to update the icon on the tray (when the buble isnt
visible), every thime I called the SHNotificationUpdate() with the
correct flags it will not update it, I have to remove and then add the
notification back again.
3. What is the LPARAM in the SHNOTIFICATIONDATA struc good for? In the
struct I can setup the LPARAM, but why? When I get WM_COMMAND for
clicking on a button, it does not have the same LPARAM as I set in the
struct.
4. I got an app that need to display a notification that is always
accessible. ie, the icon should always reside on the tray. (Clicking on
it will show the bubble). I got everything thing setup, I got my three
buttons in the bubble, I got a wnd sink listener for the notification
struct that listens on WM_COMMAND. The buttons that are in the bubble
will close the bubble, but the notification icon (in the tray)
disappears as well. Why does it disappear, and what do I do to stop it?
My bubble HTML looks like this:

When I click on button 1, the icon and bubble will disappear.

disappears as it should BUT I dont get any WM_COMMAND. (Only one
WM_NOTIFY, probably because the wnd is closed).
When I click on button 55, the icon and bubble will disappear.
My struct for adding it:

Text to Speech
I'm wondering what the latest/greatest options are for WM 2003 with
respect to text-to-speech. After some hunting via Deja/Google it seems:
- No SAPI support exists, so no generic interface to use and allow third
party plug-ins...therefore all TTS support must be targeted at a specific
engine/SDK.
- A fully Microsoft-based solution only exists with the new Speech Server.
....please correct me if I'm wrong :-)
Regardless of the above, I'm curious how the commercially available
engines rate. If anyone has some insight/opinions to share I'd greatly
appreciate it!

Hi,
As the title indicated, I try playing a native Windows MPEG4 encoded AVI
file with no sound, it fail to play back on my Mini O2.
Does it only play ASF format?

I've been following some old threads about database programming with
eVC and there are a few references to .NetCF. Presumably this is a
module for VS .Net that allows me to build for ppc, and supercedes eVC3
& 4?
My .Net2003 DVD makes reference to it but as far as I can see there is
nothing installed and no installer.

dialog based wizard
Hi,
Using native API, what is best way to create a 'wizard' type application
based on dialog box templates?
(Wizard is where multiple dialog boxes are displayed in sequential order,
which you can switch between using buttons like "Next" and "Previous")
Shoudl I create a dialog box, then destroy it and create the next one, or
create all of them and handle switching between pages by making dialog boxes
visible or invisible..
I do not wish to use property sheets, or tabs, because I want to be
smartphone compatible.
I think if I create these dialog pages and destroy them, between switches
the today screen might flash because there will be an intermediate time
where there are no windows visible. Perhaps create next page, then hide
previous..
What is the common way (how is it done on smartphone?)
Also, my main application window will be a dialog. And dialogs have a
windows classname of "Dialog", correct?
Is it possible for me to use my own classname to better use "FindWindow" ?
Or is it possible for me to create a generic window, which I register
myself, with my own classname, and then subclass a dialog box with it or
something?

Mobile Device Application for inventory tracking
Hello.
I'm working on a project at work that deals with a handheld scanner for
inventory tracking. Currently, we use VisualCE 9.0 to build our form.
Its very simple, but that's the downside. We'd like to implement some
advanced features, which VCE doesn't support.
How well do .NET languages run on Mobile Devices? Our scanner is a
PocketPC-based model from LXE. Our resources are not infinite, but if
it can be justified, our IT department (from India, no less) can begin
development on a new application. Here are some of the business
requirements:
1. Must be very easy to use with a very short learning curve.
2. Must be very fast, ie no clicking verification windows, tabbing to
the next field, but still have validation rules for the fields.
3. Must have a database back-end. A master file must be loaded and
records processed from this master. As they are processed, they must be
deleted to assure no duplicate work is completed. Typically, there will
be upwards of 10,000 records at any given time, with an upper echelon
well into the 100,000s.
4. Must be able to integrate with Access. This could be discarded if an
additional application could be built that resides on a desktop, but
the scanner must be able to communicate with this application. That's
why Access seems to be the easy way out.
Again, how easy is it to develop PocketPC applications using .NET? I
have some C# experience, but can't remember if its an option or not.

Viewing an external camera on a Pocket PC
Hello all,
I'm checking to see if this is possible, and if so, where do I go to find
out more.
I want to take the feed of a security camera, and display it on my handheld.
One camera might be a web cam, one might be a standard security camera. What
would I need to do to get the picture on my pocket pc? What do I need to get
a non-computer based camera to show up on the network?

Help with first Pocket PC App.

I am entertaining the idea of creating an application for my Pocket PC 2003.
I will be starting at the ground floor. Have never programmed before
I have received the DVD disk of the SDK for Windows Mobile 2003-based Pocket
PC.
But it is hard to know were to start.
The app. is intended to send commands over a RS232 to a piece of measuring
test equipment. There is only about 6 commands. Also the test equipment will
send 'data dumps' to the Pocket PC. I understand that Hyper terminal work
well for this on a PC. So I was thinking a GUI interfaced hypertermal kind of
thing.
Any suggestions on terms and technologies to learn would be great. Also, if
any of you have some good resources to suggest to a "newbie" like me, I'd

Limit of network APIs
Hi,
I am not really a specialist on PPC programming so ...
I would like to know if it is possible to create a program on PCC that will
be able to read/write network frames ? For example, reading frames such as
Netmon on Windows (TCP, IP, ARP, ...), ... and also send frames either at
the TCP/IP level or lower on the OSI model. I would like to use a PCC using
a WiFi card working in 'promiscuous' mode to be able to see all the frames.
If it is possible to do so, I would like to use the .net framework.
What do you think ? If you can advise me ;-)

Install / run from storage card.
I have an app created with pocketpccreations applications. This contains the
exe file, custom points(DLL's) and my own forms. I need to be able to send a
client a storage card with all the data on it.
When the card is installed the client has to find the exe file and create a
short cut to it within the programs folder. Is there a way to automates
this. EG when the card is put into the pocket pc automatically add a
shortcut to the exe file. Alternatively is there a method to copy all the
files to the internal memory and create a short cut to the exe file.
Any help or links appreciated.
