I have installed Pocket PC 2003 SDK, eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 and
ActiveSync 3.7.1. I am also using the emulator and Do Not have a
physical device.

How do you get the Pocket PC 2003 Emulator and ActiveSync to connect?
I have gone through all the help files and been through all the
newsgroups? One thing I read that I did not see - When configuring
the platform manager inside VC++4 and clicking on the properties of the
Pocket PC 2003 Emulator - the startup Server: drop down list box does
not have the startup server option. The only options that I have are
manual server and activesync.

Activesync tells my that my device (in this case Emulator) is not
detected. How do I get the two to talk to each other?
Thanks in advance

Please refer to the document "Using ActiveSync with the Emulator" in "Pocket
PC 2002 SDK" help file. That may give you some ideas.

Thanks for the reply - Pocket PC 2002 SDK indicates that you have to
use a straight through or null modem cable and your development pc has
to have two seriel ports to connect it to. My machine does not have
two seriel ports - that is why I started working with 2003. In any
event - I still cant get 2003 to work with activesync after reading the
help for both 2002 and 2003. I would appreciate any furthur help.
Thanks

Mmh, I have Transport "TCP/IP Transport for Windows CE" and "Emulator
Startup Server" as Startup Server. That is the way I can debug on my
emulator. May be there is a problem with your installation or... IIRC
there was something with network adapters you need if you want to use
the emulator. I don't have any other ideas.

perhaps only bad news then

according to
http://www.daycounter.com/EmulatorActiveSync.html
if you don't have 2 serial ports you're stuffed.

I think this is non-sensical, given the miriad of non-serial ways to active
sync with a modern device.
