Hello everyone,

In my understanding, Windows OS for device is divided into two
sub-categories, Windows Mobile and Window Embedded. And in Window Mobile,
there are two sub-categories, Window Mobile Pocket PC Edition and Windows
Mobile Smart Phone Edition.

Is my understanding correct?

I have a further question, what is the common points and differences between
Windows Mobile Pocket PC Edition and Windows Mobile Smart Phone Edition?

thanks in advance,

George

You are very definitely not the only person whose been confused.
Windows CE is an operating system. Several platforms, including Pocket
PCs and Smartphones are based on the operating system, but adding a
few functions, removing a few functions, adding applications, and
specifying hardware. Starting recently, Pocket PCs and Smartphones
have been lumped together (mostly for marketing, I think) as Windows
Mobile. The following should help:

Much of the underlying software is the same. Smartphones don't support
mice or similar. I haven't worked with Smartphones much, but I think
carriers often impose restrictions (like strict registration) on
software installation. Smartphones usually have smaller screens.

Thanks Robert!

Let me confirm with you that Window CE is the core OS, and derived on that,
there are two editions, called Pocket PC and Smart Phone, right?

And now Microsoft is going to integrate the two types of veriations into one
name, called Windows Mobile. Is that also correct?

George

Sort of. Platforms are more than just "editions" of the operating
system; each includes _hardware_ specifications and applications.

Sort of. Microsoft new refers to Windows Mobile for Pocket PC, Windows
Mobile for Pocket PC Phone Edition, and Windows Mobile for Smartphone.
And they are trying to make all three similar. But mostly these are
just names. And many folks ignore the Windows Mobile part.
