My situation is that a device driver for a CF A2D device has been built with MFC3 targetting Pocket PC 2002 devices (eg iPaqs). This requires: - The device DLL - mfc300.dll - mfc300d.dll - docview.dll With a little dexterity I have been able to install and program the device with EVC 4 on a Pocket PC 2003 (iPaq) device. I want to run the A2D device on an embedded CE 4.2 device: Intrinsyc CefrBoard (PXA255). I can't run the device install (via activesync (AS)) to the device when the image is up becuase AS install says the device is not suitable (** see footnote). So I try tried the copy mode. I can get all of the files except docview.dll. When I try to copy it from the iPaq the system won't let me (says its busy). Have tried rebooting device and copying (via activesync and evc File tool) but fails. A rebuild of the device driver with MFC4 is in order but don't have source code. Any ideas?? ================ Footnote: Its a real pain that Activesync install won't let you install PPC2003 devices to embedded CE.NET 4.2 devices when using the same device hardware (ie CF) and embedded COU is XSCAL (same as iPaq). Surely tthis should be an option (you decide) liek some of the Socket device installs. Is there a way around this. I have partially built a program that snapshots file system and registry before and after an install and differences.     - CeAppMgr shows "invalid setup file" message Hi. I'm trying to use CeAppMgr to install my application. I've created an ini file which refers to a cab file in the same directory as the ini file. When I try to install, I keep getting the following message: "Application Manager cannot install this application on your mobile device due to an invalid setup file. Reinstall and try again." When I simply copy the cab file over to the device and click on it, it installs fine. Thus, I'm assuming something is wrong with the ini file. Here's what it looks like (note that there is no linefeed after the last line-- the same as in an ini file which I have used successfully). Can anyone see anything wrong? I have used eVisual Basic 3.0 (including related tools) to code for my old Win2002 Pocket PC phone edition.     - BitBlt operations overwrite existing bitmap controls in the dialog I am using Visual C++ 6.0 to design a dialog-based GUI. I first put a few CStatic bitmap controls in the dialog with ResourceView, then I decide to draw a solid square and a few circles underneath as background. To draw the background, I first created a compatible memory device, then draw on the memory device, finally use Bitblt function to copy the memory device context to the current device context. The centers of the solid square and circles are not static, actually every second my software redraw them. However, I found only for the first second the CStatic bitmap controls are displayed in the dialog, then it disappeared, obviously was overwritten by the "background". It confused me since the same codes I wrote in eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 worked perfect for PPC2003, and the bitmap controls were never overwritten by the background. I partly solved this problem by setting the visibility state of the bitmap controls to off and then on for every second. However, I do not like the flicker associated.     - Conversion mdb/cdb hangs iPaq I have a 7MB Access DB, with one table and two indexes. I am attempting to copy it to my iPaq, but at about 2.7MB, the iPaq hangs, bringing the copying/conversion process to a dead stop. I've looked at the data, hard-booted the iPaq, done everything I can think of, but cannot find a cause or solution. The table has about 33,000 rows, and 7 columns (3 text and 4 integer). The text columns don't exceeed 64 characters. Has anybody out there had a similar problem? Any advice? The funny thing is, this used to copy over.     - Opening files (fopen) and memory buffering Embedded C++ 4, MFC I want to open a PDB file (read only) and dynamically access the contents of the file. I need to leave the file open for the duration of the application. My question is, when I open the file and get a pointer to its contents, will Windows make a copy of the file in memory (duplicating it in storage and heap), or will I be accessing the file directly from storage? The alternative is to serialize all of my objects from a file. When I serialize, though, I am loading all of my data into memory, effectively making a copy of it. So it will exist in storage, as well as on the heap. I am trying to avoid this by storing the data in a PDB and only retrieving a pointer to what I need and using it directly from storage. So instead of having a member variable, I have a get() function that retrieves the variable direclty from storage when I need it. If the file gets copied to a buffer when I open it, though, it kind of defeats the purpose. I am not saving any memory and would be better of just serializing. Thanks.     - Power button problem All, I noticed a problem with the usability of my PPC 2003 when running my application (written in eVC4, hidden window, basic socket operations, some database and some UI processing). It seems that after a long usage (half a day) whenever you press the power button to shut down the device, it takes around 20 seconds to actually action it. During this time the device's screen is still on, although the device is not responsive. Eventually, it does shut down the screen and presumably suspends all the running threads/processes. That reproduces consistently and as soon as I stop my application, the power button re-becomes responsive. I was wondering if anybody else noticed these effects and whether anybody could give some explanations about what actually is going on with an application when the user presses the Power button, what could cause it to behave as explained.     - Problem with Virtual Switched networking in emulator I set the PPC 2003 Emulator to use Virtual Switched networking (the Test was successful). I then go in the emulator, connect to a share on my local PC and select a file to copy. When I paste the file in a folder local to the emulator (ie: My Device) I get a "Bad network path. ..." error. How can I solve this problem??? I used to do this process using NAT but I need Virtual Switched networking because my application has problems to receive data over winsock due to NAT.     - ntext column with 256 chars does not ger synch Hello all, I have an SQL table with a ntext column. That column contains data with 256 characters and more. I have also a pocket pc with SQL CE 2.0 with the same table/column and an ntext datatype. Everytime I sync and the data (SQL server) in the column has 255 charaters and less the sync will work successfully. This same column with 256 characters and more will not get sync on my pocket pc 2003. The row will get created but no data for that column. Initialy, on the SQL server, my column was a nvarchar(2000), i thought that could conflict with SQL CE because nvarchar datatype has a max character of 255. But the result didn't change. I also ran an update statement on the SQL CE DB to make sure the column could hold more than 255 characters and I was successfull since it's an ntext. The queries for the sync are being done through http. Could that be the issue? Is there some sort of configuration that I missed? NOTE: I'm using appforge. Any help would be appreciated.     - multiproject solution - deployment problems Hi there, I use VS.NET 2003 to develop pocket PC applications using Pocket Framework. I have no problems with Pocket Framework. My problem is the solution that has two projects: a class library and a main module. I set the project dependency from main module to the class library and everything compiles ok, I can see an executable and a library in /bin folder. [I use the same technique in WinForms development for 2 years] However, when I try to deploy the solution to the emulator or the PocketPC device, I face two problems: 1) I am asked where to deploy the class library and then I am asked again where to deploy the main executable. I wish I was asked once and both modules were deployed in the same place. 2) the class library is not deployed at all. by default it was set to be deployed to another directory than the main module (properties/Deploy). no matter if I change that setting to the same directory as the main module, the library is not deployed onto the device. I found that there are no problem to retrieve all integer but I always can't retrieve some strings (not all strings in the rgProps, but some...) I found there are no problem if I do the same things but have little size of rgProps array (just contain one integer and one string). I suspect it is cause by memory allocation of rgProps. I want to develop for hand held devices using windows mobile. The vs.net 2003 ibuyspy compact framework sample runs fine on the handheld when compiled and run. My problem is how to setup a vb.net project which uses sql server ce as backend and how to move/install to handheld when needed.     - Corrupted Categories for Contacts? All of a sudden I can no longer view my contacts by some categories on my IPAQ 1945? Pocket PC ver 4.20.1081. I have 12 contact categories. If I go to Contacts I can still narrow my list of contacts to the six categories that initially display. However if I try to select "More.." to view my other categories, the left portion of my display (where the "Categories" would normally display) is blank and the contacts stop working until I reboot. I tried rebooting with same results. My PC still has all my contacts and can narrow my contacts by all my categories just fine. Syncronization works OK.     - Show symbols in a Win32 application I would like to display a "sigma" symbol in my Win32 application built with Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0. I found the corresponding UNICODE number is 03C3, which was equal to 963 in decimal, then put it to the following codes. However, the "sigma" symbol was not displayed correctly. Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right group, but I can't find one that better
fits my subject...

I'm having problems deploying a simple MFC project to the PocketPC emulator
on Visual Studio 2005.... I've just installed it and went through the
wizard... I built it for the emulator and when I deploy it visual studio
just hangs....

Any suggestions?

Vittorio,

With VS2005 Beta 1, if you attempt to deploy to emulator or device
and a connection cannot be established to the device, VS just sits
there - this is a known problem with the beta of Whidbey. You have
to kill the process from Task Manager and even restart the PC at times
to get working again.

The thing you need to solve is why VS2005 is not able to connect to your
device
or the emulator. Have you set the correct platform in the Configuration
Manager for your Smart Device project? If Tools --> Connect to Device
fails, you have an issue. Make sure your development PC has is on
a network - the emulator in Whidbey still requires you to have a PC
with an IP address.

I did a large PPC demo for Microsoft back in June using Whidbey and
this issue of connection to the emulator or device failing and just sitting
there cost me a LOT of time and restarts. I have reported it to the
Visual Studio team and I'm sure it will be addressed (with at least some
sort of timeout like in VS.Net 2003) before release.
