    - Pocket PC service Hi All: I wanted the program started when the system boots. And known that implement it as a service could accomplish that I tried a demo (http://www.pocketpcdn.com/articles/services.html) which will be dispaly a messagebox when the system boots but with no luck: I put the demo dll in to Windows folder and manually create the according registry entries under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\MyServ" then reboot the device but with no message box pops up. Is there something I've missed? In addition how's the registry gonna be created first in order to let service.exe start the thread when the program ready to release, create a package which will do that? Is it the only way?     - ActiveSync Issues on developing a usb driver. I am developing a USB function driver for Pocket PC 2005(Phone Edition). The device communicate with the desktop through RNDIS function class. There are 2 problems after ActiveSync connected. 1. When select Add/Remove Programs item from tools menu, Sometime it can retrieve data, and give a list of installed program, but most of all, it prompts "Unable to retrieve the mobile device information. Please reconnect and try again". 2. When click the "Explore" button, the folders in the device can be showed in the explorer at the first time, but when you close the explorer, then click the "Explore" button again, there is nothing listed in the new explorer.     - Mimic a Submit Button in the HTML Control Hello, Does anyone know how to mimic a "Submit" Button in the HTML Control in Pocket PCs? There is a solution for PCs using COM Ptrs, IHTMLFormElement and IHTMLDocuments...but these interfaces are not found in embedded systems. What I'm trying to do is grab form data from an html page without the user clicking on the "Submit" button. I have to (behind the scene) simulate the click so it can send a notification message to NM_HOTSPOT, which is where my form data is held. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!     - Aaaaarghhh!!! Drawing a circle? How difficult can it be to draw a circle and a couple of lines in VS 2005 VB.net??????? It was so much easier when I could just select a tool and draw them at design time! This has got me really frustrated, and feeling pretty stupid. All I want to do is to display a circle on a pocket PC screen (WM5) have it intersected with a horizontal and vertical line so that it looks like the cross hairs on a gun sight. I then want a smaller crosshair in the middle that can be moved around by means of four buttons, one each for up, down, left and right. Each time a button is clicked I want the small crosshair to move .01mm in the corrosponding direction. The large crosshair will always remain stationary, thus referencing the centre of the circle I'm a real novice programmer and this is driving me mad.     - EVC3, EVC4 or VStudio 2005? Hi Everyone, I have to maintain 2 programs one is PocketPC 2003 app and the other is WinCE application. In the past the Pocket PC program was compiled using evc3 and the WinCE was created and compiled using evc4. I have just had to rebuild my development computer and I can't compile either one of the projects. (I can't seem to get all the pieces together!). Anyway, I tried to open the PocketPC project (evc3) in VS2005 put it wouldn't compile there either. wcesock.h was missing. Anyway, before I get too deep into this conversion, I wanted to know which compiler I should use. Should I convert the two program to VS2005? Thanks AliR.     - Accessing System Tray Icons Here's what I'm trying to do: I've got a PocketPC device which has a particular (third party) application loaded, and it has an icon which is displayed in the System Tray (lower right corner); the app uses this icon to display the app's status. I'm writing an app which needs to run in full screen, to disallow end-user access to the Start Button, etc. "Kiosk Mode." My customer wants my app to show the third-party app's icon, that way if that app's status changes, they can see its status without accessing the Start Menu.     - Visual Studio 2005 ServicePack 1 destroys release builds for WinCE 5 PocketPC I have a project that I've been developing for many years and various CE platforms. It was running without any problems on WinCE 5 PocketPC devices as built by Visual Studio 2005 and Win Mobile 5 PocketPC SDK. It uses MFC and is native C++. When built properly the executable is about 985kB. After installing Service Pack1 the project builds to the size of 887kB and fails on a device (when opening dialogs like property sheets...). Debug version runs just fine on the Visual Studio emulator. Trying to run the SP1 built release version on the emulator generates a microsoft error announcement for gwes.exe with a suggestion to send report to Microsoft. I've checked this on three different machines with VS 2005 SP1 and three without SP1. Uninstalling VS 2005 and WinMobile 5 SDK and re-installing them without SP1 solves the problem.     - Distinguish Palm vs Pocket PC over Infrared? Does anyone know how to distinguish between a Palm and a Pocket PC over IR? During discovery, I can get the IRDA_DEVICE_INFO structure and it has device name (which is user configurable -- won't work). But it also has irdaDeviceHints1 and irdaDeviceHints2. Are these standard or fairly standard on PDA's? I get 0x82 and 0x20 for Palms and 0x92, 0x24 for two Pocket PC's and 0x82, 0x24 for the other PPC.     - Extending Call Log menu Hi, I've build the Medical Care sample from SDK and it works great on contacts menu but when I change the registry path to modify the Call Log menu ([HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Extensions\ContextMenus\Phone\Log] - I'm using the PPC device) its take no effect.     - RegisterHotKey, UnregisterFunc1 VK_F1,VK_ F2; UnregisterHotKey doesn't work ? Hi, I have a question about hotkeys on a PocketPC with Windows Mobel 5. I am trying to program the two hardware buttons that are located immediatly below the screen, the ones with which you normally operate th menubar softkeys. My problem is not that it doesn't work; I found out from a google search that I need to call UnregisterFunc1() first and then RegisterHotKey with virtual key codes VK_F1 and VK_F2. My problem is that the UnregisterHotKey that I do on these virtual key codes doesn't seem to work: after my program has terminated, the buttons don't do anything any more; they should have gone back to their old behavior, which is to operate menu bars of other applications, but they don't do that any more. The only thing I can do to restore this functionality is to reset the device. A google search learned that lots of people experience the same problem, but no solution was offered other than using GXOpenInput(), but I can't use that, because I don't want to affect the behavior of any of the other buttons.     - WM5: ToolBar vs. SoftKeys: which to use? Hi everybody, I am rewriting a GIS application using .NET CF (2.0) that was originally written for PalmOS. The main target platform should be Windows Mobile 5.0 (What would be the reasons to support PPC 2003 ?) Reading the UI Guidlines, I figured, that the preferred way to handle menus is to use softkeys (a.k.a. using two menus or command butttons) However, for my application it seems to be more appropriate to have a menu bar and a tool bar that shows certain commands as icons. I wonder what the drawbacks would be, when using toolbars instead of being limited to two softkeys. The major advantage is obvious: I would not loose another line to display an additional toolbar. What is the intention of Microsoft to impose what I would call a limitation? Is there more to it than having an app that is NOT "designed for Windows Mobile 5.0"? What about if an app that is originally designed for WM5 (using only two softkeys) is run on PPC 2003? What about smartphones running WM5?     - MI5 Persecution: Dirk Gently on the Toronto Case Dirk was on the West Coast when he got the call. An old friend at the Toronto police department thought he would like to fly up and take a look at a homicide which had occurred the previous evening. He decided to skip the last day at the World Holistics conference and take the next plane out of San Francisco. The flight was bad; Dirk had been hit on the back of the head by the Newspaper trolley, the drinks trolley, the dinner trolley and now the gift trolley. When the hostesses weren?t trying to tear his arm off they pestered him to stop leaning into the aisle - ignoring the fact that the guy next to him was taking up one and a half seats. Air Canada used to be the flight which was so good you just didn?t wanna get off - on this occasion Dirk would be glad to see the back of the plane and the over sized alternative comedian wedged into the window seat. After breathing in a couple of lungfulls of crisp Canadian air Dirk took a taxi into town. There was a small group of demonstrators outside the MacDonalds and the taxi driver insisted on stopping on the opposite side of the street. ?Don?t Eat Meat? the placards read and the demonstrators chanted. A couple of policemen where stopping the crowd entering the restaurant itself - one held up his arm and challenged Dirk. A wave of the fax he had been sent and the policeman pushed open the door. There were few customers in the restaurant. Not surprising really with a demonstration going on outside, half the dining area roped off with tape and a dead body seated at one of the tables. ?Mr Gently sir? the officer in charge called out as he peeled one end of the tape off a column ?We were told not to touch anything til? you got here?. The body of the man slumped awkwardly in a chair. Then even a dead body would start getting uncomfortable in a MacDonalds chair after twenty minutes - and this one had been there for at least eighteen hours. Two back legs and the tail of a cat hung out of the man?s gaping mouth. Dirk turned to the officer, ?I suppose you are going to tell me this is the darndest thing you ever saw?? ?Ain?t this the darnd...?. The officer seemed annoyed that Dirk had second guessed him. ?We?re removing the body in a few minutes, so if you can get through as quick as possible? ?Many people eat cats in fast food restaurants?? Dirk asked and without waiting for an answer leant over the table to pick up an untouched burger. ?And what?s this?? he asked waving it in front of the officers face. ?It?s a Vedgie Burger? The waitress, who was cleaning one of the adjacent tables, shouted across. She walked over to Dirk. ?We started doing them because of that lot out there? she nodded towards the protesters who were pressing there faces against the windows ?They?re called Linda McCartney Vedgie burgers - ever heard of them?? Dirk suddenly felt faint, perhaps a combination of hunger and jet lag. ?This is deja vu all over again? he thought to himself. He glanced at policemen - at the badge on his shoulder ?OPD? but this wasn?t Ontario this was Toronto. OPD - Officially Pronounced Dead. It dawned on Dirk what was happening, he knew what he would see if he looked out of the window. Sure enough, there it was, the Volkswagen Beetle parked across the road - number plate 28IF - 28 IF Paul McCartney had lived. And amongst the lyrics of the song blaring out into the restaurant he could pick out the words ?I buried Paul?. Now it was though Dirk was viewing the whole scene though a TV screen. This was conspiracy. Not -a- conspiracy, or -the- conspiracy, but just plain conspiracy. ?You look faint - are you OK mister? The waitress asked. Dirk shook his head ?Probably a bit hungry? Then to economise on dialogue took out a pack of cigarettes and held it out towards the girl. She was about to take one but Dirk snatched the pack away, held it up to his mouth and drew out two cigarettes. He lit both then passed one of them to the girl. It was the closest he had come to a sexual encounter in three months. ?Want a Burger?? the waitress asked. Dirk looked down at the Vedgie Burger on the table. ?No thanks - just a plate of fries? The waitress walked away and Dirk looked around the room. Apart from a family seated in the far corner there was only one other person in the restaurant - and he wasn?t eating. The guy was about mid twenties and had straggling, shoulder length hair. On the table in front of him were lots of pieces of paper cut into squares. Every so often he would pick up a camcorder and pan it around the room and then, when he was finished, speak into a microphone which was attached to a tape recorder. Dirk walked over to where the man was sitting. The small pieces of paper had paragraphs of text written on them and were stuck to the top of table with blobs of mustard. Lines had been drawn, some solid some dotted, on the table top with a marker pen. The lines ran from one piece of paper to another. ?What are the lines for?? Dirk asked, realising straight away that ?What the hell are you doing?? would be more appropriate. ?You see? The man replied nervously ?The dotted lines are weak links and the solid lines are strong links. The dotted lines are things which are happening in the rest of the world and the solid lines are things which are happening to me. Now you see I draw over a dotted line, replacing it with a solid line, when I can link something back to me. Like this? The pen squeaked over the Formica and before Dirk could interrupt the man added. ?You see I lost my short term memory and, as a consequence have a very short attention span. I write down, record and film everything then put it all together later? ?So? Dirk interrupted. ?You filmed what happened here?? ?Yes, yes, it?s here on this tape? The man pushed the cassette across the table. On the label the words ?Grassy Knoll? had been crossed through and replaced with ?MacDonalds?. Suddenly the man sprung from his seat. Dirk turned and saw that the body was being removed on a stretcher. As it passed the man picked a small object off the edge of the stretcher itself. ?This is important? he said, laying a blood stained bullet on one of the small pieces of paper on the table. Suddenly the room was filled with a deafening throbbing sound as a Black Helicopter landed in the street outside. Two men in United Nations uniforms got out and collected the stretcher. Back at the table the long haired man was replacing all the dotted lines with solid ones. Dirk panicked and began to walk backwards at some speed. Barging through the swing doors he stumbled into the kitchen, tripped and felt himself sink slowly into a large vat. ?The guys fallen into the batter? Dick heard someone shout before he sunk below the surface. He came to sitting in a chair with the batter solidifying all over his body. He surveyed the room through two eye-holes someone had cut. Suddenly the chair on which he was sitting was picked up carried through the restaurant and out of the building. As the chair was being lifted and put into the back of a van, Dirk caught a glimpse of the waitress following him. ?Your fries mister, your plate o...?. The doors of the van shut and Dirk tried desperately to steady himself as it sped across town. Eventually the doors flew open and Dirk was flung into the road at which point the solidified batter shattered and set him free. Standing up he found himself outside the international departures terminal of Toronto airport. In the departure lounge Dirk had time to reflect on the day?s events. He had got caught up in the conspiracy theories and the haphazard welding together of pieces of irrelevant information. It was time to catch the person who was operating the bizarre cognitive engine which appeared in front of him like a fairground mirror, distorting any flaw it could find in his own, fragile, map of the real world. Dirk leant into the aisle of the plane as it took off for London. The oversized person next to him swung his arms violently as he complained about every thing from the supper in a plastic tray to the state of British politics. With a shaven head and a badly fitting suit the man looked as though he could have worked behind the reception desk of the Kremlin. This is the easy way out and perhaps the safest. After all there you are sat, alone, in front of the screen. No body language between you some paranoid. No way of telling if he really is some gibbering psycho. Look at it too long and you be drawn in. Fall into the tangled database of weird links with him. Who knows he may be watching you, reassembling and linking your experiences with his. How sure are you of you own cognitive threads. Dirk, at first recoiled in horror, then felt a sense of anti climax. So this is what they hyped up to superstar status on the back of their own fears of madness. Dirk was reminded of the film ?A day on The Beach? where a submarine had set off to search a post nuclear World to track down a signal coming from a remote military base - only to find it was being sent by a Coke bottle half balanced on a Morse tapper. Outside the room the nurse waited for him. Because his nicotine craving had returned - and to avoid an awkward piece of dialogue - Dirk turned to her and asked . ?Patch??     - Wizard style dialbogbox Hi, On Windows, using MFC, the way to create a wizard, was to use CPropertySheet with CPropertyPages in wizard mode. How is this done best on PPC? My idea is to create dialog based application, which will be like CPropertySheet. I create different dialog boxes for each 'page': CPage1, CPage2, etc. I create each of them, using 'new' (modeless), and show/hide them to simulate walking through the pages.     - Visual Studio documentation pointer I'm somewhat used to working in IDEs, so I figured I could change the text of a menu item or two and get away with never having found where in this installation the local manual copy is (if I even have one). I'm using Visual Studio 2005 to work on a Windows Mobile 5 application for the iPaq. I wanted to change a menu option, so I went and changed its text in the menu editor VS has. Unfortunately the text that appeared on the screen stayed the same. I did also eliminate a couple of files with extensions I didn't recognize; was trying to cut down on the 'noise' from having copied a project and changed it to my own needs, and didn't see anything in these projects that looked relevant. I still don't know if they are. Anyway, I also then went and eliminated the string for the prompt I no longer wanted from the string table, figuring that an error message would tell me where I was missing something. No, the app runs fine, and responds to that menu pop-up fine, it just doesn't have any text on the softkey option button where it used to have the name I no longer want there.     - Touched Header Files Do Not Trigger Re-Compile I'm using Visual Studio 2005 Pro Edition. I seem to have a header file dependency issue. I have a small project that consists of 7 separate .h/.cpp files and a dozen or so classes. When I make changes to any particular header, and if that file is included in any .cpp file, that .cpp file will not recompile if the header file is touched. As a matter of fact, touching any header file will not cause any .cpp file to be recompiled. How can I control the file dependency with Visual Studio 2005? I figured for such a trivial operation, it would be automatic, but apparently not. Any time I touch a header file, I have to manually re-build the entire project just to get the .cpp file to refresh. I am not using pre-compiled headers. I've turned all that off. I did try to play with that part of it, but it didn't do anything better. Any ideas? Thanks.     - Custom Control Disabled in Toolbox I've created a couple controls (NETcf 2.0 SP1), which I put into a library. When I include the library project in a simple test application (VS solution), the controls show in the toolbox in a separate tab for the library namespace, and I'm able to drag the controls to a form, set properties and run OK. But when I remove the control library project from the solution, and then reference the dll in the application project's properties, I need to add the items to the toolbox manually (via "Choose Items ..."), and then they are disabled (they only show if I do "Show All" on the toolbox, and they are greyed out). Am I missing some steps? I used sn to create a key pair, and then gacutil to put in GAC, although I'm pretty unfamiliar with this process. Is there something else I'm missing? Also, could someone tell me the procedure to change the bitmap for the controls in the toolbox? I tried using the ToolboxBitmap attribute, but it seems unavailable for Netcf (as well as ToolboxItem).     - Hide OK Button on PPC 2003 and WM5 Hello, I've encountered a problem that is quite odd. I'm trying to hide the "OK" Button on the top right of a Dialog box. I've been using: ModifyStyle(0, WS_NONAVDONEBUTTON, SWP_NOSIZE); ::SHDoneButton(m_hWnd, SHDB_HIDE); It works on a HP iPAQ h4350 PPC2003, but doesn't on a Fujitsu LOOX PPC2003 or a Dell Axim X51V WM5.
