Hello,
I wanted to know if there are any smart card readers that are compatible
with Pocket PCs (connection through a USB port). It would be best if there
exists a compatible smart card reader that has bluetooth capability.
Is anyone aware of any such device??
Moreover I wanted to know how can one go about making an application that
runs on Pocket PC and uses the smart card reader functionalities.

Eagerly waiting for suggestions :-)

Best Wishes,
-Aayush

*most* Pocket PCs have no hardware support for USB Host, so you can't use a
reader across the board with any device. For the very few that do support
USB Hosting, you either need to write a driver for it, use one provided by
the OEM, or if the reader uses a standard driver like maybe USB Mass
Storage, then it may work out of the box.

Hi Chris,
Thankx for yr reply....wanted to clear some more of my doubts. I found some
articles on MSDN that talk about the features supported in Windows CE.Net 4.2
related to Smart Cards and Smart Card Readers [1].
Can you suggest on what type of decives can I leverage such features of
CE.Net to build applications for smart cards.

I can tell you that there is a company that makes a sleve for the iPaq
http://www.tactel.se/solutions_hw.php

I'm currently researching the fact that, despite the documentation, the
smart card files don't seem to be part of PocketPC. Somehow, the
distinction between CE and PPC isn't clear <g>.

Let me try to clarify. The windows CE smartcard resource manager (SCRM) did not
ship in box with PPC 2003. When a PPC vendor sells you a smartcard sleeve they
often provide a SCRM. This SCRM may be the Windows CE one, or it maybe one
of their own creation.

This annoyance should dissappear in a future release of PPC.

Thanks, I just found that one as well! It appears to be the exact same
device as teh Tactel sleeve I purhased, but Tactel has not provided any
documentation or support, so the sleeve has been useless! Perhaps
Axcess-Mobile will be a better experience...

By any chance if you get to know more about the Axcess-Mobile equipment or
work on it, kindly let me know about it. (aayushpuri [@] gmail.com). I soon
need to decide which one to buy for my project :-)

Thanks,

I am also looking for the solutions to this problem. Since PPC 2003 does not
include SCRM, is it possible to install the windows CE OS directly to the PPC
(like iPAQ)?

I wish I knew. I just got "the drivers" from Tactel tech support which
consisted of two .lib and one .h file for use with embedded vc. I also got
a login to the tech support web site which had a discussion forum with about
ten messages in it, 6 of which were duplicates of the same message and most
of which are several years old. It also had a link to a sample evc
application which doesn't seem to be there anymore and a broken link to
e-mail tech support. What a nightnmare.

Smart card support in PPC might just not be available right now... WinCE
may be the only viable option.
