From a development standpoint is there any real difference between a device
running Pocket PC and Pocket PC Phone Edition (other than the obvious cell
phone capability)?

Also, more of a market question. Is Pocket PC Phone Edition going to
eventually replace the WinCE Smartphone system?

I'm looking at branching some of my products out from the Pocket PC platform
to other WinCE platforms and I just want to know if its even worth it to
start working with Smartphones.

Thanks in advance,
ed

Ed,

I'll tackle the marketing question first - we will continue to see both PPC
Phones and Smartphones although they may begin to converge over time. Some
people prefer a device that is a phone first and PDA second (Smartphone) and
others prefer the reverse. My own office is split about 50/50. So if you
want to branch out into Smartphones, that might be a good move. You'll need
to redesign your user interface for the Smartphone, but the business logic
can probably be shared.

As for developing for PPC Phone Edition, unless you want to do something
phone-specific, it's really the same as developing for PPC. And if you do
want to do something phone-specific on either platform, be sure to check out
www.opennetcf.org for code.
