Hi,

is it possible to do native C/C++ Development for
CE 4.2 Devices (x86 and ARM)
with Visual Studio 2005???

Or do I need to Use the Old eMB VC++ 4.0?

Hi,

thanks for your reply,
but why exists then a converter to convert eMB VC++ 4.0 Projects to VS 2005?

Greetings
Frank

For those doing CE 5.0 development.

I think yes. The default targets are Pocket PC 2003 second edition and
Smartphone 2003 second edition. Separate SDKS have to be downloaded in
order to target Windows Mobile 5.

I think no. That's only needed in order to reduce the number of bugs in the
development environment. Unfortunately the frequency of the hang and
"switch to" bug in eVC4 makes it equally painful as the crashes and other
bugs of VS2005.

He said CE 4.2, not Windows Mobile 5.0. Big difference. Studio '05 cannot
debug native apps on CE 4.2. In fact even managed apps are not officially
supported for debugging on 4.2 devices from '05 either - they will work if
you manually deploy CF 2.0 SP1, but since it's not supported, that's not
guaranteed to continue working with any future updates to either the CF or
Studio.

I know. That's why I said this:

That means that, whether or not he downloads separate SDKs to target Windows
Mobile 5, Visual Studio 2005's built-in targets are still Pocket PC 2003
second edition and Smartphone 2003 second edition.

OK, that is important, and I must admit to not having noticed that.

So the default targets that are built-in in VS2005 were really just
vapourware from the start?

No. PPC is, for whatever reason I'll never understand, a "special case"
that Microsoft treats separately from "generic" CE. Generice CE 4.2 devices
are not supported, but PPC 03 (which is based on CE 4.2) is. The story was
similar in Studio '03, where generic CE 3.0 was not supported, but PPC 2000
(based on 3.0 ) was. Go figure.
